"I Wanna Be Free" is an appropriate song for a tribute to the Golden Age Wonder Woman since bondage was such a dominant theme of the comic books at that time. It seemed like no story was complete without at least one scene in which Wonder Woman was either stripped of her Amazon powers because her bracelets were chained by a man or Wonder Woman was helpless because she was bound with her own magic lasso. Of coarse, someone always rescued Wonder Woman and she was able to defeat the villians.
Thanks for posting this...and esp for writing about the HISTORY of Wonder Woman...I know A LOT of folks probably had no idea. She is my FAVORITE of ANY superhero.
Original source riff for the Beatles version of "Honey Don't"?! As a big WW fan, let me add in thanx that with the same title you could do the '60s Wonder Woman to the Monkees and the '80s to Queen!
tHANX FOR THE QUESTION! There are a lot of great songs about wanting to be free, but Davy Jones singing "I wanna be free" and Freddie M.'s "I've got to break-" fit funknroll's neato choice. Your friend Aretha did a great freedom cry in "Think", and Havens at Woodstock does a Freedom worthy of our heroine. The 70s songs I can think of are more serious like that - Bowie singing "Heroes" or Daltrey screaming "Free Me!" I'll get back to you with something more fun when it comes to me!
It must be said though, that what ever the stated goals of the creators, they had an affection for bondage scenarios far beyond what the plot called for.
The noodle like masses of the art also could be said to contain many images which left one a little suspicious of whether they were having a little Freudian fun.
I'm sure the publisher listened to the pitch and said something to the effect of, "Superman with tits, eh? I like it!"
Inspirational to girls? Yes! Pandering to boys? YES!
that's all phenomenal, friend, but would you mind awfully telling me who minted the music?
