@duxante When they "split appart" (the tacoma appeared in the States, but in the rest of the world the hilux continued to be made) they were very similar, in terms of appearence and engineering. But the Tacoma was specifically designed for the NA market, that means, softer suspension, better ride quality, more safety and convenience features, more powerful engines, and so on... If you check wikipedia you'll see that the tacoma engines are more powerful than the ones available in the hilux

Namely, the KD diesel engine family which I would choose over a gas engine any day.

The Hilux was knows simply as Toyota Pickup in the US. The Tacoma has a differrent suspension and a few other differrneces that make it more comfortable, but also less rugged and reliable.
