  • I appreciate your style Jack. Good stuff. It really helps me keep preparation in prospective.

What about seeds that don’t reproduce? where does that fall into on this subject? Is there something to look for when buying vegetable seeds at the garden center? thanks again.

  • This video made me get off my ass and start gardening last march! Went from one crapy bed to five full beds! Now I have built two more small beds and I'm makeshifting a few into hoop houses! Love it all TY

  • Very interesting.

  • show us what is inside that can. 150 bucks is a very high price to pay..

  • If GMO corn is dangerous to rats... we should send a heavy dose of it to Washington. Anyway, as far as I know, if I wish to buy a veg at the grocery store, I would look for product numbers that do not start with 8. If it does start with 8, it is a GMO. I've seen these product numbers in stores. Are you saying that those products are not GMO? I think they are... As for seeds, I agree.

  • Thanks Jack!! That is very good info!!

  • @tmzrox - Nothing picky there, seeds have certain rules of storage the colder, drier and darker the longer they remain viable. The USDA number an environment of say 70 degrees average. Drop the storage temp to say 30 degrees and the viability time line increases. Viability is based on germination rates, generally the USDA wants 80% or higher so even very long term the seeds are not bad the rate just falls. Say to 50% which when you have 37,000 = 18,500 viable ones. Make sense?

  • @survivalpodcasting were'd you get that shirt?

  • Great video Jack. I enjoy listening to The Survival Podcast on my way to work.

  • Thanks Jack, very informative video.

  • Great review. Thanks, Jack. I'm guessing the previous commentor didn't watch the whole video as you make some of his points for him. Great value for what it is.

  • Without the knowledge of how to save seed something like this is only good for one grow out. Does this include seed saving instructions? I know that is somethign I still need to learn.

  • @jtcweb1 - Yes there is a basic guide that includes growing and saving information for all varieties included but listen to my show today (episode 614) and google "international seed savers institute" between that you will have all you need to know.

  • Thanks!

  • Great review and love the Podcast too.

  • Thanks Jack, great product and wonderful wealth of knowledge.

    PS nice dog!

  • thanks for the upload.

  • Thank you Jack!

  • I may have used language that could be mis understood as too strong, to devalue the product. If so fair enough in your comments. I understand where you are coming from. My experience though is many people tend to "rely" on it and think they are "set", just like some who get into food storage and never rotate or use it and then wonder why everything expires. I just fear a similar thing with this, rather then rotating your own seeds. But your point is valid, I hope u see mine

  • @graythman - Fair enough but if you watched the video you know I covered this extensively in the video.

  • To add to it, yes you are right on so many points. My biggest concern is people who buy into this, tend to think they are set for when it hits the fan. The seeds sit there for 20 years, never used, and they think they can eat forever off this stuff, without the knowledge on how to save the seed from each variety once they grow it. Plus not everyone's dirt will yield.

Grow what you family eats, learn how to save that seed, and create your own seed bank, Mylar sealed bags is overkill anyways.

  • I base this on my own experience. like you said alot of this will cross pollinate. Each plant is different. Yes you are right if I was to price out all the varieties and buy them the price will be comparable.

My point is someone is better off to start with 5 or 6 varieties, learn how to harvest and save those seeds each plant is unique, then extend into other varieties eventually making your own seed bank. Once I have the seeds and knowledge the price to make my own seed bank ZERO.

  • @graythman - So claiming it is a rip off is based on the fact that you can save your own seeds? Not the price and what is delivered? There is nothing wrong with wanting less variety and less quantity but claiming someone selling something at a very fair market rate is committing a "rip off" is total bullshit A bank like this is not a end all be all but I consider say 100 bucks to short cut 3-4 years of work a deal. What is a year worth to you?

  • Excellent Excellent Video! You are right the main problem with going to walmart and getting seeds is not that they are bad, it's that they are most likely hybrid seeds and like you said without experience you'll have no idea what they will do.

As far as the seed bank thing goes, for 139 bucks it's a rip off. If someone really want to learn, the best thing to do is buy a few packs of heirlooms learn how to save seed, and make your own seed bank for less, way less and rotate your own seed bank

  • @graythman "As far as the seed bank thing goes, for 139 bucks it's a rip off. " and you base that on what? Go to any quality supplier and price out this quantity and variety of seed and don't go making such claims until you do. Also price the bags, the desiccant, the ammo can, etc.

