@2migell i use this camera to shoot all my films and i LOVE it. no its not what they use in hollywood. if you want what they use there you are looking at $100,000 just for the body of the camera. the only problem with this camera is that it is no longer made. so you would have to buy it off a auction site.
Really enjoy your stuff guys! Very talented. I'm just curious, are there specific settings you enjoy using for cinematic situations on your xl2 or do you guys set everything at normal and adjust in post production? Thanks!
Hi i woud like to know how do you pass the videos to the computer 1-conect fireware and then ? ... i use the dv-pc recorder but i dont know how to use it . and i capture the video with pinnacle but how do yuo pass your video and how do you the letters in the end
I haven't seen any questions about the editing on this sheet of comments, and I'm too lazy to go through everything, What program did you use to edit (colour correction, contrast, etc)?
where you found the light transition you used?? im looking for this transition a lot of time but i don`t have any lucky. i hope you can help me, thanks a lot.
Nice...Just received my Glide cam and vest today..having issue with vertical pendulum and its not a counter balance issue ( I dont think)...My swing down from 90 is less then 1.5 seconds.
But You are getting way less swing in your shots then I am ..good job what ever your doing.
The major difference between Video & Film is a shallow Depth of Field, (DOF). Film has it, video doesn't. Until now; Canon 7D, 5D Mark II & Nikon D90 all shoot with a shallow DOF like film.
XL2 can't produce a shallow DOF without a DOF Adapter, a rig to attach it & a good photo lens. All of that will cost around $3,500. Even if you got all of that, your still only shooting in 480p SD (Standard Definition) instead of 720p & 1080p HD (High Definition). As a Filmmaker I recommend the $2k Canon 7D
Yes, Letus 35 makes a DOF Adapter that will fit almost any camera. But you also have to get the rod support system to attach it to the camera. Then you need a good still photo lens. You'll spend close to $3,500 for everything.
I wouldn't recommend it. For less than $2k you can get the Canon 7D or the $1,200 Nikon D90. The D90 only shoots 24p / 720p. The 7D shoots 24p, 30p, 50p 1080p / 60p 720p.
Those cams. are much better then using a DOF Adapter & their a lot cheaper.
The XL2 is a MiniDV camcorder, the 7d and D90 are digital SLRs - principally still photography camcorders.
How on earth can you recommend a SLR in place of any film camcorder, no matter how good the field depth or how high the definition? Camcorders like the XL2 are designed, from viewfinder to body shape, to shoot moving footage.
Wouldn't a digital Single-Lens Reflex need an adapter to switch its lens from photography to cinematography anyway?
@M2Lfilms I don't get the depth of field thing. Depth of field is the range in distance between the lens and the object where the object appears sharp. Video cameras have depth of field controls as well, and many films contain images with high depth of field. I always thought the difference is actually the fact film tape picks up light differently that consumer-level CCD in camcorders.
@Dustie1984 not quite, dude. It's the amount of space that is in focus. (IE If 10 feet in front of the camera were out of focus, the next three were in focus, and beyond that was out out of focus, your DOF would be 10-13 ft because that is the space that is in focus).
But that's what I wrote. The range in distance between the object and lens where it appears sharp - in focus.
And after a discussion with other ppl here I confirmed by theories, that it's just impossible to replicate film look on digital. I guess we can only get super close, like digital movie cameras do using multiple light-sensitive matrix sized as a 35mm film frame.
@Dustie1984 Depth of Field is a function of aperture size and imaging area. Larger aperture (lower ƒ stop) = shallower DOF. Larger imaging area = shallower DOF. There are cinematic cameras nowadays that have image sensors that are the same size as the imaging area of 35mm film, so optically they perform exactly the same as film.
You can match the frame dimensions and rate of a cine film camera, but film renders light in different ways. More dynamic range, wider colour gamut etc.
I love the look of this footage. I have an XL2 and I love the results of it. What are the filters that you used for this look. Where did you get the film reel writing footage?
