I wonder why there isn't a Gymnopedie No. 2 from Debussy. According to him, it's impossible to render in orchestra. And yet... Eminence Symphony Orchestra was able to do it x)
This song is my favourite of all three Gymnopédies, and every time I hear it, I think I might almost cry. Don't know why. I just find the song sadder than any other piece I've ever heard. Debussy and this orchestra have done a beautiful job with this rendition. Thankyou for uploading it.
This has to be one of the most beautiful peices of music I have ever heard- It is just so sad and romanitic, deserves to be listened to in silence so it is all you can hear. Love it.
@pandasandbunnies "…Debussy orchestrated the 3rd and the 1st only, reversing the numbering: First gymnopédie (original piano setting by Satie) → 3rd gymnopédie (orchestration by Debussy) Third gymnopédie (original piano setting by Satie) → 1st gymnopédie (orchestration by Debussy)" —From the notes.
If you could feel as I do then you would know that I somehow bear the Worlds pain when I listen to this moving emotional music. I feel the sorrow of the whole planet, I feel the serenity of peace. I feel the capricious love of the whole Earth. But mostly I feel the loss of my child Elliott. I love you my boy, oh! how I miss you. I will always love you. Satie's sad and yearning music is the mirror of my heart and soul. Son, hear my soul, listen and feel a heart broken. Your Daddy. Paul. x

Well, it was originally Gymnopedies I, but when Debussy wrote the orchestra score, he reversed the Gymnopedies I and III. So, the "orchestral" Gymnopedies I is the "piano" Gymnopedies III, and vice versa. :)
Anyone know what orchestra did this version, and/or what album it can be found on? I have the Symphonique de Montreal version and it's just not quite the same magic.
This is the London Promenade Orchestra's version conducted by Eric Hammerstein. To me it remains the best performed ever I can't find it on CD or vinyl but you can find both of the two Gymnopédies orchestrated by Charles Gerhardt & the National Philharmonic Orchestra (Gymnopédie n°.3) and the London Promenade Orchestra's one on iTunes(well, still bloody mp3s...).
The album name is Classical Dreams: The French Impressionists. You can find nice versions of Ravel, Debussy, Fauré etc in it.
@FuckTheJanitors Thanks so much for all of the info. I went to Amazon, and downloaded the MP3, but it seems to be slightly different, and doesn't seem to have the depth that Distant Mirrors YouTube has. Do you perchance have the label name and call number? Again, thank you!
mmm satie... my favorite.. he was obsessed with parasols and velvet coats... he was considered a pretty bad pianist and didnt even use it to compose... thank goodness ravel found him or he would probably not be known today.
Ohhhhh haha- I love this song but I'd been wondering why it sounded nothing like Satie's first Gymnopedie (until I read the description- so thanks, DistantMirrors!). I'd been thinking, Oh wow, Debussy REALLY took artistic license with the orchestration!
This morning when I woke up, we had a red sunrise - there were so many clouds in the sky, and they were orange, red, purple, dark gray, and at the horizon it was bright, turquoise green. The wind was dancing, and it just felt so mysteriously beautiful, it was a strange feeling I cannot explain. This suits it perfectly. Merci, ce est tres beau.
This is NOT number 1. Its number 3. This is hauntingly brilliant through.

This is Gymnopedie "No.1" for the orchestration. Nothing is wrong.
The numbering was deliberately reversed by Debussy who orchestrate Satie's Gymnopedies.

You might want to fix the title. This particular piece is Gymnopedie #3, not #1

the second chord of the 1st gymnopedie (3rd for debussy) is not a b-minor but a D major 7th

the proper term for dog-headed person has inspired me to come up with the album name "Cynocephalic Frenzy."
weinerbongo 2 years ago
The image is a depiction of the life of the mythical 'dog-headed people' of the late middle-ages.
An important bishop reported the existence of these 'dog-heads' and the medieval church had to decide if the 'dog-heads' had a soul.
The church liked bogey-men tales like this as it kept the peasants tilling the fields of the monasteries.
