  • It's a Metroid/Castlevania style... underwater.

You gotta love it, like Braid and many others indipendent games, that, in fact, overclass many so called "modern games".

  • It looks like a ripoff from ecco the dolphin, mixed with some maginc from FF

  • This reminds me metroid underwater. It's a nice concept. I would like to see the same concept with battle ships and mechs with the same game play format.

  • The first levels of Aquaria are great, then it gets mediocre. It becomes more of an open world with constant dead ends. It would have been a great game if more thought had been put into level design and especially the character itself. There is no customisation and the forms you get are very uneven in power - Nature Form does little to nothing while Beast Form is immense. To have an ok experience with the game, it is recommended to be on google the whole time. Wouldn't pay £7 for it.

  • @merkantillian Sounds like you don't appreciate a challenge. There are only "dead ends" if you're going to a place that you shouldn't be going yet, and I for one think the developers made it pretty clear (generally) where to proceed. The forms are for versatility in gameplay, not to be "balanced" and to keeps you on your toes during the boss fights. There's plenty of variety in level design and a plethora of enemies. Not all good games need customization. :P

  • You know, I keep thinking! How can 1 game made by 3 people, mostly by 1 in fact be so amazing and immersive, while there are ton of millionaires titles produced by thousands of people lasting years to release, and when it does nothing but bore. Boring games, same of the same, and most of them are full of glitches and almost always doesn't delivery half of the experience as this game does!

  • the music reminds me of Requiem for a Dream

  • The soundtrack is pretty awesome

  • Nice to see the game has action.

I bought the bundle and tried this game for like 10 minutes, I got the impression it was boring and had no action, but this trailer clearly shows there are enemies and such later on.

This looks good, I'll play more later.

  • @LaughingUltros There are enemies and action already 10mins into the game :p This game has action and ambience combined - I like Action games and I also love Ambience games, but this have both :D

  • This game alone is well worth the price of the Humble Introversion Bundle, even though the other games aren't anything to write home about. Stellar piece of work, can hardly believe two guys put this together in just two years. I am spellbound.

  • @LDXlator Aren't anything to write home about....

AREN'T ANYTHING TO WRITE HOME ABOUT?!?!?!

You either clearly underestimate the Introversion games, or you were born in the wrong timeframe to enjoy them, they're built on nostalgia.

    I agree on Aquaria though.

  • @jherazob It's called an opinion. Judging by your immaturity, it's safe to assume that you weren't born in the "correct timeframe" either. Grow the fuck up.

  • Just got it in the Humble Indie Bundle :P Why have I never heard of this before hand!? Btw I don't want to sound like an annoying advertiser but you can get this and like 3 more games for really cheap with the humble indie bundle...

  • This game is a MASTERPIECE. Period. If you don' have it, just buy the Humble Bundle (12 days remaining) and experience one of the best things in your life :P

  • this game is soooooooo epic

    its in sum bundle now

    :P

  • Not sure why this seems to remind me a little bit of Metroid Fusion. Makes me tempted to buy it.

  • I didnt know samus aran became a mermaid

But then again, she sort of forgot the baby

  • Just finished my first playthrough on the iPad. It's so good!! I can't believe a two-people team did this. And wow, I didn't know how to get rid of the leeches the whole time...should've watched this sooner. I always just zoned out and back in to get rid of them lol.

  • It's like castlevania, in that it ends with -ia

  • where can i get the sun form?:( pls help guys

  • Looks like echo the dolphins but with a sea monkey

  • Do you just dive all day in this game and beat enemies on the way or what?

If that's the only things you can do, sounds kinda boring doesn't it?

  • @Flevalt It's a well-made, enchanting exploration of a beautiful, imaginative world. Easily accessible and thoroughly enjoyable, atmospheric and gorgeous, it's an amazing mash-up of a classic NES adventure and that fish-tank screensaver you had in the '90's.

  • 1:59 eater of worlds??

  • where can i get this game please

  • Best game ever :D I hope there will be a continuation :)

  • I love this game! But I can't play it anymore because it was on our old computer that we got rid of :((

  • you have 12 more hours to buy this game on steam for 5 DOLLARS!!!!

  • GAY

  • @arthur187 go back to your COD you piece of shit.

  • @MasacruRo U MAD? U JELLY OF MY COD GRAEEX??

  • @arthur187 Acting all 4chanis not to feel owned, kid get out.

  • It looks like Ecco The Dolphin on steroids. Not a bad thing to look like.

  • this game is epic epic epic epic epiC epIC ePIC... EPIC!!!!!!!!!!

