Can you even IMAGINE a movie like this being made today? There once was a time when movies were made that had real characters, intelligent dialogue, a plot that you actually had to pay attention to. Where scenes were longer than 5 seconds. Other movies of 1962: "To Kill a Mockingbird", "The Manchurian Candidate", "The Miracle Worker". People stood in line to see these films. Look what was showing Summer 2011: Harry Potter # 8, Scream #4, Kung Fu Panda 3, The Hangover 2, Iron Man 2.....
@minimac93 Yeah. Only an idiot would forget when a movie such as Iron Man 2, which pushed the bounds of cinema bother technologically and artistically beyond what was ever previously conceived as possible, was released in theaters.
@jacobestes Who the hell are you? Why do you care? Furthermore, I'm unsure what "cinema bother" is, but I feel like Iron Man 2 is unlikely to have been the pinnacle of it.
This is one of the most effective edits in cinema because what comes before (compelling actors inside, one with a lit match that is metaphor) and what comes after the edit (the sun, desert and THE theme . The edit is not a jump cut (a jump cut edit slices a segment out of the same scene). This is a hard cut. A hard cut of the highest order.
There's a similar impressive cut in Perfume when the woman is being hanged after she is shown as turning her head towards the camera in the market. Does anyone know if it's on YouTube? I can't find it.
I think you have to see this movie from the start to appreciate the cut. It's a massive change in setting, time and mood all in a single cut. His lighting the match is referenced earlier in the movie ("it is recognized you have a funny sense of fun".)
There are a number of time jump cuts earlier in "Lawrence" that always remind me of that sequence from Citizen Kane .. from child Kane to young man Kane all from the line, "Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year. "
the first couple of times i watch this classic i never noticed this cut because i was watching it here, and the OP split the scene in between the cut.
I don't know why this happened... my dad asked me to put on Avatar that day... but I have my heart on the Godfather... does the classic film have its own power?
i don't get what's so good about it... he blows out a match and then it cuts to sunrise, what's the connection? i should probably watch the film shouldn't i?
@therealdjcammONUTUBE I definitely recommend it! Bear in mind this is all meant to be seen on the big screen, too, so we're only getting part of the effect here. But I think what's good about it is everything - Lawrence's mysterious smile before he blows out the match, the colour of the flame and sky, the suspense as the sun rises, the sweeping view of the desert (the first in the movie), the pacing, and Maurice Jarre's music. The combination is perfection! Does this help? :)
Strange how you can see in 2 minutes why David Lean won the Academy Award for this movie,& literally thousands of others spend billions,on tens of thousands of other movies, and never even get close.TEL was a 5'5"Chameleon of a man; who learned Arabic and parlayed that into a quick career in the military,to find out that he didn't like what he learned;and spent the rest of his life trying to forget about it,while being tormented by people who thought him strange- because he could give so much.
Will commenters below just shut up and watch the movie, else I'll call the ushers.

@minimac93 Should have been "cinema, both technologically..." instead of "bother."
And, I was being sarcastic. No one gives a fuck when Iron Man 2 came out. Not now. Not ever.

@jacobestes Oh, please tell me more about this sarcasm thing, you great wordsmith. I have never encountered such a strange word before...

@minimac93 Sarcasm is where you say exactly what you mean so the listener understands clearly.

@jacobestes Oh, how interesting... do tell me more.
No, please don't. I'd be much happier if I could forget about your sad little existence immediately.

@minimac93 When is "immediately?"
jacobestes 3 months ago
@jacobestes Oh, go die in a hole. Immediately, of course.

@minimac93 Nevermind, I looked up "immediately." Now I think you were being rude.

Peter O'Toole (his talent and of course, his looks) blows me away. That Oscar, along with 7 others, belongs to him. He's too perfect.

You mean a rip-off? most people use the term 'tribute' or 'homage' in America now, I presume?