Who needs HD anyway. This camera still has a great look. Its all about the films you are making, how they are made etc, You dont have to have HD for it to be great.
can you make the canon xl2 hd? explain. and how much does a wide angle lense run for? were can i get it. explain. and is it necessary to have one. does the xl2 look like real film? explain how if not and how i can get i tto do that. thanks.
The Canon XL2 does not shoot in HD, only standard definition.
Any detachable lens from Canon will run you at least $1000 US.
To find a wide angle lens by Canon, your best bet would be a reputable source on the internet. But this is coming from me, with no damn dealer in town that actually has cameras of this caliber.
Having a wide angle lens isn't necessary; however, it will add to the overall effect of the film you are shooting (should you want a large landscape shown at once)
The Canon XL2 gets as close as it can to looking like real film without actually being real film. This is the best you'll get without actually buying a 16 or 35mm camera, and with post editing, you'll easily be able to give it a better overall look.
Just look at this video, and you'll see that you can get a spectacular look with it.
While shopping for my camcorder, I looked at the XL2 for about a month and learned quite a bit about it. You cannot make it an HD camera. I don't know what the wide angle lenses run for but it is not necessary to have one in order for the camera to function. The XL2 does have a 24p mode (film/movie/cinema mode) which is a nice feature but there is a converter in Final Cut Pro that you can use to take standard 30 frames per second film and convert it to 24 frames per second. Hope this helps.
This is beautiful. Your post effects are right on but your framing is excellent. The camera work has to be good if your effects are also going to be. Despite the HD environment I think the XL2 still holds it's own. Thankyou for this ;-)
Wow love the video, the birds flying goes in with the bjork song. Wow now im really angry i wonder what to get, canon xl2 or canon xha1, i already checked out the test footage on both but having a hard time.
I got a Cannon XH A1 and I love it. I dont know what I would do with out it! One thing though, with HD you have to upgrade everything around it. Keep that in mind. It takes a lot more money to keep active, tapes are more, needing more space on your computer, higher end editing programs, choosing to burn to Blu-Ray etc. It takes up A LOT of room on your hard drive, but it is sooooo worth it! I think going HD was one of my best decisions for my studio!
At B&H, you can get the Glidecam Smooth Shooter Support System Kit (which includes the vest, arm, and the 4000 Pro camare stabilizinger - i.e., everything you need) for $1,769.99. You can probably find a better price someplace else, but I've dealt with B&H for a long time, and they are very reliable - nice products, fast shipping, excellent customer service. This product is on my wishlist right now.
Is it raw footages directly from your XL2 or you modified it, cause the image is so sharp! Also I don't know if anybody as an idea but my 24p footage from my XL2 looks strange since a while, I guess it's when I transfer on my computer, but it looks interlaced when it's suposed to look progressive or either it has kinda lines in the screen when there is movement... Someone has a solution?
that wide angle lens makes all difference... holy shit If I were you I would never take that lens off... you really have a good look going with it... Try adding a CTB filter and dropping down to 24f. That would give a film look indefinite
Good Video !!! Please Tell me , what transition or effects use at 0:24 - 0:26 ?? please :D sorry for my english !!!

We using adobe premiere to edit, the film strip effects made with after effects using mattes.
The song is björk - all is full of love.
It was filmed in Hungary, Budapest where we live. It was shoot with Xl2 (pal) with the wide 3x lens.

And the "look" of the footage? Did you do any color correction in premiere or after effects? This looks great!

how did you do the film strip effects like the writing and the red and yellow spots?? please respond someone

that wide angle lens makes all difference... holy shit If I were you I would never take that lens off... you really have a good look going with it... Try adding a CTB filter and dropping down to 24f. That would give a film look indefinite

These shots are awesome. They are super smooth and kind of the best I have seen with the smooth shooter. Please tell me your set up.