  • That song... that fucking song!!!!!!!!!!!! it gives me chills!

  • hey! I spend so much time doing the songs with the mouse...in the video it is so fast!if I had a key for each color or if there is a key shortcut for the transformations!? how do the guy in the video makes it? can anyone tell me please? this game is really incredible...

  • @goncalocgaspar

A gamepad makes it easier, but I think he's just good with the mouse.

But if you don't mind feeling like a cheater, you can instantly use any of the songs just by pressing the right number key (1 for shield, 2 for energy, ...)

  • Looks like an underwater version of Castle Vania

  • I cryed so hard when I finished this game, but I don't know why T_T It was so beautiful u.u

  • this is the most beautiful game i ever played

  • @raffa0001 Try Trine.

  • Aztaka (PC) is another good game to play from Indie game developer!

The game has been inspired by the classic Castlevania and Metroid and take place in an Aztec universe.

  • FISH PEOPLES, YOG CTHULLHU

    OLD ONES AWAKE!

  • one of the best like legend of zelda in snes

  • One of the best games i played.

  • I got this game after I had a dream about swimming in underwater caverns. The next day, I was on Steam and found out about this game. I got the game instantly, and I regret nothing.

  • got it from the humble indie bundle a while ago

  • There are no words for how amazingly, fantastically, inconceivably suberb this masterpiece of a game is!

  • I immediately fell in love with this game, I lost sleep over it, and when I finally had to part it took a little bit of my heart. This game will always stick with me for the rest of my life.

  • @PrplPplEatr apparently I'm gonna buy this game now

  • I thought the Ecco thing too, that it would be some experiment in pacifist gameplay and attempt to appeal to a female demographic, with pretty underwater animals and a female protagonist and singing and cooking.

Then she puts on a goth outfit and starts shooting defenseless fish using fire from her hands and you go 'Oh, wait, nope this aint ecco'. Oh and later on, she turns into a monster that basically eats everything (especially defenseless fish).

  • @Saktoth Uh, "Under the sea" ain't "The little Mermaid". I loved how Aquaria was dark as it was beautiful.

  • combat is little boring, but on the overall, one of best indie game.

  • This game has one of the best soundtracks in my opinion

  • This is an indie gaming masterpiece.

  • She's fighting the diaria in the cow's 4th stomach

  • She's fighting the diaria in the cow's 4th stomach

  • Looks like "Ecco the dolphin"

  • This is an exquisite game. Not easy, but if you like a good challenge and an immersive atmosphere, it's definitely worth buying.

  • I just finished the game. TOTALLY AWESOME!

  • Could they not make a box edition?

    I can't download the full version due to i don't have a verfied paypal account, as i don't have a &%€# creditcard!

  • @Bikutolu You can pay for the game in other ways, it doesn't have to be a credit card.

  • How?

It's either criditcard, or a verified paypal account, and to verifie a paypal account you need to write in the information on your card to paypal.

  • Looks good but... Super Metroid anyone?

  • this is a great game, defenatly worth getting i think. still probably my fav.

  • Omg wtf o.0

  • как игра?

  • not sure about game itself but the soundtrack sounds great

  • The game is very nice too ! :)

  • Awesome!!!

  • Does this remind anyone else of Echo? It seems so much like it just with more. I can't wait to try it.

  • Actually No, but i see how It reminds you. both are great games....Well haven't played this yet, But it looks great.

  • you honestly don't see ecco? the whole "flying" and wave jumping?

  • i was thinking of.... This old SNES game. Forget the name ATM, and yeah It does remind me of it now :P

  • yep....it sure feels like Ecco the dolphin :P

  • where can i get this game?

  • you can get this game on steampowered(dot)com

  • This game is soooo damn awesome!! =D

  • Bought this this morning, it's <3. The art style and music give me goosebumps!

  • This looks grerat.

Hahah. This game does make me want to play Ecco the Dolphin again... actually, I still have to finish the Dreamcast one.

  • Reminds me of the underwater levels in donkey kong....

  • So.......Ecco meets Metroid?

  • looks like metroid underwater...

  • No, it looks like a DS Castlevania-underwater game^^ -Okay, that's pretty close anyway:P

    Anyway, this game BELONGS on the DS..-_-;

  • yah this game would be perfect on the ds

the fluid motions would be really cool to do with the stylus

  • Music is great, game is great, it must have been a big load of work drawing everything. I buy it. You truly have earned my cash ;)

  • Well if you like classics, Echo the Dolphin. But this game is new, innovative, original, and has a immersive story. The world is pretty big to. I have been playing for a few weeks on and off, and its a lot of fun. And hte world art and design are colorful & amazing.

