Well it's supposed to be a joint she's smoking. Who really knows for sure? This isn't the whole film. There's a wider shot showing some of the other people in the room. From what I've seen of it, Marilyn's the most 'normal' person in the room; certainly the most beautiful. I don't think smoking weed is that bad, but I'd never do it myself. I just see no benefit to smoking it whatsoever, as all it does is dull your senses to give you a false sense of happiness. THC and various other cannabinoids have plenty of research behind them to suggest that they help combat (or at least postpone) cancer (a documentary here in britain a few years back showed the workings of a government approved lab with a massive hydroponic weed farm - they were trying to find a way of getting the benefits out without the patients getting high). in that respect it's not too bad.

@Oldenheimer1913 having said that though, at the end of the day you're inhaling the product of combusting organic matter, which is never particularly good for you - can't remember the exact figures but cannabis smoke is supposedly 3 or 4 times more tarry than tobacco smoke. but that's really as far as the cons go. you can always use a vaporiser or make cannabutter for use in brownies and space cakes, then there's hardly any risk at all.

How is marijuana "good for you"? The point is that simply saying "Smarty-pantses A, B and C smoked weed" doesn't really mean much one way or the other, because, in the same vein, I can say "Smarty-pantses D through Z did not", or I can say "Dumb-asses the world over do" or I can mention that Sherlock Holmes is very clever character and yet had a cocaine problem. They're all useless as far as actually proving a point goes, which was my point (hence the "Anecdote is worthless." part).

I completely agree - major problems only arise from overuse (the same as many legal drugs) and crimes related to it being illegal (and having a look at the Prohibition movement of early last century should give insight into how to deal with that).

Marijuana is a drug because when it is taken into your body it alters the way your mind functions.

That said, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, etc. are all drugs, too. Not everything that is a drug is illegal, and not everything that is illegal is a drug, but marijuana most assuredly is a drug, and most assuredly is illegal (to some extent) in many places.
