Awesome!!! Just started playing, and this actually helps a great deal! You're a wonderfull teacher, and the way you're repeating the thinkgs make it really settle in before moving on ^_^ *thombs up*
I spent 1 term when I was 5 learing the recorder. Then last month 40 years later I found my old recorder. and thought, its time to learn to play! I have bought myself a tenor recorder which I love. I can't read music, so the only way I can play a tune is to download people playing and copying their playing but this is very slow. Is there anywhere (web sites) that has songs, which show the finger positions?
Any help would be greatly appreciated paulenville@aol.com
Wow, this is so confusing! In Belgium we don't use terms like: A B C D.. and whaterver there is. We just call our notes: do, re, mi, fa, sol, la , si... don't you guys use that at all?
@xXxNienkexXx It is interesting what other countries! We use solfege as a teaching tool but mostly for singing. Some places use movable do (where do is always the tonic note) and some use fixed do (where do is always middle C).
damn... I've played the recorder with the right hand on the top since I'm 6 years old and just rediscovered it. How can this affect me and my playing ( the fact that I'm still playing with the right hand on top !)
@RicaBert1995 The correct way is to use your left hand on the top. You can get away with RH on top until you start using both hands, and then it physically doesn't work because the pinky C hole is off to the right and only your right pinky can reach it!
thanks so much. I watched this like five times and drew 7 holes 7 times for all the notes and filled them in for each note. thanks alot i really aprecciate it.
Nice video :)) I bought my recorder a couple day ago, and want to play it.. By the way I play guitar, so want to expand my horisonts.. First song I want to learn to play on recorder is My heart will go on :))
Thanks for taking the time! I'm nearly 60, and we used these things in elementary school. However, they were called "flutes"; I never even heard the term "recorder." Black plastic with raised finger holes, cost was perhaps 50-cents. The class would blow in unison.
Also, we never learned letter notes... each finger position was identified by a number, and after all these years I can still play Tom Dooley and the Marine Corps Hymn by reciting those memorized numbers... 1-3-55555-8-5, etc.
Thank you.I was really helpfull.Istarted palying recorder today and i can play thhe star wars theme song and We shals overcome.Btw you are very good teacher.
Don't use a plastic recorder. They get too quickly condense water and are mostly unable to express an adequate tone. That's a kids toy, nothing others.
Hi....I'm in a Beatles cover band and I want to learn 2 songs.....The Fool on the Hill......and...You've Got to Hide YOur Love Away....are all recorders the same as far as key's...ie. you can purchase a harmonica in different keys......any suggestions would be appreciated.....as soon as pick one up...I'll use your tutorial which is very helpful.....THanks
@bushkini Love the Beatles. All Sopranos are roughly the same, and are in the key of C. I don't know much about alto, bass, and sopranino recorders, but I don know that if you finger a G on a soprano, it will come out as another pitch on the other ones. But you cannot buy an "F" or "Bb" recorder like you can harmonicas. If you want to learn those songs, I'd recommend either figuring them out by ear, or buying the sheet music and a fingering chart. Good luck!
I've played the recorder since I was a kid, learned by ear, I have become really good at it, but I have no clue when people talk about technical stuff like the note letters. I also grew up in Switzerland where it is accepted there as any other concert instruments, I was really surprized when I moved to the US how people think here it is just a kid's instrument. I've seen proffesionals play, this instrument is awesome!
ahmm music teacher,...thank you so much for your lesson,..i learn very much,.,..i have some question,...theres have a chord in recorder like Am to Gm???A#m to G#m???,...because im a guitar and drum player,...im begineer in recorder,..i wait for your reply,..thnx again,.. GodBless
Thanks for the teaching, your the best. I am one of the few teenage recorder players, im still novice but your lessons has helped me learn songs like star wars, its a shame how the recorder isn't given the credit it deserves.
I bought my recorder yesterday and love it! (I am somewhat ashamed to admit that I am 21 considering the common conception that this is a kids instrument).
I have finally mastered the low notes but I am a bit concerned about how I am supposed to tackle the really high notes that require you to only put your thum on the back half way.
Thats great! The low ones are hard because they squeak if one of the holes isn't totally covered. You can play lots of songs with just the first octave so even if you can't play the really high notes yet. Also, recorder is not a kid's instrument! Do a youtube search and check out all the awesome professional recorder players out there!
I usually stick with the low ones, but the half hole isn't impossible. It just takes a bit of practice. It is tricky, because your thumb can't just stay in the same exact position for all the half holes, you kind of have to adjust. Good luck!
Don't practice in a cold, damp basement because your breath will rapidly condense inside the recorder and make all the lower notes difficult if not impossible to play. The condition seems to be worse with plastic recorders, as the wooden ones absorb some of the moisture.
ugh this so hard! lol i tried everything u told me i and every key is the leak lol and i play the alto sax i think that the prob i think i blowing to hard
i am right-handed and i use my right hand for top and left for bottom. its just more easy for me. so theres no need to stress over which one goes where just make it so you feel comfortable
Actually, you should use your left on top because that is how the instrument is designed. If you want to use your right hand, go ahead, but if you are just starting PLEASE FOR YOUR OWN SAKE use your left hand on top because you will run into problems later and have to switch anyways.
Actually it doesn't matter except the small holes for accidentals. Moeck sells a lefthanded recorder. Moeck is like the best known recorder maker. Also a "baroque" recorder? You mean an alto recorder. the one you have is a soprano which was extremely popular along with the rest of the recordr family all through the baroque. And get a wooden instrument. Or atleast a decent plastic. lol
