This was fun, and some good advice! I am a beginner, and have been asked to take shots of people who are actually non-photogenic, and (of course) to make them look pretty.  I have so far done this in post (lighting, blemish removal), but I am curious if you have any advice for posing people in flattering ways? For instance, for people with full faces, I ask them to lean their torso slightly forward, but tilt their face up towards the camera... removes double-chin. Advice like that?

@thatnikonguy I do, yes! :) I would say I'm a non-professional, though, as it isn't my primary living. Makeup work is actually how I discovered how much I like photography - taking pictures of brides. A few times I was told they thought my shots were as good as the photographer they hired! I've been taking some non-bridal portraits lately, as well, so trying to learn everything I can, as I really enjoy it.

custom white balance is the only way to go saves a lot of time in lightroom. do you like this is better then the gary fong i think the name is

i think if you follow the rules of composition in black and white nobodys ugly... just interesting as for your photos, they seem very underexposed, dont you have a light meter to shoot on manual i find this relatively important when it comes to white balancing.

self conscious people always look more attractive in interesting situations where they appear to have an attractive lifestyle or personality. i genrally mask my white balances in photoshop and can have 3 variations in one picture. I shoot in B&W helping me focus on lighting, contrast, composition and whats happening and because of raw i still get it in colour.
