This is probably the only expertvillage video (that has to do with music) that I've seen that is actually informative. Sure, there isn't any real soloing in the vid, but that doesn't matter. These scales/modes are what really allow you to solo without having to put out much effort.

look at a piano. play it from C to C, only white keys and that's C major or Ionian Mode.

Now, start the scale at D and play it to D an octave above, only white keys.

it's still the C Major scale but since you started on the second note instead of the first you call it Dorian mode.

there are 7 notes in a major scale so there are 7 modes.

CDEFGAB - ionian

DEFGABC - dorian

EFGABCD - phyrgian

....lydian, mixolydian, aeloian, locrian

lol at this. Tabs are considered by most to be one of the reasons we have so many guitar players, and barely any advanced. the chord A minor is made from changing a note, not pulling up the middle finger. its not from 577655 to 577555 its from A E A C# E A to A E A C E A.
