  • @radixautobody ~ Beginning around 1965, and running thru the very early 1970's, Ford's SOHC 427 hemi became a common site at major national NHRA events. I grew up in SoCal and, beginning in 1963, lived at Lions, Irwindale, OCIR, Fontana, Pomona (for the Big Go West, in February) and Famosa (Bakersfield) for the Smokers' Spring race. Kalitta, Tom Hoover and "Sneaky" Pete Robinson were players with the "cammer" in top fuel ~ Don Nicholson & Bob Tasca in funny car & George Montgomery in AA/GS.

  • I've been a Chevy man since I bought my first car in the summer of '64 ~ a 1957 Chevy Bel Air, but this is easily the coolest American built engine, ever. I was at the '67 Winternationals (Pomona, California) when Connie Kalitta won Top Fuel in his "Bounty Hunter" which was powered by a 427 single overhead cam, hemi Ford. The achilles heel of this motor was the 266 foot long timing chain, a problem solved when the late "Sneaky" Pete Robinson came up with a gear design to replace the chain.

  • @MrRonnieG Wow, wish I could of been there!