A baroque recorder (verses a German one) refers to the fingering. You finger F as "T1231" in a German recorder, and "T12313p" on a Baroque recorder. I have never heard of Moeck, but I don't see what the point of having a left handed recorder is when it is just as easy to learn it the correct way. I suppose there are people who learned it the wrong way, and then got to a point where they couldn't progress because the design of a recorder prevents using your LH on the bottom.
Left-hand on top is a modern decision which makes mass-production more viable. If you look at paintings from the past, you'll see right-hand top players frequently. Given the stepping stone to other instruments role many users have for the recorder, it makes sense to keep the left-hand on top, but you do find some right-hand top advanced players even today.
no, it is more natural for right-handers to have their dominant hand below and the left hand on top. that's why all woodwind instruments (flute, clarinet, saxophone) designs benefit right-handers more.
Did I wink? To do a chromatic scale, you need to use half hole positions. This means you cover the hole half way. So to get F#, cover the 4th hole half way to make the pitch a half step higher. Its takes practice and the recorder will squeak, but anything worth doing takes time. Good luck!
Some of the cheep school recorders sound awful, so you have my sympathy! (Try listening to 20 of them at the same time) I have my kids use the Peripole Halo ones which sound MUCH better, and aren't as loud. Only about $6. Have your daughter master each step before moving on...
1. say the rhythm
2. name the notes
3. name the notes in rhythm
4. name the notes in rhythm while fingering the song
5. play the song.
By the time she gets to step 5, she will pretty much know the song!
If you are going to only play a few notes and never play another instrument, it doesn't make a difference. But I always feel sorry for the students who have to relearn the recorder half way through the year because they had their right hand on top before and now they can't play low C. Or the beginner clarinet, flute, or saxophone student who had no head start because they never had their left hand on the top before. I make my students play recorder correctly. I'm sorry your teacher does not.
I am not an alto recorder player. I know that when you finger B on both Alto and Soprano, they sound different. However, you should be able to play the same music by yourself. It will just sound weird when you play with others. Do a search for "alto recorder" and see if anything comes up. Good luck!
Hello, I was just given an Alto recorder (Treble) are the notes the same? B A G F E D C? Working from mouthpiece down? I've looked everywhere, but can't find out! Can I use saprano recorder music for my alto? Thank you! We just love you!!! M.
On a Baroque recorder the German 'F' fingering sounds pretty flat, I wouldn't recommend it personally. :) Same with all of the other German fingerings, they usually sound out of pitch on Baroque recorders. :)
Sorry! Just lesson one as of today. There are a bunch of other lessons on specific songs. I'd do Ode to Joy as lesson two. I'll try to put up more easy songs.
I started teaching myself how to play the recorder and it squeaks every time! Well until I quit blowing so hard. What recorder are you playing? A soprano? Do soprano, tenor, bass, and alto recorders all get played the same as far as notes are concerned?
Yes, blowing too hard will make it squeak! :) The recorder will also squeak if one of the holes is not covered all the way. I'm pretty sure I'm playing a soprano. I think the other recorders are played the same way, but you may get different pitches. example: thumb and 2 fingers on top sounds A in a soprano, but sounds a different pitch on an alto. I am no expert on the differences though!
your video really help^^ I wanna ask, how is high E play ? I now it's hard to tell by typing, so you can type like 1234567 holes. for example low E is hole 1,2,3,4,5 and is high F 1,2,3 ,5,6 ? thx in advance
Why left hand on the top. Also there is a fool chramatic scale with low c to high high d. And i mean hi hi d you cover half seals and alot of them too
The recorder can play more than one octave, but since I only teach one octave to my 3rd graders, I've only included one in this video. As for "why left hand on the top," see other comments. :)
I have a 3 piece recorder too. The foot joint is adjustable because people have different sized hands. Also for cleaning. One and two piece recorders are made with the pinkie hole on the right. If I am remembering correctly, the holes are slightly different size. Some notes (C# for example) require you to cover the hole farthest to the right, which would be difficult to do with your left pinkie.
4. All woodwind instruments are played with L.H. on top. You can't fake it with the R.H. on top like you can on recorder.
5. It is more difficult to play the lower notes than it is to play the high notes. Since most people are R.H. dominant, it is good to have your right hand handling the hard part. For lefties, you are lucky that you get to begin learning with your dominant hand.
Most importantly, L.H. on top is the proper way to play. (see #1) Yes, some can make sounds with their toes, or their nose, but it isn't how the instrument was designed to be used!
Thanks cjwaywell for the question! It is a very common one, and one I have answered many times in the classroom! :)
Great video (halfway through watching it). Got a question for you, though - don't you think that German F sounds more like F# ?
I have a few recorder lessons up on my channel as well. Check them out when you get a break. Maybe we can all play as a recorder orchestra (play parts separately, merge video and audio) and become YouTube famous. LOL

Why do you have to have your left hand on the top? I have my right hand on the top and it doesn't make any difference.

Excellent question!
1. The recorder is designed to have your left hand on the top.
2. When you advance to playing all the notes, your right pinkie needs to reach the lowest notes which are slightly to the right.
3. If you advance, you will need to learn to play L.H. on top anyways. It is extremely difficult and discouraging to do.
I'm running out of room. Will continue in another strain :)

LOL

Ha! if you figure out how to do it, I'll play!
I think the F (fingered 3 on top 1 on the bottom) sounds like F# if you are using a baroque recorder.
I'll check out your page too!
