"I don't consider optics for a shotgun in this kind of role. Generally home defense"
True but if you have the all purpose 28" barrel as well I can swap the 20" barrel in under 20 seconds and now I you can throw optics on it for field or slug long range. At least thats how it works on my moss 500.
200-300 dollar difference... the 870(with full length mag) at cabelas and impact is $399, and the 590a1 is $389 or $420..... WHERE DO YOU BUY YOUR GUNS BRO?? YOU JUST GOT SCREWED
@brutedude1 Look at the Remington Marine Magnum and the Mossberg Mariner, same shotgun and over $200 apart. The Mossberg is just over $400 and the Remington is over $600.
@bhs0 When equally configured the Rem will be more. The Mossberg Mariner averages $150-$200 less than the Rem 870 Marine Mag, essentially the same shotgun. The basic Mossberg 500 field shotgun averages $30-$50 less than the equivalent Rem 870 Express.
@BAGboy0032 With a stock 870, no. There are a million was to fasten picatinny stubs to the mag tubes on shotguns and I'm sure someone makes a bayonet that attaches to a picatinny or bolt on lug.
@545Krinkify The tang safety is the best location for shotguns, especially hunting birds. So much quicker, and in a naturally easier position to engage/ disengage. Pistol grips eliminate the tang safety access and sort of defeat the purpose. That's why I'll never put a pistol grip on my 590. Both are top of class shotguns. Most Police/SWAT units use the 870 and the Military uses the 590.
remingtons arent drilled and tapped for a rail/ optics, there is no bayonete lug, there is no need for a tube extension on the mossy cuz theyre built to hold a lot. fail in that category. mossy wins
@garrettzkool63 Everyone is entitled to their opinion. 1, this specific Rem model has the tube ext but the police model is hi-cap with a full length tube. 2, I don't hold a bayonet lug as the make or break deal on a shotgun and 3. there are tons of Rem accessories including ways to mount optics. At the End of the day both shotguns are solid, reliable firearms.
I THINK its Remington or BUST, everything else is CHEAP SCRAPS, designed and STAMPED from metal SHEETS made with PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE !!! yeap, defiantly kill you first you when your mossburg jams
I never spend over $600 on a shot gun anymore because these two american made guns are so great! I use an 870s for hunting and a Mossberg 590 for tactical/hd
I have the mossberg 590 for my hd/tactical shotgun but I have 3 870s for hunting I love them both, both are great shotguns, both can do anything you could ever want and need and both are made in the greatest country in the world U.S.A they both have trade offs of eachother that make them equal out in the end
Hey "308"... One thing you failed to mention (and I'm not trying to critique you.. you did a great job on this vid) is the fact that the Mossberg has the capability of putting optics on top of the receiver right out of the box without any gun smithing involved as opposed to the 870, which should be another "+" in Mossberg's favor. It's not a big deal.... just an observation worth considering. Any thoughts on the Saiga 12 by the way? Been thinking about getting that or an 870 Police.
@Sennanchie I don't consider optics for a shotgun in this kind of role. Generally home defense, CQC, etc where optics aren't that big an issue. A rifle of course would be a different situation. As for the Saiga it is a great shotgun to own but if I could only have one, I'd take an 870. Pump shotguns are always going to be more reliable than autos. Saigas are fun but the steadfast reliability of an 870 or 590 would make a better choice for either defense, or a 1st shotgun IMO.
@the308capital Rem didnt qualify with two pin/PLASTIC trigger group, no ambi safety, dual extractr, anti jam elevator.Remington dropped out as they didn't consider it a lucrative contract and now Moss is banking off rep of being the ONLY shotgun to pass the testing AND conform to the requirements. Look at thickness between Moss alum receiver (THICKR) and Rem (thinr) steel receiver, similar strength, diff materials. Its easier to warp alum rec vs steel, but I've seen more probs w/Rem than Moss!
@the308capital i see where you are going and thats true however the extractor isnt like a extra swinging moving part to get in the way, you know with 2 that the shell is going to come out...and if you broke one??? im shure it would still work.... the remmy not so much...im not bustin your balls i like the 870 but prefer the mossy
@BigJ782011 The barrel is still steel and needs to be treated from time to time to mitigate rust issues. I still prefer the extra rigidity of the steel 870 receiver over the aluminum 590, but it isn't a deal breaker for the 590.
@pura0123vida1 Thanks for watching. No firearm system is, or will ever be "perfect". Weight, cost, material, reliability, ergos, function, etc will always a balancing act. I try to point out the true strengths of each gun while spotlighting the shortcomings, it's the only real way to be fair and honest.
Just traded my saiga .410 for a remington 870. I am very happy with the 12ga. Saiga 12 are too damn expensive right now, would love to have one though.
@tyte90 870s are outstanding pump guns. Sorry about your Saiga, though personally I have no use for .410 bore shotguns. Saigas are getting pricey, I bought mine for just over $500 a few years ago because there is looming talk of an import ban. It might be total BS, but I wouldn't totally rule out the possibility.
Mine was probably a rare dud, but I remember the 870 I got you could barely pump the action and I remember it would rust easily. I don't have any experince with the Mossberg, but they're fine shotguns from what I heard.
@esh325 Either one will make a great shotgun but both makes it even better. 870s by far are the most produced shotgun in the world ,10 million and counting.
@esh325 The Marine Magnum 870 is my favorite. It has an 18.5inch barrel, 6+1 capacity and is nickel plated for awesome corrosion resistance. It is expensive though. Mossberg also makes a nickel plated Marine version of the 590 that's like $200 cheaper.
@esh325 I don't care for tube fed autoloaders but I do like my Saiga 12. Overall, pumps are the way to go for reliability. The only gun that's not kept in my safe is my Marine Mag 870 which is my home defender. Pumps by their design are always going to be more reliable. The Saiga is more of a fun gun but I would always take a pump over an auto in a tough situation.
@esh325 It's damn good but I've had a few hiccups. First, lighter loads won't cycle right. I a tough situation if you have to use whatever you can get your hands on, a pump will cycle weak loads whereas an auto might hang up. Overall with high power shells, Saigas are great. The other thing with the Saiga is you have to clean the piston and gas chamber with a fair amount of regularity, especially if firing dirtier shells.
@esh325 Yes, it has 2 settings but even on the higher setting sometimes with weaker loads a failure to eject will occur, it's rare but has happened to me a couple of times.
@1113stve I think Atlantic firaerms said they think they are going to bann them because they don't qualify as sporting use, but it's not certain yet. It's really a shame I wanted one. Oh well.
In your case you can swap your 20" barrel for the 28" . In my case I would swap out my 18" barrel for the 28" if I need or have to.
