Once again, NatGeo screws things up again and again and again. The "described" video of an approach to the Apollo 11 landing site from the orbiting probe was actually showing the craters Aristarchus and Herodotus (nowhere near the Sea of Tranquility). There is no permanent "dark side" of the moon. Why can't they do just a *little* research and do a better job of really telling what the facts are instead of just presenting disjointed and inaccurately described video sequences?
Whether or not we went aside, how does this film debunk anything? I remember when this satellite returned pictures of the landing sites and in a couple weeks we were supposed to have close ups and I am still waiting. If they are there (or should I say SINCE they are there) I would like to see shots from them.
@billp4, no, that wasn't a cartoon at the end. That was HD video from Kaguya as it crossed the lunar terminator from day to night.
Kaguya was never sent to photo the Apollo landing sites. It mapped the terrain in 3D. The resolution of the terrain camera from orbital altitude is only 10 meters, so anything smaller than that is absorbed into a single pixel & can't be seen in detail. However, images from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter DO show the Apollo artifacts . So, Google that to see.
@LunarTuner I was thinking of the LRO, my mistake. I was able to find the page that said higher res (3x) pictures were coming. As yet I have not seen them. I believe we went (although some of the films might not be from the moon) but my point was, I did not see how THIS film supported either side.
I'm not going to watch it again but I think the cartoon was showing people doing their mission duties in some pod or something.

@bobbijofl8 The retroreflectors are at the sights where Apollos 11, 14 & 15 landed. Astronomers from many countries make measurements using them almost every day! You can't see the flag with your telescope because it's 250,000 miles away and tiny! No telescope has been created to do that. We have not been back because there is no compelling reason to spend all that money and danger again.

I am heart broken that this not going to hapening in 2020..I was telling my son when he is 21 years old. He would see on TV, humans walking on the Moon again. To look up at the night sky in the summer ( maybe July ) of 2020 and relish the thought that humans have return to the start of our jounery out of Solar System..The Moon..I can just ( at age 6.) remember Apollo 17..It is tragic crime agaist science that we are NOT going back ! I do know the more powerful LRO from NASA recently took pictures of all of the landing sites... you can see the flags... the LEM... foot prints and everything... completely debunking the idiot's conspiracy theory....but hey what do I know.

@hurricanewinzz , Japan has also photographed evidence of the Apollo landings. There is no possible way the retroreflectors could be there except being placed by human hands (russia tried with a robot and basically failed). Besides, 850 lbs. of samples, the lack of "whistle blowers", the other technologies, video, photos...the best explanation is that they went.

That's not a rat, they used a crappy camera to film this and there are lots of errors like that with the film. For example, if you look right above the so called "rat", you'll see a white pole appear, disappear, and then appear again. It's just bad film quality.

First off, most of the images here are from japanese space craft, so first off... you're implying that not only did the Americans lie about going to the moon, but also the Japanese.
Second, the reason you can see stars is so easy to explain its laughable. There is no atmosphere on the moon so the sky is black, however the stars are not visible because it is DAYLIGHT and the sun doesn't allow you to see them, just like on earth.

The space is NOT black like what you see in this video! ! Without atmoshere you can see milions of shiny stars! Think of the stars that you can see from OUR atmosphere at night with no clouds!
And now THINK what you would see WITHOUT atmosphere in open space!

They are there. They increase exact photon return by 1,000s of times. I suggest you chat with a lunar laser ranging astronomer. You'd be fascinated.
You do if you want to measure the distance to the moon with any accuracy.
And 'that' was the point.
With the mirrors and the vastly greater photon return rate from them the distance to the moon can be measured to a few centimeters. A feat impossible without them.
If you are asking why they do not appear in this it is because the stars are many times dimmer than the sunlit moon and earth, and the exposure time needed to capture the earth/moon was too fast to show the dimmer stars as well.

