When Tom Lukiwski spoke out and let his feelings be known, he was condemned by the press, and by the gay community. Right or wrong, that`s how he felt at the time. The gay community and the press on the other hand suddenly have a God-given right to play the video that was A: Stolen by the NDP, B: Never intended to be shown in public, and C: Is at least 16 years old. HE HAD, AND STILL HAS A RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH!! Does "mymoosejaw" and other gays understand English?? I think not!

1. Belonging to an urban tribe and being attracted to someone are two different things. Did you choose to be attracted to the opposite gender? Neither did I choose to be attracted to the same one.

2 Must gays you've seen? How many did you really know? How many did you talk to? And how can you be sure they were "doing it" for attention, whatever it is they were doing? And if by attention you mean hatred / alienation from other groups, then yes that's probably what they got.

I think it's safe to say that if homophobia is present in the general public, then it is surely present at a higher level. I also think the issue would be getting more attention had his comments been about jews, blacks, or even women, which I think is sad and speaks volumes. It'll be interesting to see what happens, as Stephen Harper has kicked others out of his caucus for saying and doing less scandalous things than Lukiwski did.

he apologized. He seems humilated. Liberals and NDP are calling on him to get fired for old comments. Did they do the same for all of the anti gay comments from Liberal and NDP politicans in the middle to late 1990's? Those guys never even apologized. Scotty, Douglas wasnt a bad guy, he apologized for supporting sterilizing natives and the disabled. He changed his views. Why is that change acceptable, you are defending the honour of Douglas but want to throw a conservative under the bus, biased?

I mostly agree with you, as someone who was deeply offended by these comments, I found his apology genuine and actually quite moving. I would add though that I find the context, a bunch of higher ups in the conservative party, making these comments a little unnerving. With recent actions in the federal conservative party (attampting to role back gay marriage), it's hard to not feel a little threatened and feel that homophobia is still present at an institutional level.

The main point is that it was 16 years ago. Gaybashing was pretty common then, especially when the scientific community beleived that AIDS only affected gay people. The idea that gays still are contagious and can transmit diseases is shown by the Blood banks not accepting blood from homosexuals.

His comment wasn't that bad, you're getting worked up over nothing.

well maybe not the 90's but when AIDS was first documented in 1981 it was in 5 gay men from LA.

There is a reason why canadian blood services doesn't accept blood from them. There is an increased risk of disease (HIV/AIDS) from gay people. So calling gays disease-spreading is valid, that was my main point in that comment.

Oh fer petes sake, the risk is from having unprotected sex with someone who is infected. There is absolutely no excuse for calling an entire group of people, including those who are in monogamous (and disease free) relationships "disease-spreading".

Canadian Blood Services is getting a lot of flack for their discriminatory practices. If a woman who's had sex with a bisexual man can donate after 12 months have passed, why is the man she had sex with banned for life?

Clearly you have no concept of epidemiology... gays are no more a vector of STD's than any other group. If anything it would be more appropriate to call this a disease of those neglected by society such as those will low levels of education, poor access to health care...! Oh and don't forget the plethora of diseases (besides HIV) that are readily transmitted among heterosexuals such as syphilis, gonorrhoeae, chlamydia, herpes. We need to be wary of attaching labels to entire groups!

The man has apologized and it was a long time ago. The liberals lionized Pierre Trudeau at their convention. I would suggest reading "Young Trudeau: Son of Quebec, Father of Canada, 1919-1944" which shows that he wrote fascist essays,denounced the declaration of war on Germany and even put on an anti-semetic play, which was successful. I knew all these people very well, AND I am and always have been a well known and outspoken supporter of gay and lesbian rights. But good try folks.

Well, there are still a lot of people in society that still think this way. But, it is good to see that they were quickly replied to and the fact that for most canadians today this is not something that should be said. He does represnt a segment of our population so if the voters where he is at want to vote him in again that is up to him. He's damb right he should be sorry.
