Music has no color, religion, race or creed. Janis is one of the greatest Rock/Blues singers of this century. Unfortunately, like many of the great ones she never lived long enough to give us more.
I recall finding Janis' music at age 13 in 1973 and a little paperback biography- I recall reading. Most vividly I remember many quotes from Jerry Garcia.. but mostly, how she found herself dependent upon Kris Kristofferson amongst others to find suitable songs to really showcase her talent, and the disappointment in her backing bands' inadequacies as musicians.
I've seen alot of her recorded performances, I like this one, I can tell she's sober and she looks more refreshed, in some of her other tv appearances she looks like she hadn't bathed in days, which was actually the case! She looks good here, I think had she lived in the 70s she would have changed with the styles and wore makeup and done her hair better.
For a white woman she was raw, blusey, soulful & interpreted the rock/blues no better than anyone else! What a treat she was to give us 3 years of recording of a standard to set as a real blues performer...even better than Mick Jagger & Amy Whithouse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i'm italian . i think janis joplen has been,in my oppinion the most rock star. even now there no one like her. great voice with difeerent exspression.sorry about my english!!
This was when it was still about the music and not selling out to make big bucks. Janis paved her own way and thank goodness she did. She was beautiful inside and out. It was so sad to lose her so young.
@lvrbsky While I agree whole heartedly that Janis paved the way, one of the first female singers to get paid more money than her male bandmates, Janis absolutely 'sold out' in order to become famous. She dumped BBHC(except Sam) to move to these studio musicians at the advice of her new manager, Albert Grossman. She needed a more polished sound to appeal to the general masses & to make the 'big bucks'. She was driven, aggressive, & knew what she wanted in her career. RIP Pearl, we love you.
I believe she was true to herself...true to her natural self...she doesn't need makeup and dress up like a stereotypical wannabe model to prove that she could wail! I miss her, she was a jewel.
@DOGGONEIT99 ok dont forget this was the times too from when i was a kid, young girls refused to wear makeup and new clothes as part of hippie movement and rebel against establishment..
Usually watching a live show on video falls short to the experience of being there. Janis comes the closest to bringing the emotions of a live performance to this medium than anybody. A truly talented individual.
wow she is REALLY hot and has a SMOKING body. i mean really. but she died before she became one of the ugly formerly hot singers (who are still amazing singers) like Grace Slick and Nancy Wilson
your're right... the drugs & the booze did make her look a lot older than she was, but so did the fact that she wasn't wearing a drop of makeup when performing under those hot lights. you would be amazed what a difference it makes.
@gizmokeeper ca c'est sur c'est autre chose que les Lady Gaga ou les rihanna de maintenant. on s'en fous du physique, de l'apparence, c'est a sa voix que l'on doit l'admirer. c'est une chanteuse pas une top model ;)
@gizmokeeper JANIS NEEDS NO MAKE UP, BECAUSE SHE'S NOT A MODERN STARLETT TRYING TO MAKE UP WITH COSTUMES WHAT THEY LACK IN TALENT. SHE WAS PURE TALENT FOR SELL... ANYONE CAN LOOK PREETY IN MAKE UP. NO EVERYONE HAS TALENT...
I agree with the ideology they lived by but boy--I don't think I could have endured the hardship that they and the rest of society suffered during that era.
I grew up -very safely- in 1980s suburbia. But I love the sentiment which they express through their music--Joplin, Jefferson Airplane and Simon & Garfunkel, to name but a few.
janis is unic. I does'nt mater the the look, but hte soul.

appearance means absolutely nothing when you are "listening" to a performance like hers.......
Stop worrying about if she had on any makeup....geez..........leave that for the E! Channel generation.

I don't know why people are commenting on her looking bad...to me her rawness makes her hot as hell. There are some things make up can't do.
