I remember owning the VHS of Awakening. Goliath's "Angel of the Night" scream was longer and WAY better than it subsequently has been on the DVD releases and once in a blue moon reruns on tv. Wish I could find the original scream.
I can't believe the only time I heard about this show was back in an advertisement in Archie Comics. Now I'm 20 and this is the first time I've watched this episode. And already I find it epic. If only I watched this when I was a child
@Microglia1 i know it's no comparison but i used to be late for school for power rangers came on at 7:30, what a dumb time to put it on in the morning because that's right before school starts, and i used to be late for peter pan too, and i used to wake up at five thrity for sonic the hedgehog, which for some reason wasn't popular, but i loved it
I wish they would make an awsome Live Action movie based on Gargoyles, instead of some really bad tv movies done by Syfy, (Gargoyles Wings of Darkness, Reign of the Gargoyles and Rise of the Gargoyles, lol. There was that one tv movie done in the 70's that was decent, called Gargoyles (and in it there was a Gargoyle named Goliath according to the credits). I did hear that they are planning on making a feature film now based on Gargoyles, but not on the cartoon.
How, I ask you, HOW, does it get better than this? Bat-winged gargoyles with attitude, 1994 New York City, kick-ass NYPD chick with her puffy jacket and skinny jeans, Xanatos ('nuff said), guns that aren't ET'd out, a complex, thought-provoking plot, the cast to do it justice, and all the mythology and lore you can gorge yourself on. Not to mention beautiful animation, wonderful voice acting.... Seriously, the '90s were the era for cartoon swan-songs.
2) this show.... takes me...way..waaaaaaay...waaaaaaaaaaaay back......it takes back more then spider-man or batman TAS;
It takes me back so much that the only thing I remember is that as a small kid I used to pretend I was a gargoyle turning to stone when on top of unused statue busts in a park in my home town; it's that old.....wow
No problem, he appeared in several movies, one of his most famous portrayals is as Childs in the 1982 movie The Thing, you can look up clips of him here on YT.
Originally, Patrick Stewart was wanted for the role, but his agent asked too much money without even consulting Stewart.
Once Stewart found out what he missed out on, as I understand it, he was ticked at his agent.
Many other Star Trek alumni portrayed major, occasionally recurring, and guest roles on the show, including: Jonathan Frakes (Xanatos), Marina Sirtis (Demona), Michael Dorn, Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton, Colm Meaney, Avery Brooks, Kate Mulgrew, etc.
That said, Keith David did a wonderful job. And besides, since the animators drew the characters (even the gargoyles!) to resemble their actual voice actors as much as possible (David Xanatos resembling Jonathan Frakes is obvious, and so is Eliza Maza resembling Salli Richardson, but look at Demona and Marina Sirtis, or Hudson and Edward Asner, or, yes, Goliath and Keith David!), could you imagine what Goliath would look like if he were drawn to resemble Patrick Stewart instead!?
man i remember seeing this long ago one afternoon it was the 1st ep. and i was like wow ever since then i loved the show it was so different. i dont remember much of the 2nd season. man i should of got this on dvd when they had it now they dont sale it no more
This was an amazing Cartoon when I was a kid... Cartoons now a days are cheaply made and have dumb story lines with no violence for the sake of children. Ok.. violence in cartoons didn't mess me up, my fav shows use to be power rangers, ninja turtles and gargoyles and I didn't grow up to be a psychopath lol. Violence in shows isn't detrimental to kids, only in real life. Its just cool in cartoons.
oh my god you are so right i use to love this show it was awesome and do you remember mighty morphin power rangers the movie so cool and still great, and i haven't shot anyone from watching it. thats whats wrong with kids today their trying to make them all gay little shits with high school musical and hannah monfuckingtannah
lols i think one of my best memories was waking up EARLY on sat mornings and watching the awesome cartoons. man, i used to love watching power rangers: lost in galaxy XD and gargoyles...and now...u dont see me waking up early anymore on weekends.
There is a lot of things that makes this show great. The story, characters, villians, and especially the soundtrack and mudic. The little piece after Goliath says " They were leading the horses to decoy us from the castle" is so excelent!! Its so captivating. Love it
The height of the show was the second season--which was some 50 something episodes while the first season was only 13 episodes. Yes, the third season DOES suck, but the main creator of the show and the show's biggest fans don't consider it to be cannon.
The reason the third season sucks is because the material--as well as the animation--all got REALLY dumbed down. So the fans/creator consider the final three parter of season 2 to be the real conclusion--and those are brilliant episodes!
heheh, I think alot of those characters are voiced by Star Trek actors. I know WORF was on it once and I think that bad guy is actually COMMANDER RIKER.
No you're right, it is that woman from Star Trek :) It's trippy that most of those voices came from, as Novatrek said, Star Trek Next Generation. I love this series, and if they ever make a live-action film out of it I'd definately go see it!
Gargoyles, takes me back to a better time in my life. I have all 3 seasons on DVD. Not the same as watching them on TV right out of high school. GARGOYLES FOREVER!! watch gargoyles if you are ever having a bad day, you will leave with a smile and better memories in your mind and spirit.
The first season was THEE shit! But after the second season, it started to loose it's appeal. I think a large part of it's falling off could be attributed to the change in artistic design.
jeez havent seen this for ages i watched like every episode back in the day, i have missed it... i agree with lagato its realli weird now i'm older i have more understanding about it so it still entertains me to a point but i'm out of the cartoon stage but its still good to see these brings back memories
i also have been watching "Rocko's Modern Life" some of you may remember that from back in the day they had awesome cartoons back then *sigh*...

wow watching this show again i can get a better understanding for it and it has more meaning, lol prolly because i was 10 when i first watched it, oo btw the voice acting in this is some of the best voice work ive heard in a long time :)
LOVED this cartoon - it was so literate! Allusions to Shakespeare, magic, pregnant women - Xanatos and his assistant... for a short time, it was the best thing on TV, bar none.
That's what makes this series so great. The characters evolved over the series. you see demona as a second in command and good person, then betray others and descend into hatred. You also see Villains turn into good people.

Same voice actor as the Arbiter in the Halo franchise, Keith David, he has a very powerful voice.
Biankito 2 years ago 6
Christopher Lee could have done it too, but Keith was a good choice
jsplane 2 years ago
Chris is a great actor his voice is great too, but I think it lends more to older or evil characters more.
Goliath needed to sound like a strong but young leader, kinda like Optimus Prime.
Maybe he could have pulled it off, but I don't know.