The increase in velocity needed to get from earth orbit to a lunar intercept is not that big either. And that change in velocity can be easily supplied by a rocket put into earth orbit with the rest.
Your two different mechanisms are also fairly easy, and it works just like a two stage rocket.

tmtanatos, tell me one aeronautical engineer that says rocketry is too inefficient to leave lunar orbit to return to earth. The numbers add up. It's not only possible, but it has been done 6 times (not including those Soviet probes that accomplished the same task and returned lunar soil samples). You keep forgetting that leaving the lunar surface and lunar orbit is not as difficult as leaving earth, especially when the main return vehicle is in lunar orbit already (CSM).

Attention has turned to understanding the far more complex problem of long-duration space travel (as in Mars). This is much more difficult.

Ok, So the Pod was left on the moon. So the astronauts went from the orbit in the CM and to the moon surface in the Pod. So how did they get back to the CM? That makes no sense. The lower part of the pod, the descent stage, was left on the moon. The astronautes launched to orbit in the upper part, the ascent stage. After docking with the CSM aka the "Apollo spacecraft", the ascent stage was crashed onto the moons surface and the astronauts flew back to earth in the CSM. I do not believe anything, but unlike you i know something about the apollo missions.
Just to prove I know more than you let me explain a very simple concept. This is basic. 1. the Moon has no atmosphere so there is NO possible way to "crash" the ascent stage. You could do it on earth but not on the moon. It would circle the moon in orbit if left behind. Man, you don't even know that what are you doing on this list?? Atmosphere has nothing to do with crashing. If the ascent stage was placed in a degrading orbit, the gravity of the moon will pull it down to the surface to crash.
I do not wish to belittle you in any way, but I would suggest doing some light reading about certain topics - orbital mechanics, and some of the particulars of the Apollo missions. In this way you may be more qualified to enter a debate.

this jaxa cam of the landing sites is bullshit. our 80s made spy sats once read a time magazine cover and license plate from space looking through our thick hazy atmosphere at over 150 miles up. jaxa being 10 times the camera and in HD couldn't get 1 single decent shot of anything from as low as 60 miles up and with no atmosphere to see through. GO to GOOGLE EARTH, ZOOM IN. These photos are taken from only a few mile in orbit and you cannot get clarity of footsteps. we TOTALLY do not have the ability to take pictures from earth of the moon down to footsteps or even the module. even hubble cant do it.
I suggest you reshoot a new video and at least talk a out these facts thus putting that question to rest and stop confusing people wihout the facts.
Star fields is because of the exposure settings on the camera. Stars are actually pretty faint, and it was bright daylight when they took the photos. You have to set the camera for how bright the ground is, which means the stars wont show up since they're relatively faint. If you set a camera for daytime on earth and then take a photo of stars with it on those settings you'll see a black sky too. Same thing.

Whether or not we went aside, how does this film debunk anything? I remember when this satellite returned pictures of the landing sites and in a couple weeks we were supposed to have close ups and I am still waiting. If they are there (or should I say SINCE they are there) I would like to see shots from them.

@billp4, no, that wasn't a cartoon at the end. That was HD video from Kaguya as it crossed the lunar terminator from day to night.
Kaguya was never sent to photo the Apollo landing sites. It mapped the terrain in 3D. The resolution of the terrain camera from orbital altitude is only 10 meters, so anything smaller than that is absorbed into a single pixel & can't be seen in detail. However, images from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter DO show the Apollo artifacts . So, Google that to see.

@LunarTuner I was thinking of the LRO, my mistake. I was able to find the page that said higher res (3x) pictures were coming. As yet I have not seen them. I believe we went (although some of the films might not be from the moon) but my point was, I did not see how THIS film supported either side.
I'm not going to watch it again but I think the cartoon was showing people doing their mission duties in some pod or something.

@bobbijofl8 The retroreflectors are at the sights where Apollos 11, 14 & 15 landed. Astronomers from many countries make measurements using them almost every day! You can't see the flag with your telescope because it's 250,000 miles away and tiny! No telescope has been created to do that. We have not been back because there is no compelling reason to spend all that money and danger again.

I am heart broken that this not going to hapening in 2020..I was telling my son when he is 21 years old. He would see on TV, humans walking on the Moon again. There is no possible way the retroreflectors could be there except being placed by human hands (russia tried with a robot and basically failed). Besides, 850 lbs. of samples, the lack of "whistle blowers", the other technologies, video, photos...the best explanation is that they went.

