  • everything we thought we knew is the opposite, its a contrarian's dream... I love it

  • @gasmanucf a contrarian's dream? no it's not!

  • @gasmanucf no ur not!

  • humans take in infomation ,this is how we move on and progress ,so those in control of us all make sure we get the info that keeps us under thier control ,and man its working brilliantly for them coz we aint doing shit to stop them. LOL we are fucked SATAN rules and we are all going to hell ha ha .jj7

  • Maybe I don't get something. If there is any 'core definition' to evolution it would seem to be this - chaotic constant changes over time. Some adaptations stick and others do not. It seems to my way of thinking that if nature was static there could be no change and therefore no evolution. Am I missing something? Yes I am perhaps oversimplifying but you get my point.

  • why in god's name haven't you guys made adam curtis prime minister yet?

  • @highway234 because we're british and therefore fuck-ups with stiff upper lips lol

  • loving this soundtrack

  • Unfortunately, democracy can lead to propaganda and corruprion if not grounded on the ideals of a strong republic where certain things can not be voted on.

America needs to get back to it's republic.

  • Another thing--while the narrator begins by critiquing the notion of "ecosystem" as mechanical, he concludes a weaker thesis: that ecosystems are merely chaotic and not stable. Of course this too is a great oversimplification, for ecosystems can be relatively stable for thousands upon thousands of years or even longer, and sustainability still is meaningful for human society. Also we have no viable alternative to the concept of ecosystems, which still works quite well in describing reality!

  • @duffmcduffee I agree with you, and I agree that this idea does not make political struggle irrelevant or unnecessary. In America, we need to work toward the restoration of our democratic system and I believe we should work towards the establishment of democracy throughout the world. In this way, hopefully we can avoid the games of the elites and begin to engage in the cooperation as opposed to competition that is necessary if we hope to survive in our natural environment.

  • Also, not all communes failed. Communes evolved into the co-op and cohousing movements. Yes politics came in, but so did structures for consensus decision making, etc.

And not all the recent revolutions have been failures in the least! While it is important to acknowledge that politics and power aren't going away, the internet can and has played vital roles in political organizing in Egypt and elsewhere.

  • Politically, it doesn't matter whether we view nature as stable systems or chaotic dynamic change--both are used by power elites to control. For instance the latest trend in corporate management is to try to convince employees to embrace and be enthusiastic about change, to exploit chaos, etc. Meanwhile the fundamental hierarchies of power remain relatively stable--a minority of powerful, rich elites.

  • @duffmcduffee It's all about controlling the dialectics. It's not whether you believe that nature is stable or chaotic, but how the argument between the two is controlled.

  • It's kind of interesting to me that these theories were even proven to be overly simplistic by experiments with robots. Machines proved that natural systems are not simply circuits, even system made OF machines.

  • @solojam whenever they become sentient by themselves its a possibility- but sentience also brings with it the instinct for self preservation which could be humanities death knell

  • so basically it boils down to-

a bunch of overinflated egos with ignorant idealistic tendencies wanting to fuck with shit to "make it better" instead of leaving well enough alone?

  • @1x93cm it seems the smarter we seem to get the stupider we are

  • @1x93cm Yup. Pretty much.

There's more than a few of Adam Curtis' documentaries follow along that theme: check out the Century of the Self, the Trap, Pandora's Box. All fantastic.

  • Anyone know where to find the next episode in this series? And indeed superb soundtrack. Thanks for posting.

  • we don't understand ourselves let alone bloody nature/reality, any logical ideas are just that.. more concepts...

  • The posture seems to be 'we are machines'.

Wrong! Machines are us. We made them, we programmed them; they followed us.

Pretty obvious to me at least...

  • @Lsdfunk Whether Humans are Machines, or Machines are Human, it's the same conclusion.

  • He is fond of reusing his favorite material. It creates some really nice continuity in his work. For example, his preferred CAPS-font is a trait, his use of archive material is, Eno's music is, john Carpenter's music is, the Cold War is, Oedipus comes to America is, and it depends on what your definition of the word "is" is.

  • Anyone help with this - The music starting about 09.25, is it NIN, Atticus Ross or did i hear it in the series Touching Evil (US version) (which as a side note was brilliant and should be on DVD)??

  • what's the song that starts @26:33?

  • There are only 58, 628 views on this page, in a world of billions, and many out of this number were multi-tasking while watching it, stretching their attention thinly amongst a "diverse" range of "smart"phones, computer monitors, mp3s and more. You can watch this documentary but it means as little as a drowning man just looking at the life preserver tossed out to him.

  • By commenting on this videos page we, myself included, are participating in the very thing Curtis iscriticising and warning us against. Let us all be careful not to allow the system to become our only means of fighting it.

