  • This intro is much fucking better than the current one.

  • This is brilliant..

Normally I can find a fault to argue on anything; but this guy has his shit wrapped up tighter then a vacuum sealed brick of BC Bud...

  • What software he is using?

  • @MrPEDOCTOR it's gapminder, google it to find it, it's free.

  • These are great stats :D does anyone know the website he used there so I can cite it in my own academic papers?? thanks!

  • - - - Anyone know what the software he is using? - - -

  • @TheRobinL gapminder. its free and you can get it off his website.

  • The seemingly impossible is possible. It is a matter of WILL!

  • I have watched dozens of these TED Talks and this guy makes sense with his data. I realize that you can do anything you want with data, but when you look at the world, this is what you see, just not graphically represented. We need to get over egocentrism, the world is closing in.

  • his fucking wifebeater

it doesn't cover his nipples up

    oh my god

  • What an incredible person

  • I REALLY wish poverty and hunger would be ended in our lifetime. Just like this guy said, we can change it.

  • I am a TED fanatic - and have on my youtube channel - in personal order after watching well over 700+!!! of them - my top 2 playlists with a great running order... there is also a carl sagan complete playlist, arthur c clarke and loads of other hand picked documentaries and debates and art and cultural videos... click on my user name, MrDespo3, have a look round and welcome to despo television & please subscribe and vibe!

  • fantastic!

  • :))))

  • He tells amazing things, really inmportant and intelligent and people are like 'ok' but the moment this man swallows a blade everyone is like OMG LOOK AT THAT.

O well, Hans Rosling is amazing.

  • Quite a good insight... economic power is the means but not the goal... But sadly, most of the ones power... sees these as the both the goal and means because of their greed and desire of maintaining the status quo... They better listen to this man, he's got a point...

  • Check out Gapminder (dot) com this guy's website. They give you acess to all of these interactive graphics, it's fantastic!

  • I'm from a so called emerging country, Brazil. If you check the HDI of my country today, it's not very diffrent from an average european country forty years ago.

The world is getting better as a whole. And if we find a way to replace fossil fuels, and we don't get in stupid, endless wars, it will continue to do so.

  • I think the sword was a good way to make people remember him and his ideas. xD

  • lol @ 14:17 and getting serious XD

  • Free trade for prosperity, for all!

  • I love this guy but i mean... Why did he swallow a sword?

  • @rurede4dis It was an argument for his theory. He said that the seamingly (sorry for bad english) possible is possible. That means that just because you havn't seen it, it doesn't have to be impossible. Just because you havn't seen a man swallow a sword, doesn't mean it's impossible to do so. In other words, he is saying that we can change the world, even though it looks pretty bad.

  • Hans Rosling is really a national treasure. =)

  • I am using the gapminder website but I can't recreate the part (from 4:25) where he has one country (US) moving through time but the rest of the world remain in place. How do I do that?

  • where can i find the program he's using? i want to see the statistics!

  • @Ramsez google gapminder

  • @Lorn4815162342 thanks bro!! works great!

  • 2:09 life expectancy will be well above 80 in the west by 2050.

  • He should have been a salesman because he is very convincing naturally it's quite simplistic. Like Murphy said "If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something"

  • Quite a simplistic model that assumes world economic growth to increase every year.... lol

  • @labonka he's not making that assumption. the only assumption made would be that economic growth does increase over time. of course there could be a world war 3 that brings the whole world to a stop but if you are making those sort of assumptions you might as well just say fuck all and do nothing.

  • @noiserrr You know there's no way to predict economy, that's just impossible. So he might just as well say that his lottery ticket will make everyone rich. That the world develops is of course good, but his calculations are just euphoric.

  • @labonka you obviously are not paying attention so ill stop payin attention to you.

  • @noiserrr Imagine I went to a company and started to say that this company will develop 2% every year for the next 50 years and then rip off my shirt because I am so happy of my "proofs". Everyone would ask what the heck are you on about? He is manic.

  • lol WHAT

  • @noiserrr Word brother.

  • @Veggie13

The catch however is, that this makes us slaves.

We don't own our money, the banks does. Therefore they own us.

And sorry about the word lying, he simply manipulates and perceives us.

When you put a spell on someone, it's simply to spell. Meaning that words are magic, it's pure power. Any one listening to the wrong guy will believe in what he says as long as he uses fine rhetoric and body language as well as showing human attributes.