Something isn't a rip off just because you can do something similar for less. You sound like a man asking "why did you buy a case of beer for 20 bucks I got a 6-pack for 7.99."

  • =OoO=

BUY the seeds, but don't forget how frickin DUMB we are when it comes to Planting them, Harvesting & storage. PILGRIMS that came to this Country had FAR MORE Horse-Sense than modern Americains about *Things* like this but almost still totally perished.

Buy Seeds, but also take some time to read AND LEARN about Soil PH, Pest & Vermin repelling, proper Planting periods, & Etc.. You Can't just Plant seeds, Sit back with Guns & Ammo & *Wait* for things to sprout without Adequate Knowledge.

  • Jack your the man, I love the podcast and am glad your doing more on youtube its long overdue. Anyway thanks for cutting through all the BS out there and telling it like it is. Also fridays show on the wafati homes was awesome.

  • hey thanks for taking the time to make this video!

  • Wow, thanks Jack!

  • Excellent explanation Jack. You are very well informed.

  • terrific video, brother. :-)

  • Excellent explanation of heirloom, hybrid and GMO. Monsanto is preparing to unleash GMO wheat and alfalfa. This means that all of your meat (anything that is fed a grain or hay such as beef cattle, chickens, sheep, eggs, dairy) will be fed with GMO feed.Just wondering how bad our food supply will be then!

  • @greenerpastures1000 It will be very bad. How about sudden death syndrome in livestock? See globalresearch.ca

  • Amen

  • How can you find out if a seed is a GMO?

  • @marthale7 - Well if it is GMO it ISN'T going to be sold to you in a small packet, how is that for a good start? Again the only crops that have a lot of GMO options right now are corn, cotton, sugar beats (not red ones the big white ones they make sugar out of), canola and soy.

So if you buy organic or heirloom soy and corn seed you are not going to need to worry, FOR NOW anyway. Again the GMO scum want money and money is in mass crops not back yard gardens on the scale they operate on.

  • @marthale7 - Also if you buy from people that have the No GMO Pledge you are good to go. People like Peaceful Valley Farms, Baker Creek, Seed Savers Exchange, Seeds of Change, etc.

The makers of franken seeds don't hide GMO they market it, sell it to farmers, etc. My biggest concern is corn, it can cross pollinate so far almost all corn will eventually have some GMO genes in it. The genie is out of that bottle, corn from china has pollinated corn in America carried on trade winds.

  • Thankyou for the clarifacation on seeds , I thought I should just use heirloom seeds in my garden. I can plant the hybred types just not save their seeds like I can do with heirloom.Great video.

  • @Garrisonpea - Exactly and some hybrids offers some real advantages. Some very disease resistant tomatoes for instance, very mild jalapenos, etc. I personally plant a lot more open pollinated stuff because I like to save seed but some hybrids are really good for certain things. Also with things like carrots and beets if you want to save seeds they have to stay in the ground for two seasons, those are biannuals.

  • Good info.. Thank you.

  • Thanks for the info,,

  • By the way, that's not your pool is it Jack? Somehow I'd have imagined you to think a pool was a great big waste of good gardening space.

  • @JohnnySoprano87 - Yep it is my pool and I consider it about 23,000 plus odd gallons of emergency water. That said we will not be doing a pool at the Arkansas BOL soon to be full time homestead. I have found a pool to mostly be a pain in the ass overall.

  • Great video Jack, I've been looking forward to your review/overview of the Directive21 seed bank. Thanks for giving some important information as well.

  • So what would be some good brands of seed to buy for seed saving? Can I get them from people like Burpee or the like or do I have to order special seeds?

I really want to do some gardening and seed saving. Any tips would be great.

  • @survivalizer - Any seed marked "open pollinated" or "heirloom" will produce seed that reproduces true to type. Check out seedsave - dot - org they have all the info you need about saving seeds for every common thing people grow, separation distances, storage the whole nine yards all free.

  • what's your shirt say?

  • @Chriznak

I was looking at that myself, I found it quite humorous.

  • @Chriznak "Excuse me but I have to get back to work. Someone has to pay for people like you." <--- the shit says that.

@survivalpodcasting Great Video, becoming a big fan.

  • @Splaxx LOL... Shirt says that... awesome typo award for me.

  • @Splaxx thank you my eyes are bad.
