Not too common within the tropical belt, due to the deep warm layer (anything above 0 Centigrade). Also, cold fronts, which are, for the most part, not present in the Tropics, can play a role in hail formation via a number of variables. Lastly, a lack of tall mountains, which can lift air into sub-freezing layers can help. A good example is the Himalaya's which are known world wide for hail frequency.
