2:27-2:57 That riff is something unique as far as we're talking about inspiration and originality. I undoubtfuly believe that this sole riff played the most important role in what we perceive as "doom" ( in metal music). Ofc it steps on certain scales ( that "doomy" songs may be played in) and has characteristics of bitter music written before EDM be it metal or else but... The combination of the doom aura, epicness and power it hides within itself is something unique again.

I remember reading somewhere that Johan didn't want to stay on board, because he was kind of shy and didn't really feel comfortable touring all over the world in front of large numbers of people. Messiah was trying to get into the band while the band was still begging for Johan to stay. Candlemass, for a long time, didn't even want Messiah. He practically forced himself into the band by moving into the apartment next to door to Lief Edling.

To my knowledge, the band did all they could to make him stay, it was his choice to leave for his own reasons. However, Messiah is one of the best singers in metal, powerful doom metal voice, the best choice they could have made was Messiah Marcolin. Hail to Candlemass.

Actually is HIM that never wanted to be with the band. Or any band. He was a session vocalist for their first album, but refused to stay as much as they wanted him to. I think it had to do with his dislike of touring and all that comes with life on the tour bus! Too bad, he has a charismatic baritone voice...
