His style has been widely commemorated as 'singing' thru the horn. This is because he did not read chords and 'internalised' the harmony of a progression. A lifetime of such habits (and 36 yrs of playing) gave him incredible 'ears' and a wonderful facility to just hear then negotiate difficult progressions 'on the fly'. Undoubtedly Chet could have sung and then played (straight off) anything thru his horn ... so there is the secret and the method (if you have the genius???)
