we would challenge our athletes by making them do this up to soft mats until they are falling forward. They would hit feet first but landing very short to fall onto their backs keeping their head in protecting their head and neck. This drill helps them to prevent the kicking out or exposing their head in a bad situation.
would one use this to teach a safe landing from any over rotated backward salto?
or more used to enhance coordination (i.e. drill/progression for double pike)
really neat ...and interesting. i assumed in an over rotated situation out of a backward salto the gymnast would drive arms strong above head to ensure the roll out taking the wieght on arms and shoulders and less on complete neck. or drive them above strong enough to completely stop rotation?