They play with our suppressed feelings.String holder

  • Hes a big time bullshitter. With modeling you can make anything look good. That does not mean its true. Just like Al Gores Hockey stick diagram of global warming. It's all tampered with, and we buy in to it.

It's hard not to because he is really intense energetic and funny.

I would say hes got it all wrong. It's the other way.

We have never had more slavery than today, and yes there is a interest of the masters to make slaves live long time, it has nothing to do with better world but EFFICIENCY

  • @Totalreformer I'm sorry; what is he lying about? Pretty much everything he showed was data.

  • @Veggie13

    Your right.

Depending on how you present the data and what data you leave out, the perception and result will be totally different.

The amount of happiness, of harmony and of love is far more important than life expectancy.

Who want to life 100 years when not having that?

He wants to show people that Capitalism is Good.

Not knowing that money is only debt.

All states is indebted to the world bank.

Swedes have 60.000 crowns in debt per person.

That's why we have high living standards

  • Vi häf tu nåo a littel mår abaot de wörld.

  • The end was so freaking unexpected...wtf...I love this guy, though.

  • I just love this guys accent.

  • @salmanyafiz

In Sweden we call this accent svengelska or swenglish..

  • @salmanyafiz That's the Swedish accent for ya. that's how we sound when we speak English.

  • We as Me as Canadians we need to know this , I can only hope My Government is listening to what this Men is saying ....

  • I think so many westerners don't believe what anyone says about the emerging economies until they see them with their own eyes. Everyone knows that China and India are experiencing temendous growth but until you see it for yourself, you don't believe it. Especially when so many western media sources are spinning news stories against China and India, China in particular.

  • Nice try with the advert at the end TED, but no one is gonna sit and watch that.

  • This man is a legend!!

  • Hans Rosling's presentation is so inspiring and great that now we are made to do assignments based on his presentation...

  • Hans Rosling is great, so inspiaring!

  • Hans Rolsing= most favorite current genius

  • It really seems like this is the only YouTube video where MOST of the commenters aren't posting ideological rubbish and saying stupid shit like "this guy is lying because he's socialist/capitalist". Is it because most people who would watch this video are smarter than the average youtuber or is it because Hans rosling's presentation is so amazing it shuts all the partisan flamebreathers and pessimists down?

  • Hans Rosling has the funniest accent evar!!

  • yea, and thx, now my dads laughing histaricly because of it XD

  • Fantastic presentation!

It´s a need to think about the climate change in the everyday life. What is progress and what will the cost be? What happens if everyone that is poor will adapt our way of life? How shall we change our way to live?

  • i think europeans and americans are way too creative to just step off the throne.

sure, the future of agriculture, industry, and simple services is in the BRIC and other fast develpoers, but europe, america, and japan always have the advantage of high education levels, political liberty, and free information.

i think all of this will make the previously mentioned countries centers of media, culture, social studies, and really high technology.

  • @6775077 You clearly don't get the message, the world is going to be globalized, not divided.

  • @simontja it can be...both.

  • What exactly is the point he is trying to make? Is it anything other than knocking down a straw man about the world never getting better?

  • He is trying to change our steryotype about developing countries and L.E.D.Cs. Developing countries are rising in the health and quality of live areas while L.E.D.Cs are doing well when compared to where they are coming from. He also makes important points about the development of any nation highlighting the importance of setting a goal of better health and culture and acheiving it through economic growth and governance.

  • @Mastabiff To solve overpopulation you need to evolve all countrys, a developed country doesn't have a increasing population.

  • that's true, because of the laissez faire policy before the progressive era, an average man in the State could only live up to 44 years. And now the conservatives are still dumber than ever, asking for that time of laissez faire back.

  • God! I love the Scandinavians!

  • Amazing presentation!!!

  • Hans Rosling is absolutely great! One of the best TED speakers.

  • What a hero!

  • The most fascinating about all of this is that his affirmations, conclusions and hopes about the future of poverty around the world are based on data, not on some abstract speculative historical theory.

  • @PauloDeLimma I really hope that his data is correct, but ask yourself, would a nonfunction country provide accurate statistics?

  • @labonka I think there's a considerable distance between being able to gather a good amount of information about the effects of a very complex problem and being able to actually solve it. Inversely, the fact the a country can be considered nonfunctional in some aspects doesn't mean it can't provide statistics about it. In Brazil, for instance, we have social indicators provided by federal statistics since the 30's.