  • Its nice having a widescreen display too. I can imagine the more square screens may feel more compact, if not any bigger than 15"

  • this game could NOT replace ecco the dolphin.. aquaria? wasnt there an rpg already out called illusion of aquaria?

  • Wonderful game! Awesome music, bought it through Steam, it's awesome!

  • I've just been playing this for the past 6 hours!!! I love it ^^ I loved Ecco the Dolphin too, and the games aren't really similar, apart from it's set underwater and it's a 2D swimming game. Apart fromt hat, they are two very different games. I love both games for different reasons.

  • This game reminds me of Metroid and Ecco thats basically what this is...Think about it

  • Yup, looks a bit like Ecco. Except better, because you're not a goddamn dolphin anymore and you can kill shit with missiles.

    Downloading the demo now.

  • Holy crap, music is amazing.

  • So any game that takes place underwater, even if it doesn't involve dolphins or Ecco (yeah, its spelt 'Ecco', not 'Echo'), has completely different story and gameplay, and is made by designers who have never played through Ecco the Dolphin is a rip-off of Ecco the Dolphin?

  • No, she sings, which is a an idea from the myths about sirens and mermaids in general.

She also transforms into other forms and kills stuff, creates items by combining ingredients, rides turtles, fights giant bosses, makes out with a dude... and lots of other things that dolphins don't generally do.

The only real similarity you can draw (AFAIK, not having played Ecco the Dolphin) is that the game is 2D, underwater and there are some crystals around.

  • @BitBlot

this is more like an underwater metroid. Although the gameplay is unique in it's own sense. I can see a metroid influence on this (those jellyfish look suspicious)

  • @Vladdyboy That's probably because metroid took inspiration from the real world... IE: Jellyfish

  • fuck off.

so crysis is a rip off of all the other FPSs

-.- this game seems amazing. i'm buying it :)

  • One thing It looks like that seperates this game from other IGF winners is that this looks like it actualy has some good ol player character connection.

  • I played this game last night. Honestly I haven't much expectations on this, but I was lucky to be wrong.

I was very impressed for the results of this project, the fact that an independent company could achieve this level of game is amazing.

There are several factors that make this game really attractive.

The Graphics are exquisite, refined and blended so delightful that the undersea environment created for the player is absolutely outstanding.

    (...)

  • (...)

I haven't realized till I played this game how much I missed and need a side-scrolling 2D game. That mixed with today's technology create an whole new experience.

The gameplay and UI is incredible, from the singing feature to the character control. It feels really natural and pleasant to play. Also the presented features and commands are so simple, intuitive and functional that the gameplay itself is a pleasure.

    (...)

  • (...)

An strong point among with the graphics are the dialogs, which have a great narrative level and attracts the player depth in the story.

It's an overall great game. Don't get fooled by screenshots or prejudge it because of the main character, it's a good good game.

And also an alternative to the big companies which most of them just change the year, add a couple thousand polygons more to the previous title and deliver nothing new or exciting.

At least give this a try.

  • But the game is maybe a bit too big with no lead. I could go anywhere, without any knowledge of what is going on.

  • From now on, i will keep track of you guys. You make magic!

  • It is a wonderful game, I really liked it, even though I never even finished it :-)

  • It`s my favorite game!!!Looooove it

  • What a stupid thing to say about a game you have never played!

  • It is a big game

  • Just finishing this left me pondering.. it's funny how a small project like this (small compared to most big company games) showed me as much value in story, graphics and gameplay as few recent big company games that I enjoyed.

Why waste millions of dollars to get full 3D environment that's clearly flawed when you look at it for more than 12 hours, when you can get this kind of great graphical atmosphere with just two guys working on it for 2 years.

  • I agree.

  • The graphics are fantastic for an indie game, but man I wish there were a full blown commercial game done like this. Could you imagine this with the graphics of something like Valkyrie Profile Silmeria? That would be breathtaking...

  • To be honest, I think that a full studio doing a 2d style game like this couldn't really do much better than Bitblot did. I just finished it and I really have to say that it is incredibly well polished and that some screenshots that don't show the vast diversity of the environment actually piss me off because it looks like a stupid flash fish tank game, and not something epic that takes 20hours to fully explore.

  • The game is pure awesome. Decent graphics (it doesn't need better), interesting plot, gameplay, music it has it all.

  • looks pretty simplistic but interesting...

