2 dislikes? Damn Yankees..... Live, eat, sleep, and breathe Orioles magic!! 98% of the votes into the Hall of Fame I believe... One of the greatest to play the game. Love Cal!!
Too many people cite Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa's chase of Maris' home run record as saving baseball after the strike of '94. I think the city of Baltimore, Orioles fans, and real baseball fans everywhere might disagree.
Look up 'Class act' in the baseball dictionary and you'll see Cal Ripken Jr in all capitals.
People can judge him all they want, but Cal's one of the best there is in the game. And he wasn't just a mediocre player. He was one of the best shortstops of the game, and probably will go down as one of the best of all time. He gave it his all every single game he played, and not a lot of people can say that. He may not have played to the level Lou Gehrig did in his time, but to break his longtime record of consecutive games played is an incredible achievement that should and will be revered.
I know little of the world of baseball, but I can deeply appreciate Mr Ripken's achievement. He did the impossible on many levels. It was physical, psychological but it was also inspirational. He is a great American, a great man. His grandchildren will wonder what all the fuss is about, though! God bless Cal, his fans and his family.
How can you say that about a guy? Don't judge. Playing over 3,000 games in a row is like going to work every day for 8 years straight. Cal's played with a broken leg. To say that he gave less than 100% every day is a joke.
wow wow wow. Most incredible sports moment of all time. and when the other team shows so much respect is why american sports are the greatest invention in history
For those of you saying that he played just to break a record....WRONG!
The numbers he put up at even 50% health were more than most people put up at 100% health in their whole career. 3100 hits, 430 home runs, 1600 RBIs, 97% fielding percentage, 19 All Star Games, 2 MVPs.....he is the GREATEST SHORT STOP EVER!!!
What a joke...here is this guy who avoids injuries so he can break a record....just think how good Cal Ripken Jr would have been if he had put forth 100% effort to play the game of baseball....instead of avoiding injuries and playing at 50%
Anybody will tell you that if you want to have longevity...you need to play soft
Hi. I am Cal Ripken. I destroyed the best team in baseball. I ruined their farm system. I was glad to see Earl Weaver go - because he knew I sucked. I got my dad a job as manager (but he sucked). I was paid top dollar to stink. My lifetime average is .261 and I threatened to be a homerun hitter, but couldn't. I have a streak that destroyed an organization. I hope nobody finds out that I did steroids.
if i find who disliked this imma do worse things to u than that geico lizard.... u hav no sense of how hard that is for some one hard to believe it started with him 0-20 somin in his first comple games .... but Earl's gotta be givin some credit without a doubt for this one
@08pinoy427 You are speaking another language. I don't understand what you typed. Cal Ripken is a pussy. He destroyed a great organization. I hope he rots in hell. (Die-hard O's fan)
@msm318 what are talking about, you can say he may have been a bit selfish, he probably would have beneifited from a day off once in a while, but its a bit strong to call him a pussy, as far as destroying a great organization i have 2 words for you - peter angelos! most of the blame goes to your clueless owner
@skuterball Agreed; people give baseball so much grief nowadays but really is a fantastic sport to watch, always provides some of the most inspirational moments. Definitely remember watching this, it was 15 years ago, hard to believe! :-O:-)
I still get tear in my eyes when I see this. It is a record that will not be broken during any of our life times. I am a Maryland native and a Cal Ripken fan throughout my life. Thanks to who ever put this on youtube because I have not seen this great sports moment in years. Ripken is a true class act and young baseball players should idolize someone like this.
This is without a doubt baseball's most memorable moment because it was a 22 minute ovation worth watching from start to finish. I've never seen a more heart wrenching moment about a baseball player connecting with the fans in such an intimate personal level. This was also about the "unbreakable" record set by one of the most beloved athletes of all time Lou Gehrig. Fans voted this MLB's most memorable moment...I couldn't agree more
@mbh0613 As a life-long O's fan....this guy is a piece of shit i wish never existed. His stupid streak is joke. He ruined the organization for 2 decades.
it's not the greatest moment in baseball ever. im not even sure it makes the top ten. but after the 94 strike nearly ended the sport? it was cal that saved baseball.
@tonydp05, yes it is. I lived about a half mile from the stadium in West Baltimore and I heard that crowd along with me watching it on tv. The greatest moment in Baseball history. I believe that no one now or anytime in the future will break Cal's 2632 streak with all these injuries happening.
This is wonderful. I'll never forget getting home from basketball practice just in time to see this game. An amazing moment for the game and for my favorite player.
