If you listen to Valhalla Knights: Elder Saga music, you'll notice that Motoi was influenced by hitoshi sakimoto style of composition. The reason, I have no idea, but I guess he wanted to try something new. So far the game has a great soundtrack because Motoi knows what he is doing, lol. I just love Japanese composers.
@BurtonNewsted he's the drummer for the band Rush. He's known for having a gigantic drum set. haha I guess that's a bad reference to make on a video about VG music
@BurtonNewsted except that he completely blows Geddy Lee out of the water on keyboards. Geddy couldn't even finish the piano lessons he paid for! He should stick to what he's good at (bass)
WTF WITH THE CROWD?! AFTER ALL THAT EPICNESS THAY JUST CLAP?! NO SHOUTING? JUMPING AROUND? CASTING EXPLOSION SYMBOLOGY OR SOMETHING?! or side kicking?
@666Deathscythe I had a friend who went to Japan and watched the live action Beck movie. He told me that he felt like rocking out to the music but noticed that everyone else seemed to have a respective viewing of it (if that makes any sense) and didn't do that. So it's probably a cultural thing.
For those who want to play along with this song ALONG with other Motoi Sakuraba epicness, I've created a backing track for it. A medley actually (Star Ocean 2nd story, Valkyrie Profile, Till the end of time and Last hope, in that manner)
There's a difference that I've noticed between Western and Japanese video game composers. Western composers favorite film-like video game music with a heavy emphasis on orchestration, but also techno/trance to an extent. However, Sakuraba and Uematsu are two examples of composers who get their inspirations from elsewhere: Jazz, Latin, Classical, Baroque, but most notably Progressive Rock. I think game music needs to stop trying to be film music; it needs to be different, like Sakuraba.
@DarkDruid7 Yeah, I know how you feel. I'm a student composer at the moment, I would say that I'm heavily influenced by Sakuraba with what I want to make, but the classes I'm just starting have more of that western approach to how things will be done (for the first semester, then it will be about creating your own style). A lot of the music's good between the two ends, but definitely agree on the Western approach.
If you want your Sakuraba influence to show in your music, read over the scores for his music (by this I mean a MIDI file or fan-made sheet music) and see the techniques he uses. Of course, if you're TOO influenced by one composer, you'll sound just like them, which is why it's good to study other composers from different periods and genres. Sakuraba, himself, was influenced by Bach, jazz artist Chick Corea, and progrock band U.K., among others, which defined his own sound.
Well if you ever make any compositions, you should post them to your channel. As an aspiring composer, myself, I like to see what others with similar influences can make.
@DarkDruid7 Not only that, but the fact that Japanese composers actually give a damn about having melodies, themes, and motifs/leitmotifs that run throughout the entire soundtrack. I can't recall a single Western game offhand who had memorable music because they *ALL* sound the same -- bland, tutti orchestral sounds with no substance.
@Viertel well there are a couple westen soundtracks that are good. Gears of war is one. the games that have the best music in my opinion are indie games though.
@jlyh55 Motoi Sakuraba is the keyboard player ; he's a freelance videogame music composer. Also did a couple of solo/sideproject records. This is a one-off live rendition of themes from games soundtracks considered "classics" as far as console RPG OST go (talk bout a niche !).
@jlyh55 He's a composer for various JRPG's including the Star Ocean, Golden Sun, and Valkyrie Profile series. He can also play the keyboard like the devil himself. Look him up on wikipedia if you're really curious.
He is one of my favorite composers, but IMO I think he was better in the 90s. If you like his music try listening to bands like YES and other progressive rock, most of his inspiration is taken from those bands.
This guy is playing on more than 10 keyboards, sometimes two at the same time. It's like he's on some kind of jaw-dropping musical throne; the king of MIDI ascended.
If you go to VGmusic.com, there are a few great midi interpretations of the song. If you have a program that can turn read midi files and turn them into notes (like Sibelius), you can have sheet music!
I haven't heard much of Sakuraba, so I'm not really sure. I love Nobuo Uematsu's work, though. I'm gonna listen to more of Sakuraba's music tonight, though. This song sounds kinda like a Black Mages track, and I'm really loving it.
I think... No one's better between theme. They all have their own style, uniqueness, so it can't be compared..

Maybe... :/ Nobuo and Motoi have complete different styles. I don't think it will fit well. They are both great musicians, nonetheless, but I personally think they sound better doing their own things.
Combining the two of them with Kouichi Sugiyama (Dragon Quest), Koji Kondo (Mario/Zelda), Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger, Xenosaga I), Hironobu Sakaguchi (FFXII) and Yoko Shimomura (KH, Mario RPG) would create the ultimate composer, pretty much. I love many compositions from all seven, and the closest the gaming world has come to a game with all of them is SSBB with its stunning array of tracks and composers.