  • Alex:Looks good. Very interesting concept of old school 2D with innovations of modern day systems.

  • The game is an innovation to games to discover new things in the sea and oceans that we never knew. Cause we know more about space than our own mother ocean...

  • this is no snes game. if you are alive when the snes came out u know that the graphic in this game will blow up the snes. this is a window game made by some people. i saw this game somewhere not long ago and this game won some award or something.

  • It seems to me that this game is the very definition of excellent art direction. Looks beautiful!

  • ...lolwut

  • agreed, this looks like a snes game.

  • yea definitely they made some fantastic advances in digital graphics interfaces and engine efficiency around 1994

  • That's clever, haha. Not a big fan of the 2D Ecco/Metroidvania style, eh?

  • not since i was goddam 4

  • This game looks really good and according to the trail has a really good sound and atmosphere as well. I will probably download the demo (if i can find one) and eventually purchase it, thanks to paypal :)

  • I dunno...

    Samus is kind of girl-y

  • This game is for anyone, macho boy.

  • LOL. The craziest comment of the week award goes too...you.

  • and for THE BI and STRAIGHT

    THE OLD and THE YOUNG

    ...

    ä Iä Cthulhu F'tagn!

  • Is that voice Sophie from Howl's Moving Castle?

  • Looks like fun

  • Awesome! I'm really loving "water" games lately and of course I loved this one the most. I'm looking forward to it.

  • You know the games gonna be kickass when theres a murmaid with a British accent!

  • Wow! I've only known about this game for a day and now I'm just as excited for it's release as I am about Starcraft 2's release. I hope they port this to the Nintendo DS like they're doing with Maplestory!

  • ill buy it if there is a linux version.

  • wine should work fine with it, from what I've heard.

  • @Darmst Grab the linux version from the Humble Indie Buindle

  • I hope they release the soundtrack, because damn that is awesome.

  • she needs a more natural kicking motion.

  • Yeah, but at least the levels look good. In an modern MegaDrive Ecco sort of way, lol... Which isn't necessarily a bad thing; does everything have to be 3D?

  • she needs more natural motion all together - the rag-doll physics are terrible. she doesn't look like a living thing - she looks like a paper doll with hinges being dragged around by a string. seeing as though she is the main focus of the game - they should have spent a little more time with her sprite trying to make it at least a little more convincing. the rest of the levels look gorgeous, but seeing her unnatural movement is jarring.

  • skeletal animation != rag doll physics :)

But yeah, there's a lot of detail in her animation now and it has been updated a lot since this trailer was made (February) due to feedback. We haven't had any complaints from people who have played the game.

    But to each their own.

  • If its available to buy ill buy it.

The good thing about this game is, that it is different from "modern Games", which are mostly grafic demos with a very bad gameplay.

  • then....you sold try other indy games like Gish, gumboy adventures, Armadillo Run and a lot more.....just google for indy games and you will find more than enough...a lot of them are free....

  • cool, even if you don't like the game you can use it as a screensaver =]

  • Will it be on Steam?

  • Metroid meet Ecco the Dolphin hellz yes.....

  • Its like Odin Sphere!

  • I used to work for Atlus. I dunno if it's anything like Odin Sphere but if ya wanna know about the game, drop me a line. :p

  • Wow! Amazing! The best-looking and sounding indie game since Cave Story.

Reminds me of Super Metroid and Shadow of the Beast. The music is just wonderful (again, reminds me of some aquatic rendition of the Journey theme from Shadow of the Beast)

Is this coming to Live Arcade? If so, I'll buy it the day it comes out.

  • Graphics remind me of 8-bit and 16-bit gaming. Music reminds me of Nightwish for some reason. Looks awesome! :)

  • Looks incredibly good!

  • Very nice music and very nice grafics. Iam really excited!

I will look forward this game!

    Congratulations from me too!

  • Derek and Alec are two awesome guys and I'm glad that you guys won the grand prize. I loved hanging out with you at gdc and it was great having lunch with you guys as well

  • this reminds me of the silver age of gaming. definately something i'd buy. the music/art is amazing. underwater never looks so beautiful! It says something that when i saw the character leap from the sea, i felt something.

  • Uff, awesome game! O_O

  • Uhh... A game I will look for O.O

  • wow. great

  • i think i might look for this game, which is odd for before because the last pc game i bought was warcraft 2

  • Castlevania meets Ecco the dolphin - the production value looks amazing, both of the trailer and the gameplay itself! Congratulations on making IGF finals.

  • why does it look like ecco the dolphin?