  • lol at the penguins at 13:45

  • THIS IS UTTER BULLSHIT! Biologists all know that with mammals, there is always a leader. For example, the leader of wolves is the pack leader, and the leader of apes is the alpha male. Humans are mammals, thus order among us is natural. We are not plants and most definitely not computers. Unlike humans and other mammals, computers and nature don't need hirachy. We do. what they are asking for is communism

  • @unknownfakename Of course they're asking for communism - they experimented with communes obviously. But it's not the kind of "red" communism which is associated with the term by most people, the cliché soviet Russia. One should also consider that humans show very distinct differences from other mammals, they developed civilization. Humans are capable of plenty of things neither wolves nor apes are.

  • THIS IS UTTER BULLSHIT! Biologists all know that with mammals, there is always a leader. For example, the leader of wolves is the pack leader, and the leader of apes is the alpha male. • I don't think a critique of the holistic understanding of a cybernetic "ecosystem" is invalid. Yes, there is some contingent base for reality, whether it be biological or socio-political in nature. However, our conventional and passive character creating obsession with a secure system of balance today (Gen-Xers are the worst) is fundamentally related to holistic theories of ecological consciousness borne out of the hippie era. Good for Curtis to show some guts and spur some debate.

  • DOES ANYONE ONE KNOW THE NAME OF THE FIRST SONG BEING PLAYED? THANKS.

  • @TheCrazzykiller It's called 'Baby Love Child' by Pizzicato 5.

  • while the documentary was interesting, it was also heavily biased. The use of mood music to signal how one should feel about a particular part was a little annoying. It was also humorous at times because I felt I was knowledgeable about some of the technical subjects and the mood was just dramatic and irrational. btw, hippies are freaking scary!

  • the commune thing creeped me out. I wouldn't want anyone to tell me what they were feeling about me, I think I'd vomit uncontrollably.

  • @lordjavathe3rd So you're telling the people wanting to tell their feelings about you your feelings about them wanting to tell their feelings about you?

  • @konrad303 No, I'm just warning any readers of my comment that its a generally bad practice to put someone in a situation where they would have to publicize their feelings about any particular thing. That would turn their developing concepts into ones meant for practice, which they are not. Only concepts which turn into memes may be disputed, the others are constantly being developed.

  • @lordjavathe3rd The concept seems to be to experiment with a state of as little privacy as possible. Of course we people raised in some kind of "western" civilization are not used to that. Certain indigenous folks may have other traditions where this behavior of total honest thought transparency is seen as normal. It could have its advantages if practised carefully.

  • As humans we look at nature and think, how peaceful and tranquil, but this is only from our position relative to it ie we have no natural predators and always enough to eat, if you are further down the food chain eg a bird or a worm you are constantly in fear of starving or of being attacked and eaten, a very different experience. Similarly a billionaire looks out of the window of his mansion across his huge garden and thinks what a wonderful world, lets preserve/conserve it just as it is...

  • the song name baby love child by pizzicato five

  • I wonder if the failure of the communes etc happened because of the generations of programming/abuse that we all endure in a dominator society- this surely would take years of experimentation and new insights and understanding to evolve from, not a few years of randomness by a tiny group of folk.

  • Resource Based Economy! Research it!!!

  • The balance of nature is NOT an illusion. An illusion must be seen in some way. This balance has never been truly observed or recreated. So therefore it is just an imagined idea that had to be resolved once again by the species of human, who tend to need to relearn this lesson over and over. We'll never stop riding nature 'till she bucks us for good.

  • @PS3Juggalo True, but I think here Adam Curtis is drawing attention to the fact that the 'balance' in nature is one of continual evolution. There is no self-regulating system that looks after everything and allows life to flourish in equal measure relative to the environment. Nature is in a constant state of flux and destroys and creates in both equal and unequal measure. This is the pitfall of using nature as a model for a civilised society. Respecting nature doesn't always mean emulating it...

  • @firestartertwistedfi isn't that a slightly dangerous approach to adopt? sounds like an appeal to authority -which isn't scientific! One possibility might be that local or separate successes in scinece may be one thing, but a commitment to a holistic theory like Gaiai is quite another.

  • @CK2890 Thanks very much, checked it out and yes it is! Some great stuff Morricone in this too, Jill's theme from Once Upon a Time in the West.

  • I really like Adam Curtis' films but this one seemed a bit unfounded in parts. It challenged some of my worldviews, but it lacked support for some points and I did not really get what the overall message was meant to be. It seems he mixed up "balance of nature" with a static nature. Without a certain balance of nature, 500mil years of life would not have kept this planet liveable. And even though many communes of the 1970ies failed, some still exist and other nonhierarchical groups do as well.

  • Always interesting, but not entirely convincing. In fairness he makes some huge leaps, but the message I take from it is that someone always comes along and fills a power vacuum, and vague, fuzzy 'revolutions' are doomed to failure because they don't factor in the counter-revolution. Shit, that sounds Stalinist.

Phillip Ball's Critical Mass and anarchist theory in general are fucked if Curtis is right.

  • Chaos bitches... get used to it. Order is just an illusion that the people in power need you to beleive to keep you under their greedy little thumbs.

  • Well done and thought provoking. The episode kind of left me empty when it dashes the concept of natural equilibrium, but this emptiness is then replaced by the concept of life and nature in constant flux, making every moment sad and precious.