  • @PauloDeLimma Yeah, but that data does sound abstract and speculative.

  • @jcgalad Very rarely do you prove something with only statistics since measurable objectives can have very complex causul explanations. Perhaps he shouldn't jump to such euphoric conclusions yet and remove his shirt and all.....

  • @labonka You know, I've been reading up recently and frankly - you're roght

  • @PauloDeLimma

But data of the past can tell you nothing about the data of the future and it doesn't really show you why.

  • @llothar68 Well, considering the pace of change to evaluate where we'll be in the future seems reasonable to me. Of course something else might happen, a big asteroid can fall and extinguish life on Earth, for example. Yet, Rosling sounds more realist to me than those who, because of some ideological conviction, just wait for capitalism to collapse.

  • I do believe that the world is getting better, I cant stand pessimists saying otherwise. I think Hans Rossler has proved my point many times and I think what he says is absolute genius. The largest problem I belive is climate change, It is so obvious that the damage we are doing to the atmosphere is very real, and we should definatley be doing alot more about it to benefit us in the long term.

  • Please forget proper grammar. Think a little bigger than an average american!!! He´s a genious! Thanks to people like him you can continue with your desperate hunt of power! In the near future people with his opinion will rule the world so please shut up......PLEASE!!! USA is not good for our future!!

  • Hans Rosling ...is Awesome, one of the more positive people who can provide a better outlook for our future ....

  • hahaha! Yay!

  • He's brilliant! And Swede ofcurse ;) :P

  • Svårt att höra det var ^_^

  • Well, that pretty much blows up "Austrian economics." All those countries dramatically improved their people's lives with economies using fiat money, not some obsolete "gold standard."

  • Love this guy, he's great.

  • What does the size of each circle represent? Population? The data point represented is just the center of the circle, right?

  • wow such a fascinating graph with the knowledge of those statistics you could draw some really thought provoking conclusions i would assume

  • What a way to bring your point across! 6 stars indeed!

  • Now this video and the one from last year by Hans Rosling shows in graphic detail the issues regarding global warming/climate change (albeit misnamed I think) -- but the issues do come to life here in these graphs. The devil IS in the details. Thank you Hans Rosling.

  • I have seen about 20 of his presentation and I really didn't expected something like this.

  • I like "grandma-verified" statistics!

  • Excellent presentation and enthusiasm.

  • 6 stars

  • The guy is awesome! And swedish! And so am I! I gotta find out more about this guy....

  • I wonder if US abortions factor into his stats?

  • No, a child that hasnt been born cant die... statisticly.. since it never existed

  • i think not....why?

  • His bubble for the US seems to improve around 1973 when US abortion became legal. Getting rid of troublesome babies via abortion would reduce the number of "born" babies dying.

"Grandma data" would include that women's perceptions about birthing babies changed dramactically about then. I lived thru that era.

  • Abortions do not effect infant mortality rate but what the US considers as a live child does. The US standards of a living child are different than Australia's and other developed and industrialized countries. Many critics say child mortality and life expectancy are not a efficient ways to measure a nations health care standards because they are effected by many confounding variables.

  • Grandma verified!

  • Bring me my sword! lol

  • Stunning Final!!

However I must partially disagree on India's PM CO2 statement. CO2 per Capita is baised towards the countries with high population growth rate, like India. And it is precisely population growth the main driver of CO2 consumption, much more than Consumption per capita. So while the developed countries must reduce its consumption, developing countries must urgently enforce population control measures, even if it has to be China's one-child-policy.

  • surely thats hypocritical when America (don't kno if ur American I'm not but only stat i kno) creates 20% of CO2 with a population well below 20% of the world, the country with that kind of population is of course China. And surely it's a dark day when we value human rights so low that we encourage policys where by familys killed thousands of babies, I'm no journalist but i thought in China loads of families were so upset there one was a girl they just got rid of them

  • Ignorance is bliss.

Volcanoes around the world produce (total) around 200 million tons of CO2 each year.

Human activity, in 2006, produced around 25 billion tons - 100x times more than all the volcanoes in the world, the very same year.

Stop posting rubbish and get your facts straight. I understand some people disregard climate change, but you cannot simply fabricate facts to advocate your beliefs.

