@davlor86 My fav song by U2 is "with or without you" off joshua tree... buy achtung baby is def. my fav U2 album... the consistency of epic songs is amazing
There are some really retarded discussions here. If you don't like U2, fuck, don't listen to them! They have been around for a very long time, they haven't always been a huge arena rock band. And comparing U2 to stuff like Skinny Puppy (respect) is just moronic. See, if Skinny Puppy tried to make music that sells, they would probably fail. Because that's not what they're good at.
Don't get stuck up on the false integrity. Everyone makes music to sell it, even though few started out that way.
@stakleni00 i will never EVER understand why people claim to dislike music they chose to listen to. That's like wearing hats and bitching about how stupid it is to wear a hat. Whenever someone does something like this, somewhere in the universe Darwin is weeping. Or possibly laughing.
@stakleni00 thank you friend :) Hopefully have some vids up pretty soon.. hopefully. My sifu HATES cameras and won't allow one anywhere near him (unless he's the one behind the camera) so it's hard to capture myself in class. lol anyway.
i rem'ber buying this album on the day of its release and i thought 'wow' what a brave thing to do.u2 came so far from away the joshua tree sound when they could of played it safe and released something simlar.who else in the music industry dared to make a massive move like this?maybe the beatles.
I like how NIN made a pretty polished cover of a song U2 really were trying to make noisy and weird, despite NIN usually being the noisy and weird stuff by comparison.
Music at its heart is expression, and Trent's current happiness is clearly seen in his cover of this song. I personally enjoy it, it's different, sure, but it's something new and unexpected. Plus, doing an "industrial" cover of an "industrial" song is a bit unoriginal; a characteristic that NIN cover songs never possess. I mean really, you can't expect the man to be perpetually stuck in a Broken/The Downward Spiral mindset for all of eternity, can you?
I'm a real fan of NIN (and I barely know U2), but 'sadly', in this case the original is way better than Trent's cover (which sounds like... a leftover from some mellow soundtrack project?)
Well, after repeated listenings I realized the cover has a certain charm, you must take into account that Trent and Atticus probably reasoned on what type of makeover to give the song, and they probably decided to go into an unexpected direction. Said this it is my opinion that Trent has either lost a part of his creativity or has just became lazy - songwriter wise - in the last few years. He recycles a lot, something he would never do pre With Teeth. Mellow sound courtesy of Atticus
I remember vividly my 1st time listening to zoo station in my dad's then new 1992 Honda as if it happened yesterday. This song completely blew my mind.
The 1991 U2's album Achtung Baby was an answer to the backlash created by predecessors The Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum which helped the band break the USA and become multimillionaires and mainstream superstars. The band wanted to reinvent it's sound to regain it's credibility with the alternative crowd and Edge was listening to a lot of NIN in that period, so it influenced Achtung Baby's sound. Prolly this is the reason Trent was asked to contribute a cover for the tribute cd.
I thought the same thing, but Trent's interpretation turned out sounding nothing like "Metal". I am actually quite surprised by how warm NIN's version is.
@tribestros what did you think of NIN's tetsuo theme? That was recent & sounded pretty industrial... or not, by your standards? who knows... the borders of these genres seem arbitrary at times
True, but I don't think it's a bad thing. I really like the cover and to be honest, I like the fact that Trent keeps coming up with new sounds and ideas instead of doing the same thing over and over.
And with the events of August 1991 in Moscow, this track marked the unofficial start of the 21st century. On December 31st 1991, the Soviet Union officially ended and U2 were the best rock band in the world for the next 7 years.
@dwc311 lol I know. I love Skinny Puppy - they were a big influence of my hero Trent Reznor's work. But 'meatissodumb' is such a dick that I felt I needed to be one back.lol.
@TheFirstJedi I C lol. Ya I know Reznor openly admitted to ripping off the SP song Dig It when he made Down in It. I hate it when bands rip off other songs and dont admit it. But yeah the new Skinny Puppy and the new Ohgr is really sick. Now I know Skinny Puppy has never and will never sell out. I do feel like the new SP and Ohgr is more catchy and accessible. But by no means commercialized. I was very suprised to see that Deadmau5 was"thanked" in the linear notes of Handover.
@TheFirstJedi Also have u heard the song Tragek off Ohgrs Undeveloped?? I LOVE that song so so much. But its got sucha catchy chorus. Towards the end of the song the way it fades out or whatever sounds so poppy. Im sorry but it sounds like something some chick would listen to on the radio. I love that whole song though. Definatly my favorite Ohgr song. But yeah those guys have never did any shameless acts of selling out or anything like that. GOOD music. Im finally trying to get into U2 here.
@dwc311 Skinny Puppy is AMAZING!!! I'm also a huge fan of KMFDM; you should try out the songs "Virus", "Money", "Juke Joint Jezebel", "Godlike" (Chicago Trax Version), "Stars & Stripes", "Mysterious Ways" (U2 Cover), and "Light" (feat. NIN).
U2 is my all-time most favorite band ever though. "Beautiful Day" is one of the best songs ever written in my personal opinion. "Achtung Baby" is by far my most favorite album also.
@TheFirstJedi Ahh yes KMFDM is definatly one of those bands I really need to check out. Yeah I'm looking for new bands to get really into. Because when i get into a band I go all out and buy all their albums and make it a priority to listen to every single one of their songs and know the history of the band etc. Yeah Depeche Mode is definatly my favorite band of all time. Im the most crazy about them. Than comes Genesis/Peter Gabriel than NIN. But yeah this Achtung Baby stuffs growin on me.
Hate me all you want but I've heard this for the first time because of the upcoming NIN cover, and honestly parts of this sound like it could have been on TDS as it is.
@OhMyGodMuffins Yeah I listened to it last night... I dont know what to think. The original sounds a lot grittier than the cover. NIN's version sounds almost dream-poppy. I'll listen again, gotta figure it out.