That's not a rat, they used a crappy camera to film this and there are lots of errors like that with the film. For example, if you look right above the so called "rat", you'll see a white pole appear, disappear, and then appear again. It's just bad film quality.

First off, most of the images here are from japanese space craft, so first off... you're implying that not only did the Americans lie about going to the moon, but also the Japanese.
Second, the reason you can see stars is so easy to explain its laughable. There is no atmosphere on the moon so the sky is black, however the stars are not visible because it is DAYLIGHT and the sun doesn't allow you to see them, just like on earth.

@FLASHGORDON0071, one doesn't need a retroreflector to bounce a laser off the moon, but if you don't want to waste time fishing through overwhelmingly useless photons and if you want accuracy, you use the retroreflectors. They are there. They increase exact photon return by 1,000s of times. I suggest you chat with a lunar laser ranging astronomer. You'd be fascinated.

If you are asking why they do not appear in this it is because the stars are many times dimmer than the sunlit moon and earth, and the exposure time needed to capture the earth/moon was too fast to show the dimmer stars as well.

MrYougotjohn, what you call a "pod" is still on the moon. Recently, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter photographed each of these "pods" still on the moon today. Tell me, specifically what technology do you think was missing in 1969? Can you name it? Who says we CAN'T do it today? You have confused "can't" with "don't." The Soviets were among the first to congratulate the US!

ok, the first technology the space ship, that would be able to land on any other planet outter earth and then come back to the earth. WE(RUSSIANS AMERICANS ALL PEOPLE) HAVE AND HAD SUCH technologies NOT AND WILL NOT HAVE IN THE NEXT 30 years. DO you know that the 95% of the weight of shuttle is weight of fuel? people cannot build something that would be more efficient, learn about austronautics or what science you learn there in US. DONT BE STUPID, we know you were not on the moon.

tmtanatos, be specific. I know that to escape earth's gravity, much fuel is needed, but once a spacecraft is out of orbit, fuel is mostly used for changing direction. Show me precisely what you think was inadequate. You are speaking in generalities. Talk to any aeronautical engineer and he'll tell you that the Apollo program did exactly what was necessary (otherwise, the Soviets, French, Chinese and others would have clearly protested.). Be specific, friend.

lol ofcause you are right in what you are saying, but you cannot leave earth, then land on a moon or whatever and then start from it we cannot, because we (humanity) do not have enough efficient fuel, fuel that is the problem, our space ships (shuttles, rackets or whatever) are inefficient, that what each aeronautical engineer will tell you, that's why we cannot fly to the moon and come back. May be US have send people to the Moon but then these people must be still there on the moon surface.

Getting something from the moons surface into a lunar orbit is trivial compared to getting a satellite from earth into low earth orbit.
That is what any aeronautical engineer will tell you.
The moon is not a black hole, its gravity is very low.

So what? You ignore the fact that first you have to leave the earth. Ofcause it is possible to build a module, that will have enough power to start from surface of the moon, but it is not possible to transfer it there!!!- that is what I mean. the Idea to build two different mechanisms one for deliver to the moon and the other to leave the surface of the moon is in itself inpossible mission, otherwise humanity would send often some missions on the moon.

Why not?
The increase in velocity needed to get from earth orbit to a lunar intercept is not that big either. And that change in velocity can be easily supplied by a rocket put into earth orbit with the rest.
Your two different mechanisms are also fairly easy, and it works just like a two stage rocket.
You seem fond of the word 'impossible' yet give no reason why.

tmtanatos, tell me one aeronautical engineer that says rocketry is too inefficient to leave lunar orbit to return to earth. The numbers add up. It's not only possible, but it has been done 6 times (not including those Soviet probes that accomplished the same task and returned lunar soil samples). You keep forgetting that leaving the lunar surface and lunar orbit is not as difficult as leaving earth, especially when the main return vehicle is in lunar orbit already (CSM).

