I thought the boomerang was almost useless too, then I got 15 hellstone bars and made the Flamerang. That weapon singlehandedly took me through "The Eye of Clthutu" and "The Eater of Worlds" with extreme ease. Skeletron still took a bit of effort, but it was still kinda easy :P