  • Good idea. Let's do nothing because there are volcanoes! Smart!

  • @putakvospariucrlhs

Your comment was made 1 year ago so if you are still around...where did you get your statistics and other information?

  • Comment removed

  • Awesome.

  • As I posted on the exact same video: Great idea, too bad it is linked to the ever common manipulation of data. It will take statistical analysis to determine the data's meaning, but you cannot have it without the data. Take for example his first table with family size to life expectancy. I can guarantee just because the US has smaller families it has less to do with life expectancy than a lot of other factors, gdp/capita only being one of those. Otherwise, I like the presentation.

  • to arliben:

I don't think he's saying there's a causal relationship between life expectancy and family size. There is a correlation that we can see just by looking at the graphed data, and that's all he's saying. He chose those two factors because they are often assumed to be some of the biggest differences between 1st and 3rd world countries. "Manipulation of data" is interpretation. It's only bad when the manipulation is intended to decieve, which isn't happening here.

  • The choices do show a definate social iimprovement for sure, although I'd pefer more on how the money is split wth in countries I like the way this guy is so genuinly enthusiastic it really counters the cynicism ive always had. However Statistical malpractice is always a danger the WTO for example was sued by Trinadad and Tobago because it deliberately attempted to put them in to recession raises some serious questions about the culture of our statisticians surely.

  • genius, genius, genius, genius!!

this vid is as much inspirational as it is entertaining *sigh*

  • Yay, we Austrians can produce numbers!

  • So can we swedes! Yippi!

  • Comment removed

  • What software does he use?? I want it!!!

  • It's a type of software that he invented and sold to google

  • that was amazing...my jaw is on the floor

  • Could one say that the cultural R&D has been done by the earlier adopters which improves the efficiency of the developing countries' health?

  • Great job! very intresting views on global problems..

  • Gotta say that was the most impressive finale I've seen on TED so far...

  • awesome !! .. been waiting to see another talk of his for a while since his last superb one. He does not dissapoint. Grandma statistics.. a whole new level of validation.. lol. Cant wait for your next talk professor.

  • How can a guy not like that.... grandma stat....? Everything we do, live stems from what we guys remember and or are taught by others. That is just great for a guy to recognize his grand mama. Not having one in your own life, I personally am sorry. As you may be. My mommy/daddies mom's were just awesome, they told me what they were like as kids.... haha... Here I thought I was a terrorist..... gotz itz from themz.... Only helps, with how I treat my 10 year old, ...... humble.

  • Way to make a point!

Can't for Hitchens and Dawkins to adopt his "culture".

  • how do you get serious?

    you make powerpoint!

    hahahah

  • We call that swenglish. My generation don't have that much accent but nvm he is awesome.

  • "GDP per capita: Not an indicator of poverty."

    It IS an indicator.

Sure, the median would be a better indicator... But the mean still gives you a decent picture in a single number.

    (Inequality is rising tho....)

"Length of life: Not an indicator of poverty."

    Wrong again.

Pretty good indicator of wealth, health care quality and nutritional conditions.

"Infant mortality: Not an indicator of poverty."

    Hmmm....

Ok. Fair enough. It's mainly a cultural indicator. (education and hygene)

  • You pretty much debunked yourself. Mean and Median give no information about the distribution of wealth, or inequality, and therefore poverty (and stinkin richness).

People can be very poor and still live long lives, especially when the infant mortality is low, which is the main factor of live expectancy. It says something about the availability of vaccines, about the health system, about culture, etc., but that does in no way equal poverty.

  • Of course they give information.

All of those indicators give information.

They don't give ALL the information, you would need to know exactly how many people are in each income range for that.

They do however tell a lot.

For example, A large difference between the average and median incomes indicates high inequality.

People CAN be poor and long-lived. But in GENERAL, money helps you live longer. There's a positive correlation between wealth and life expectancy if yuo want.

  • So if 50% of the population earns 9900 $ a month, and 50% of the population earns 100 $ a month, how do mean and median differ from a society where 100% earns 4500$ a month? And what is the difference between mean and median in that case?

    Waiting....waiting...

  • You're creating an artificial example where mean and median match.

If one more person had 100$ a month, then the median would be 100$ a month.

(Oh and btw, the mean and median would be the same if everyone had 5000$ a month, not 4500).