I'm afraid though, that some will take this to mean that the environment is a lost cause, and so not to fight the environmental status quo, when really it only means that the technocratic CONCEPT is flawed, and social alternatives are still possible.

  • We need a Resource Based Economy now.

  • @Icavotz You might want to check out another doco by Adam Curtis, Pandora's Box.

It discusses the idea that one can centrally manage an economy through science.

  • @churchofstfu Thank you, but Resource Based Economy is not communism, nor technocratic elitism.

  • @Icavotz It is a planned economy, which is what Pandora's box discusses.

It also smells very much of technocratic elitism, and none of the many videos I've watched nor the FAQ or any other Venus Project documentation has convinced me otherwise.

For the record, I am a libertarian socialist and am very sympathetic to any alternatives to Capitalism, but I find the venus project from what I have seen to be naive and underspecified in equal measure.

  • @Icavotz

Please educate yourself. I dont want to come off as an idiot, but you are literally standing in the way of human progress if you believe in this. You are condemning humans to slavery and totalitarianism if you believe the nonsense from for instance "The venus project". Sorry for writing in this way but you really need to take a greater look at it. Don't fall for the intent of a system. Often the intention is very much different from the result.

  • @niklasbastholmhansen There must be a link between the economy and the resources of this planet, and no one left behind. That's not totalitarism, that's human rights, that's freeing people. The path is not easy, but it's something that we have to do.

  • @Icavotz

    Hi Icavotz,

I appreciate your good intentions. they show that you are probably one of the few people that actually cares about disadvantaged people. I commend you for that. However, your good intentions do not matter only results matter. A hungry child will not be fed by your warm heart, only food can do that. What you suggest would inevitably lead to totalitarianism in the form of communism, which is probably the worst cure to the disease you illustrate. If you really want to help out

  • @niklasbastholmhansen You, as many people, seem to believe that communism inevitably can only exist in the form of some evil totalitarianism. That's pretty mindless. Communism in history got abused just as many religious movements with originally good intentions. As long as people really just practice the original spirit, things can very well be great and the hungry child will actually get fed, there even might be no hungry children at all.

  • @konrad303

Hi Konrad, thanks for your comment. The reason why communism can never be the good system that many of its proponents wishes of it is because of the centralization of power which is one of the defining characteristics of a totalitarian system like communism, fascism and socialism. Centralization of power is great when great people are in power. The problem is when bad people gain power, and the sad part is that the worst people always reach the top in political systems.

  • @niklasbastholmhansen Who says communism can only work centralized? Take the hutterites, for example. They practice a form of communism for hundreds of years already, way before Karl Marx was even born. They live in small communes which are almost self-sufficient and exist independent from each other. A lot about them is quite old-fashioned of course due to their strong long traditions, but similar colonies could absolutely be operated with a modern concept.

  • @konrad303

    Hi Konrad,

Communism is per. definition centralized. very few people in the form of politicians direct all production and distribute all of the goods among the people. The "commune" is said to own all means of production. It can never be communism if all power is not centralized. Maybe we are not talking about the same here. You write about self-sufficient, and independent communes. That is certainly not communism. That sounds more like voluntarism or anarchy as some people call it

  • Respond to this video..

The reason why bad people are preferred in politics is that politics is not about ability to create value, but about creating coalitions that you must be willing to leave when it is smart to do so. That is why you see people like Obama who seemed to be genuine become the obvious liar he is. Gitmo still open, deficit not halfed within first term, Libya(WTF?? ) and continuation of the two wars. We need to realize that politicians are liars. Them all, Bush, Obama. All.

  • Respond to this video...

So it will always be the worst of us who seeks political office and it will always be those most ruthless, willing to lie, willing to be morally bankrupt that are the most likely to get elected. You must lie as a politician to win. It disgusts me. So systems based on centralized power in the hands of politicians are dangerous. Communism etc. are examples of these. No chance of being good. Your heart is in the right place, your mind needs to follow it :)

  • @niklasbastholmhansen As Yoda says: the quicker way the dark side is. People with lower moral barriers have more action options. But this is a problem with every form of government, not particularly communism. And in every form a system of checks and balances has to be developed to counter that. Limiting the scope of power to small entities (ie. communes) could be another way of keeping damage low.

  • Respond to this video...

I completely agree. Every form of government has this problem. That is one of the reasons why I do not believe in a government. Governments are not something we need at all. There is nothing substantial in my personal life that would be any different without a government. Governments enable the greatest forms of human corruption: The belief that you can live at the expense of someone else. It is the greatest most destructive force on the planet. I effin hate governments.

  • @Icavotz

Then you should commit yourself to the interest of achieving results instead of just showing your big heart. No doubt about the fact that your convictions are pure and your heart is in the right place. But your proposed solutions would bring you the absolute opposite results of what you are seeking. Your results would be communism and human misery. It would not bring the god results you hope for. Please do not stay as a person only with good intentions. We need you to be involved. :)
