Ahhhh...that takes me back to my misspent youth! The klaxon sound effect is right but there was also an additional high-pitched electronic "space" sound on top of it in the original. Filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, who grew up in San Antonio, titled his "Grindhouse" movie "Planet Terror" as an hommage to the "Project terror" late-nite horror show.
Hey Rick, bad news my friend. During the week I met up with Mr. Edward Moris who was the other person involved along with Joe Alsten in creating the Project Terror TV Show theme and he said he had no luck in finding the original Project Terror theme while seaching at the KENS TV vault. Oh well, you did a great job in re creating the theme.
Good News, Howard Harris Here. That is a picture of my TV with the Project Terror Logo on it. I do have the Intro on Video Tape. As soon as I load it up on the comptuer, I will post it on Utube. I loved watching Project Terror. Some of the Movies I watched were, The Blob, House of Frankenstein and First Men in the Moon. Just to hame a few.
Hi Howard, Thats going to bring back alot of my childhood memories of staying up late to watch Project Terror on KENS 5. This is great news. I look forward to seeing it soon.
Grew up in Victoria, so all we had was Channel 4 and Channel 5 from San Antonio...and I remember Project Terror, and Captain Gus...Lordy, I'd sure love to see some "Cap'n Gus" footage! I grew up watching Captain Gus...he was responsible for my love of all the old cartoons to this day! All the old WWI-era WB stuff and Popeye...Gumby...all the classic Fleischer Brothers stuff....ah, thanks for this!
We would visit our cousins in Victoria from Houston in the summertime. We would always hear this theme on Saturday night. I swear this music scared the crap out of me when I was like 7 or 8 years old. Oh, the memories!
Yep, most people remember being scared (blank)less by the Project Terror theme, haha. Add to it that it came on like at midnight on Friday after the CBS Late Movie, and that really amped up the chill factor. Thanks for the comment pepper1dancer.
Yeah, when you see folks, especially folks you might even know, relating experiences that take you back as well, or that you had, too. We all feel like we were there. My house was a lot like your house when we we're waiting for "Project Terror" to come on. Window unit ac keeping us cool. Walking down to the corner store for the aforementioned snacks. Maybe friends spending the night, that just made it even more fun. What do you think?
We could relive how Joe Alston originally put it together and whomever else was involved in the production. Maybe even track down some old commercials that would have aired at that time to really get the flavor. I think people like us, who really remember this stuff and it's part of our San Antonio in the Seventies experience could recreate and share this with the newbies. We could have clips of you guys, actual fans of the show retelling their scariest memory, or funniest, weirdest thing.......
I think it would be great to bring back Project Terror to late night on KENS. "Fear Friday" on AMC does great. Imagine everyone that remembered it wanting to tune in to relive the experience with their kids. Jiffy Pop popcorn, some cold Coke's or Big Red. An icehouse stop for pickles, chinese candy, koolaid packages, shake some Tobasco sauce right in your bag of Fritos and you're all set. There's lots of scary movies available. I'd advertise. And I'd love to produce the Project Terror spots.
I loved Project Terror!! The intro w/ the wah, wah, wah background was always much scarier than the movies!! My sister and I used to run out of the room when Joe Alston's voice came on with "project.... terror!!" Then after, we would come back in and continue watching the movie. If I had known that voice was from "Captain Gus," I would never have gone on his show!! I would have been terrified!
So it was mainly a San Antonio thing. I searched a long time. Tried telling a friend about it here in Portland, OR. He had no clue. Thanks for posting the homage and for all the comments about misspent youth and bringing back those days (and those Friday nights). I'm totally there with you guys. Don't know how many times I fell asleep waiting for Project Terror to come on, or crashed before it was over, dissapointed. My favorite is the show with the live head in the hat box in the closet.
Hi Rick...It is really close...It just so happens that Joe Alston was my father-in-law's step brother. Uncle Joe as he was known did voice over the Project Terror intro as well as 5 Star Shock Theater...
The ringtone of the "Alarm" on the iphone is what I believe is the Klaxon sound used on the original Project Terror show. It gave me the "willies" when I heard it!!!!! Check it out...your verbage is perfect! Roger
That is close to the original. This brings back scary memories when I was a very young kid in San Antonio. I cannot find the original project terror trailier anywhere! Any suggestions?
Well, like you, I could never find it either. So, I decided to recreate it as I remembered it. It seems like someone who worked at KENS would have a scrap or two of old tape, but maybe things used to get recorded over after they were no longer of use. Remember, back then tape was expensive and not nearly as bountiful as it was in the VHS heydays. But, who knows, maybe someone will clean out an attic one day and find a badly stored original version of it. You see it everyday on YouTube.
From what I heard from someone that used to work at KENS for 25 years is that when they moved to the new studios on Fred Rd in 1980 they threw away all the old films and reels and stuff they would never use again. Instead of archiving it or donating it to someone that would preserve it, it all got thrown in the dumpster. How sad.
