  • I can't find the version but I was there the night they recorded it. Beautiful show.

  • Thank You !

  • I've just been reading about Dave Bidini in the Globe. I like the guy, but this stinks. Sounds like they're making a joke out of it, a send-up. Lightfoot's ox has been gored.

  • @GeneralParadigm

Imagine that you knew nothing of the history of the song. Would you still think from the sound of this rendition that it were a send-up of something?

I'm quite prepared to agree that Lightfoot's rendition is much better, but I don't know of any reason not to take this rendition as perfectly sincere.

  • @GeneralParadigm Not a send-up at all. It's Gordon Lightfoot's song, but as performed here sounds just like a Rheostatics song. To me, that's an ideal cover - if I want to hear the original, that's easily solved. Tho the band members share an irreverance of sorts, they're extremely respectful of music, musicians, and Canadian culture. It was the first recording by them that I first heard, and I loved it immediately. Not to convince you to change your taste - to each his or her own. ;-)

  • picked up Melville whe it came out! brilliant album! the guitar at 6:35 is one of my favourite guitar parts ever.. it seems so ridiculous but it completely emphasizes the idea of a musty old hall in Detroit... doesn't it? 5 notes.. totally send my stomach into my throat!

  • This is such an epic version of this song.

  • Gordon Lightfoot's version is one of my favourite songs of all-time, so it's a great credit to the Rheos that they came up with such an original and haunting take on the song.

  • No doubt the live vs kicks! and I thought, at first, I'd stumbled upon an odd jam by my favorite Colorado band "The Samples".

Please post it if you find it!

    I heard it on Last.fm -

  • Welcome

  • so awesome. Saw them live long ago

  • thanks for posting

  • Thank you for posting this. The arrangement is phenomenal. I especially love the way they arrange the amalgamation of the 4/4 wing feel over the 6/8 basic rhythm at 5:26. Brilliant.

  • Are you able to find/load the live version from the '97 live album? Been looking forever. :(

  • @guym2222 No I cant find it either