In REAL LIFE, wealth distribution roughly follows a power law. The median gives a very good estimate of the wealth of "normal" people, because it isn't biased by the presence of a few super-rich people.

Obviously, having more than one quantile would be better.

  • I am not creating an artificial example, but you are claiming that all societies with inequality concerning the distribution of wealth are pyramidal. Just compare the two Apartheid regimes of Israel and South Africa: The percentage of people that is oppressed and impoverished due to racistic criteria is quite different. In South Africa, a small minority oppressed a vast majority (and some say, still does). In Israel, a majority oppresses a minority.

  • The choice of 50/50 is artificial. It's also unstable: the income of a single person can dramatically alter the median.

Racism in this case has a distorting effect on wealth distribution. But it's certainly not the only means to economic oppression. If you think that there are no poor jewish israelis you're wrong.

There's still a pyramidal structure that roughly follows a power law distribution.

  • See, you're getting circular here. If we'd measure correctly, then it could prove your point, while you don't want to measure correctly.

There are tons of tools to measure poverty, like variability, or a simple graph with x = personal property and y = number of people who own that amount of wealth.

It would be easy for the jerk in the vid to use one of these logical, simple and obvious benchmarks, but then of course his laughable propaganda would be exposed as the joke that it is.

  • Variability in itself doesn't measure poverty.

If you have 100 people earning 5$, there's more poverty but less variability than if you have 99 peaople earning 6$ and one earning 1000000$.

Onse again, a graph can't be used in his presentation. He needs a single number.

Yes, there are tons of better tols to measure poverty than life expectancy. However, none of them is as simple and transparent as life expectancy.

  • Anyway, things depend a lot on your definition of wealth.

IMHO, a person living in a communist country who has access to clean water, housing, infrastructure for education and transport etc, but has no private property is wealthyer than someone with a wad of 1$ bills dying of cholera in a slum because there's no sewers.

It makes much more sense to measure inequality in quality of life than in money terms.

Anyway, what do you suggest using? Standard deviation of wealth? Kurtosis?

  • "Anyway, what do you suggest using?"

    -

"Indicators of poverty: How many people have to live with one d0llar a day (without the inflation tax). Numbers are rising. But the superrich own 110 000 000 000 000 , 00 $. Bottom line: Watch the rise of poverty."

Bottom-line: It would really really really help if you would start to learn to read - and think.

  • The "one dollar a day" poverty line is pretty arbitrary.

Also, it doesn't work well if you want to compare different countries where the purchasing power of an american dollar can have a different order of magnitude.

But yeah sure, it's an acceptable criterion.

I can't remember what we're debating though. I thought it was the fact that in your opinion pro-capita GDP life expectancy etc carried no information about the population's wealth... but it seems to have changed.

  • Arbitrary?

    Did you really write "arbitrary"?

So the fact that more and more people live with less than a d0llar per day is not a sign of increasing poverty and inequality, but of the DECREASING purchasing power of the d0llar in the same time span?

If you can't remember what we're debating, then read it. GDP/capita, life expectancy, infant mortality isn't able to measure poverty.

  • Yes, one dollar a day is arbitrary. (well, it was actually chosen after a lot of research, but that's besides the point).

Why not use 2$ a day?

I didn't say anything about the decreasing or increasing purchasing power of the dollar w.r.t. time. Just that it changes between countries.

I insist that life expectancy is a better indicator.

If the government gives you free food, housing and healthcare but no cash benefits, you're better off than living on 1$ a day.

  • He is the best...

  • Like I have any say in that when my government takes my money by force and uses it for bribeing bad governments.

  • this guy is awesome..i love his presentations

  • Congrats Mr Rosling.

  • he surely proved his point

  • You can realy hear he is from Sweden. Nice presentation!

  • jeez.. that might be the best presentaion i have EVER seen

  • have you seen his first ted presentation? 'Debunking third-world myths'

  • WOW! indeed.

Just wondering if anybody knows what software was he using to do all the bubbles etc. It's interesting how he has presented the data.

  • he is using Flash (Flex environment)

  • It's called gapminder

  • this is available to play with on the web.

  • I think that software is specially made for the UN, he talked about it being available as a beta version (the state before making it GA (generally available)) online, so I guess you'll find it there.

  • WOW!

  • he says 'africa is like europe 100 years ago '- except, africa has aids everywhere right? i wish they had free health care

    i like this presentation.
