  • I haven't seen this game in yearrrrrrssssss

  • Just lovely! First game i ever played on the VIC 20! //ZZAP of Swedish Cracking Crew.

  • Um...my friend is playing right now and he's got 107,750 as a high score. He beat your high score.

  • @mrknowitallasshole My high score is 206250 with three ships. (There is a five ship start mode too, but I always play three).

  • Nice game. They should port it to the iPad and sell it with a controller.

  • There's also a Commodore Elec. ltd v02 from Omega Race, that was designed for the Japanese Commodore 64. It has some different effects but is a bit hard for noobs at this game, who should better play the Vic-20 version, hehe.

  • Wow, it's like a real treasure-box!

  • lol, me and my friends used to call those little spinny things that bounce around ginny pigs XD . and since they hardly ever shoot at you (easier to die by crashing into it), if u got shoy by one u were called a noob

  • I saw this video and just had to leave a message. My first computer was a VIC-20, and I had Omega Race. While I went on to get a C-64 and had Omega Race for that as well, to me Omega Race will always be he VIC-20 version. Thanks for posting; this brought back some memories.

  • Thanks for adding this video on the Vic-20, but the play action and sound is different in the original arcade console. I know as I have an original arcade standup console that I still play from time to time. Got to love what they could do with only 3.5K of memory!

  • @21Laser - The game is on an 8K rom cartridge and the Vic-20 has 5K of ram internally so technically, they would have 13K of memory for this game. Still not very much though...

  • Tac-2 was the best joystick ever...man, this brings back memories...

  • Bingo.

After a long search I;ve found the rom file to play on my WinVice Emulator.

    Let the good times roll.....

  • Wow! Best video on Youtube! :D

My favourite game of all time and I agree with jci10 that the old Vic20 had the best version. I had never seen the vic-1020 expansion before. Cool.

I remember I scored in the high 280,000s but never reached 300000 points.

I used a Top Shot or Hot Shot? joystick which served me well for many years and many upgrades. I got paddles for playing on Super Smash and sometimes used them on this game too. Not as good as the joystick though. Thanks for the vid.

  • i had this and raid in fort knox

i could flip this game on one ship m,y father got this game cause thought it was asteriods

  • YES! I had this cartridge way back. What I used to do to mess about was to thrust onto the box in the middle and sometimes the ship would "stick" to it causing the game to slow down.

That beeping sound when you hit it would hum constantly and annoy my mother.

    Happy days.

  • This is a really nice version. I never expected much out of the vic-20 but this looks really good.

  • Midway made this, the same people behind the Mortal Combat series I believe.

  • I remember playing this game!. I spent the whole thing on the left of the screen, let the ship float up and down and kept on firing without being killed! :D. This was packaged with the VIC 20 I had.

  • Very nice video!

Do you use a joystick or do you use the keyboard to control the spaceship?

If you use the keyboard which keys do you use then?

    Thanks in advance.

  • my fater has a computer from 1979 and he has the crtridge omgega race but i stink at it and can only get 30,000 points

  • Miss seeing the 3583 bytes free screen. Sound, graphics and awesome gameplay with just that!

  • Wow, haven't seen and heard this in well over twenty years! Wasted countless hours playing Omega Race and Cosmic Cruncher until the Vic was retired for good once the family purchased its first PC in '88.

    Thanks for posting!

  • WOW THAT THING IS ANCIENT!

  • Hah! Good to see the old strategy still in use. I also had a tac2 and would play this til my back and neck froze up! Same with Gorf, Radar Rat Race and Poker. Ah, memories...

  • Amazing! I haven't seen that game for 25 years. Great memories....

  • i play this game on Sega!!! Oh my God......

  • When I was a kid my sister and I would watch my Dad's face get redder and redder as he played. Mom said he was going to have a stroke for sure.

  • one of the best ballymidway games out there, i own a upright of omega race, but its dead the board is badly damaged by battery acid.

  • Beautiful...simply beautiful

  • Very nice. I'd be keen to hear more about your Vic-20 collection. Many years ago I used to work for a Commodore outlet and I still have many nice pieces of equipment here myself including some Vic-20 stuff. Great to see the video's on You tube! keep up the great work! .-.-.

  • i've never played O.R. that well! superb!

  • Nicely played!

    You can hear it's a TAC-2 : D

That thing (Totally Accurate Controller) has earned its reputation. Is it even possible to break one? It doesn't even break when playing those olympics-related games where you have to swing the stick back and forth

Does anyone know if this game has some kind of an ending?

  • I always thought that this was an early precursor of Geometry Wars.

  • I used to play a lot at that shit! That is a classic and while I was watching you move, I was like "nice move!" "doh!" "lucky bastard" ... you know... I was not as bold as you were! rofl!

  • Well done! I could never get the second droid bonus myself!

You've got one heck of a clicky joystick, by the way. What are you using?

  • Thanks! It's a Tac-2, the best joystick there is!

  • Well, I don't know about that... for my money, the Sega Arcade Pad (a six button joypad made for the Genesis) works beautifully on older systems. It's so responsive and comfortable to hold!

Hey, if you're lookin' for some other VIC-20 videos, check out my latest submission. I think you'd enjoy it.

  • great!

  • Excellent ship control, I used to play it, I was OK but not quite as good. Classic.

  • Definitely one of my favourite Vic games, must have been around 82/83 when I played this. Picked it up from a market stall for £1.99, couldn't believe my luck at the time. My friends with 64s and Spectrums took the piss, though (their loss!)

  • I looked at your video again and noticed that you have an expanded video console. I've never seen such a thing before, but I can gather that you've got more kilobyte RAM on your Vic-20. Impressive from an 80s point of view.

Also, I noted that the video is very clear. I don't know how you hooked your video camera onto the screen while you can also see what your playing. The quality is superb.

  • Thanks! I recorded the video with my digital camera (not a video cam) standing on the vic-1020 expansion unit shooting the screen. That is why it's not at full frame rate, because of the camera. The game itself is smoother than this.

  • Please play another game. I'd like to see you go up a few more levels.

I laughed when you destroyed the enemy with your ship and then sang the last celebratory cords--blah blah blah blah! It's fun watching you play--like I'm right in the livingroom.

  • You're good at that game. This was the only game my brother could beat me on. I was better at Jupiter Lander, Night Drive, and Alien Attack.

  • Memories... =)

  • Wow! I've got this game as well!!! it's awsome!!!

  • What a nice VIC 20 setup with that VIC 1020 expansion box! :-)

Compliments for very good playing at that great videogame!

  • Nice sweeps, good flying & better than I used to do. You'd think super-intelligent aliens with spaceships would've installed rear-view mirrors...especially after their first fleet gets wiped the first time.

  • Omega Race was my favourite VIC-20 game.

I blame it for my bad grades in first year of high school. :)

  • Wow! Nice playing! One of my all-time favorite home video games back in the day!

  • vic 20's are sweet! I loved the tape deck drive where you could have 50 games on a cassette tape. Very aggressive game play though!

  • Agreed! the VIC20 version was by far the best.

  • The Vic-20 probably had the best conversion of Omega Race back in the early eighties...nice play...BTW what is that thing in the back of your VIc-20?

  • It's a vic-1020 that gives you 6 expansion ports instead of just one.

  • "Eh!" LOL

  • Boray is pretty good at Omega Race.
