Very startling sounder on this one...Had my speakers too loud and jumped out of my chair!...Seems strange to think back to the days when color TV was a big deal...But back then it was...
...who said to Paley if CBS didn't adapt and change, they would lose a lot of viewers who had just bought new color TV sets. After the scare of the '64-'65 season and the ouster of Jim Aubrey, regular colorcasting turned out to be a very smart move.
By 1967 most of CBS' shows were color except for daytime reruns of sitcoms originally filmed in B&W.
@Mcnzlea - And it didn't hurt, too, that Philips introduced a color studio camera, marketed under the Norelco name and designated PC-60, that used Plumbicon tubes and provided a better picture than what RCA's color cameras were providing at the time (especially the infamous TK-42 which, in manufacture, succeeded TK-41's which were in NBC studios up to 1969 and, in some cases, as late as '71). But this development served to aid in CBS's "anything but RCA" equipment buying policy.
Then again, CBS wasn't all that interested in color broadcasting. They had a technological edge in color television technology in the early 50s until RCA countered with something better, and theirs was chosen over CBS'. For the next decade or so CBS decided not to use the RCA system all that much, at one point very rarely, and Bill Paley had to be coerced into crayoning his program schedule by newly installed CBS-TV president Jack Schnieder....
Yes, "A Charlie Brown Christmas" opened with this color bumper...AFTER a staff announcer declared (via a network slide featuring the cast of the show normally seen in its time period), "Because of the following special program, 'THE MUNSTERS' will not be presented this evening".
NBC originally telecast "STAR TREK" from 1966 through '69; THEIR color bumper, "The following program is brought to you in 'Living Color'...on NBC" was originally seen before each episode. Through a series of mergers, CBS now controls the Desilu/Paramount TV library, and distributes "STAR TREK" through their "CBS Television Distribution" outfit these days, 'Richard'.
Fromthesidelines: you hit it right there on the nose. I was going ask from which programs in 1965 this logo was used. I definitely remember these shows, especially Green Acres, my all-time favorite.
In 1965-66, I was only in the third grade when these shows were on. Of course, i didn't start watching Green Acres until 6 months later; starting with the Molly Turgis episode, and I continued to watch it ever since.
And what prime-time programs were telecast in color on CBS during 1965-'66 that featured this bumper?
"LASSIE", "MY FAVORITE MARTIAN", "THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW", "THE LUCY SHOW", "THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW", "HAZEL" (from NBC), "THE RED SKELTON HOUR", "PETTICOAT JUNCTION", "THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES", "GREEN ACRES", "THE DANNY KAYE SHOW", "GILLIGAN'S ISLAND", "MY THREE SONS" (from ABC), "THE CBS THURSDAY NIGHT MOVIES" (those in color, naturally), "HOGAN'S HEROES" and "GOMER PYLE, U.S.M.C.".
CBS aired this color "bumper" before the start of virtually all of their shows (the exceptions were CBS News programs and most of the network's black and white kinescoped film copies of live and taped color programs) between 1965 and 1970. This is the "Simms" version, seen during the 1965-'66 season. The "Hite" version aired through the summer of 1970. When the network celebrated its 60th anniversary in 1998, this was again seen occasionally in prime-time.
@fromthesidelines, another exception would be CBS' daytime soaps, which would not switch to colour until 1967. I was a little kid (I used to watch the soaps at my grandmother's house back in the late' '60s), but as I recall, they did not use this logo, and instead announced that the show was in colour over the opening credits ("Now, for the next thirty minutes, presented in colour, 'As the World Turns'", etc.)
Hal Simms was the voicover heard here; this was for the 1965-1966 season. Bob Hite took over voicing over this CBS color ID beginning in the fall of 1966.

CBS had the worst intro logo. NBC had the best.

@wannawatchu66 You'll be happy to know that when Hogan's Heroes was released on DVD, they kept the bumper.

@wannawatchu66 I read on Wikipedia that Bob Crane actually personally performed the drum parts on the theme song.

With all that "reality TV" crap floating around CBS, it's a wonder it didn't put its eye out...

I'm glad I don't remember this, because it would have scared the piss out of me.

They also used this intro on some CBS programs during the 1997-98 TV season. Probably as a special occasion.

Yes.

And also the regular announcer for "What's My Line?" from 1956 to 1961 (and sub-announcer both before and after).

@GOOSEYGOOSE9 In this clip, it was Hal Simms for that one season (1965-1966), but beginning with the 1966-1967 season, it was Bob Hite.
