According to the AKC - of the top 50 breeds - in intelligance - Huskies rank #49 - they are made for work - not learning tricks!!!!!! The test: 1) How many iterations to learn a trick? (sit, heel) 2) How many tricks can they learn? 3) How long to they retain the trick!!! Huskies: about 20 iterations!! MAYBE 4 or 5!! less than 1 month!!! Boarder Collie (#1) usually 2 or 3, +50 easily, forever!!!!
It will be two years I lost my sib. in Oct. He was like a son of mine. I never overcame his loss. He understood all we talked to him. The secret is to talk to the dog. Talk showing what you are talking about: food, action, toys, give name to everything and show them. They just get it. My dog had a huge vocabulary of comprehension. They are very inteligent and pretty much behave like a kid. Love this breed deeply. Miss my kid so very much. Brazil on line.
@silverghost93 I didn't train him. When I took this video, he was already getting old and had arthritis, so he wouldn't go far. I would not trust my younger Huskies off leash.
@silverghost93 Feed them something they LOVE from a potato chip bag - wrinkle the bag - let the dog hear the sound - so he associates the wrinkling sound with the food!!! When you want to call him - just wrinkle the bag!!!! Works everytime!!!! Mine escapes from a fenced in yard - but to call him back - I ALWAYS have potato chip bags in the garage - he comes like a shot!!!! I also say "Walkies" and he come quickly - because he leaned it is time for a walk on the leash - which he loves!!!
I'm planning on buying one very soon but am concerned because I live in Miami, FL and it gets really hot here. But this is by far my fav. dog, any suggestions on whether or not i should get one or not?
i have found the secret of letting my husky, sasha off her lead. i take her to the local municiple tennis courts of a night, all enclosed, she cant get out andd can run free. she loves it.
wow, if my sibe was off the lead she would be gone, got off the lead once, but lucky me and a friend wer on our bikes, still took about half a mile to catch her, whats your secret.
cbrboy76... If you find out the secret please let me know too! Our Siberian Husky, Sasha, is the same way. If she gets loose, she's off and running. I had to chase her down the other day. She'd lie down in the snow, let me get close to her, then she'd take off. Finally I played snowball catch with her. I threw them closer and closer to me until she was close enough for me to grab her collar.
What a beautiful dog! So sorry to hear he's crossed the Rainbow Bridge. A funny story about my retired racing greyhound and rabbits - one day while walking him a trio of baby bunnies darted out from a row of hedges. I grasped his leash tightly, because greys are sighthounds and are trained to chase, etc. Trai sort of glanced at the scampering rabbits, then calmly trotted to the curb and happily sniffed the flowers in a neighbor's small garden. No wonder they retired him at age two!
He was an amazing looking dog. It's just bad he had to be put down because of his failing health. If you liked this video, you should check out "Large Siberian Husky: Hungry Like a Wolf" It's another one of buddy.
I sure hope hes in an enclosed park.. if my husky saw a rabbit and the park wasnt enclosed I wouldnt see him for the rest of the day.. he'd be gone.. no recall in the world would get him to stop focusing on the rabbit and come back to me.
Amazing. He is just like Gunner, my siberian huskey/german shepard and God knows what else mix. Gunner is 12 years old, he is black, with a little brown and he is super wooly in the winter. He is a chowhound, he loves to chase small mammals, he loves to pull you around and he is super goofy. Buddy is a beautiful animal.
Buddy is so gorgeous! After seeing "Hunger like a wolf" that did it for me, I went out and finally got a Siberian Husky from a rescue. I hope my little guy grows up to be as big as he is. The vet said he's huge for a 9 week old puppy. I CAN'T WAIT!
he looks huge, I thought a male husky was 45 - 60 lbs, he looks way over that, and he doesnt look really overwieght or anything, just really really big. do some breeders breed a large size husky?
The "Breed Standard" is just a general idea. You have two types of Huskies, Fast-Pullers, & Freight-Pullers. The Fast-Pullers are leaner & typically fall into the 35lb.-55lb. weight range (ie, Alaskan Huskies). The Freight-Pullers are typically 60lbs. on up (ie, Malamutes). I currently have an Alaskan Husky female, she weighs around 45lbs. My fam used to have a male Quebec Husky that was the size of yours. Your Husky is definitely meant for pulling heavy loads, at moderate speeds, over distance.
I have a huskie, And ive always let her of the lead... Started it at my local golf course... Play with her/him and they will stay with you.. Same with my sisters husky.. He is 13months and he will walk right beside you...
r da dog is bre cute how old is it it huge mn ova average size but still adorable and i hope one day wen i get a husky of my own itll be just as gud as diz 1
he is so beautiful, he looks like the alpha male of a wolf pack, on some picture national geographic would feature. congrats on a show-stopping dog :)
also, the name buddy makes him even cuter if that's possible lol
lol good ol buddy doing what huskies do :-P i wish i could allow my dog off leash these days, my retriever that died a few months ago never went off lead even when he was buddy's age. i want my husky to be able to go offlead im just too scared to let her
I learned my lesson. I had fantasies of letting my sibe off leash too, however; one two many chases ensued. It's safer for the two of us if he stayed on leash. At dog parks it's cool but not a regular park. Too many husky owners have advised me against it. but props if you can pull it off.
hehe he looks like he having a blast good for him.i wouldlove to have a husky!!i think there so pretty and got great carritalistics.(sorry cant spell lol)
i see you have him of a lead many ppl tell me u cant have a husky of the lead but im like 'lik any dog if you train it rite it will do what u ask it to '
when buddy runs away. how do you make him come back to you. i got a husky she still a puppy and she wont come back so we have to chase after her.. then she thinks its a game.
Don't chase her. Stay where you are or run the other way, so she'll chase you. ALWAYS praise her when she comes back to you and NEVER scold her when she's running off. You may also want to carry some small treats with you, as her reward for coming back, if she runs off.
I use a trigger word to get my huskies attention. They have tunnel vision and selective hearing...especially when they break loose...and they will! For my friend, I just yell "peanut butter" and usually he will come back. Of course I must reward him when he does, because otherwise next time he will call my bluff...Huskies are just way too smart, as soon as you think they are trained...look out!! They are not for most people, do your homework...if your both compatible, the rewards are amazing !!
I didn't. Over time (after he turned 8 or so) he got better and better off leash, but he still likes to try to make a run for it once in awhile, so I only let him off when we're far enough away from any roads etc, though his "runs" are rather short these days :-)
If that was my huskie 'chukha',Rabbit would be on the plate come supper time.
This is a nice looking old husky.Chukha is ten now and still keeping fit walking the malvern hills here in the uk.I guese when he is 14-15-16-he to will chase a rabbit as any natural hunter would.[ Prefering tuna and kibble later].

He's about 80 lbs, maybe a little less now. Breed standard is 45-60 lbs, but he just kept growing. He's 27" at the shoulder.

My huskies were fine off leash at the park.
The problem was when they got out of the yard through some new ingenious escapade. Then, the chase and search was on.

Not true. My husky, although not the best trained, is extremely smart and listens well.
When he's off his leash out of the yard he just runs. I literally have to tackle him to get him down.
