Nice vawt..How many widing turns and diameter of coils, magnet size. what number wire gauge for the coils? Plus height, length and width off the main blades & blade supports measurements? Try to give as much detail as possible to build one....thxs
@platinum243125 Dosent really need to be high. Generally the higher up you go the faster the wind speeds because there is nothing like buildings or hills blocking the way.
@vince99percent it it really produces 20KW then that about $4.40 of electricity an hour, if the wind blows 10 hours a day, thats about $12,500 of electricity a year, Thats not nothing.
It is possible to use wind to come off the grid, coupled with solar ,and there you have it! if you use the new lithium batteries the chances of becoming grid free would be a breeze. (no pun intended)
Shift the thinking a little bit here. If every home owner/builder installed and maintained a 3-5Kw turbine system with a grid tie how would this work? If one of these was considered as part of a house then a serious chunk of load on the grid would be offset. Using the current model- big central generating plants- this would be non-feasible. The wind power fluctuates too much for utility level storage batteries to smooth out the supply, but with single households it would be workable.
@bmecher I like the way you think .. go a step farther and replace the grid tie with batteries and simple inverters. Since 5KW grid tie inverteres cost around $3,000 USD. Another option is to use DC appliances and have a smaller inverter for things you can't find DC versions of. Many appliances are available for RVs that are 12V DC.
Now here is my question.... How many 1.5KW GE turbines do you think it would take to replace the US grid? Lets see if any of you have actually thought this through.
@pardpardpardpard If you believe that wind generators will replace the US grid then you will believe that time travel can be acheved using a flux capacitor.
@Texmurphy51 ,so what are you saying ,its impossible to harness enough green electric for the americans or worlds needs, come on some countries dont need any carbon powerstations to survive now , eg hydro power
@pardpardpardpard Please name one of those countries. Countries who have tried to use wind to replace the grid reach about 30% & run into problems because wind is not reliable. They need to use fast start turbines who when cold starting put out massive CO2. Turbines take almost 2 years of running to pay for installation energy. Last 20 years (maybe) then take energy to disassemble. The US woud require 3Million 1.5MW turbines to replace the existing grid with NO storage. Not Practical
@Charlesincharge42 I am not saying it is not practical at all. Its just not practical to think the entire electric grid will be replaced by wind/solar. This is the mentality behind us not drilling for our own oil.
You only need to look at ethanol to see where this is all headed. Science already knew it took more energy to make ethanol than it provides but Ecofreaks convinced Gov officials who know no science that it could work.
We now are starving people by diverting corn to fuel.
@Texmurphy51 Agreed on all counts, I just wanted to point out that some areas are ery windy almost constantly.
Ethanol makes zero sense, I believe part of the lobby for that is/was from farmers that wanted more government subsidies. Present industrial farming practices in this country use about 10 calories of fossil fuels to make 1 calorie of food ... making that back into fuel is about as stupid as it gets.
@leakedfromtv Have you heard about Feed-In-Tariff? Its a system where any excess power from your solar/wind are sold back to the power company,by the end of the month your bills would be deducted & the power company would PAY you according to how much kw/hr you sold to them.Better get hybrid grid tied system than off grid. Please refer to your local company for more info.
Dude, that is SO true. That is how it is perceived by many...even though the American people cannot see that their government policies of waging wars for the control of oil and other resources has contributed to the stready decline of the dollar for many, many decades, through excessive military spending, corporate greed, banking scams, and that the weaker dollar harms their property values more than anything else. More so than a beautiful, functional work of art would.
The thing that reduces their real property values, not appraised values, is permitting their own consumerism to create massive priovate debt, as well as permitting the wealthy to lobby the shit out of the government to engage in trade policies to move their living wage jobs overseas, coupled with the wars to maintain control of the resources that a beautiful turbine woud reduce the need for. Something is only worth what someone can afford to pay, regardless as to appraisal value.

@Charlesincharge42 I agree with that.
We can do a lot just by becomeing more efficient.
Solar domestic hot water in warm areas of the US.
Factories upgrade their systems for more efficient boilers, systems etc.
Smaller, lighter cars, Less red lights where possible.
There are a lot of things we could do.
I live outside Pittsburgh & we dont have a mass transit system into the city because of our Union Bus drivers. The Trade Unions control the city Gov.