Ok people, you really believe in many funny things, for example that Lee Harvey Oswald has killed Kennedy, Linkoln's death and so on, I hope americans are not afraid of shame, they get, when the humanity really gets the moon.
P.S. BTW, why still nobody has traveled to the moon? I mean not only US, but USSR or EU or anything else... Ok, why people still didnt travelled to Mars(40 years were enough to develop needed technologies)?

tmtanatos, The U.S. traveled to or onto the surface of the moon a total of 9 times. Since then, there has been no compelling reason to spend that money or take that risk. Attention has turned to understanding the far more complex problem of long-duration space travel (as in Mars). This is much more difficult.
Why has an atomic weapon never been used again on a city? does that mean it's impossible? Why have we not gone back to the Mariana Trench? Impossible? No! There must be a reason.

Ok, So the Pod was left on the moon. So the astronauts went from the orbit in the CM and to the moon surface in the Pod. So how did they get back to the CM? That makes no sense. Man why do people think we walk on the moon in '69 and never do it again. Every other technology in man's history develops EXCEPT FOR travel to the moon? People are so stupid, just like sheep.Just feed them and give them a cage and they believe anything. That is why 95% of the wealth is controlled by 1% of people.

The lower part of the pod, the descent stage, was left on the moon. The astronautes launched to orbit in the upper part, the ascent stage. After docking with the CSM aka the "Apollo spacecraft", the ascent stage was crashed onto the moons surface and the astronauts flew back to earth in the CSM. I do not believe anything, but unlike you i know something about the apollo missions.

Just to prove I know more than you let me explain a very simple concept. This is basic. 1. the Moon has no atmosphere so there is NO possible way to "crash" the ascent stage. You could do it on earth but not on the moon. It would circle the moon in orbit if left behind. Man, you don't even know that what are you doing on this list?? And who is giving you a thumbs up, your mom? That person doesn't know anything either.

Atmosphere has nothing to do with crashing. If the ascent stage was placed in a degrading orbit, the gravity of the moon will pull it down to the surface to crash.
I do not wish to belittle you in any way, but I would suggest doing some light reading about certain topics - orbital mechanics, and some of the particulars of the Apollo missions. In this way you may be more qualified to enter a debate.

Video cameras can operate by remoted control from earth to the moon in real time. man i wish i was in charge of your insurance policy and taxes. people must have a field day with you, you just swallow anything. look at the "first step" off of the LM. Who was the video man taking that shot? The martian waiting outside the ship? Man, you are dense.

Nobody said it was in real time, the operator just had to get the timing right with the 2 second delay. I guess deploying a camera on a boom to film the first steps on the moon is also beyond your imagination.

this jaxa cam of the landing sites is bullshit. our 80s made spy sats once read a time magazine cover and license plate from space looking through our thick hazy atmosphere at over 150 miles up. jaxa being 10 times the camera and in HD couldn't get 1 single decent shot of anything from as low as 60 miles up and with no atmosphere to see through. BULLSHIT! they dont want us to see those sites.i mean come on,most important event to man and we skip on a pic PROPAGANDA FAIL.

governmentcheese, you're forgetting that thousands of photos were already taken of the Apollo program. Some people didn't believe those photos. Why would they believe any now? JAXA didn't design Kaguya's cameras to do the bidding of unbelieving hoax-heads. They're more interested in mapping the moon's terrain. The Lunar Recon Orbiter got the shots everyone thinks they want, but big deal! Why would doubters suddenly believe?

cod5chipmunk, they went back 5 times! Once the American taxpayer got tired of paying for it, they stopped. NASA decided that the better long term investment would be to study long-duration space travel. Why go back for a week? Been there, done that.

ITS SIMPLE DUDE.
GO to GOOGLE EARTH, ZOOM IN. These photos are taken from only a few mile in orbit and you cannot get clarity of footsteps. we TOTALLY do not have the ability to take pictures from earth of the moon down to footsteps or even the module. even hubble cant do it.
I suggest you reshoot a new video and at least talk a out these facts thus putting that question to rest and stop confusing people wihout the facts.

Hubble is used for imaging distant planets and galaxies, the moon is too close.

Just saw a special on Mars. They said you could jump 4 times higher there than on the Earth cause of the lower gravity.
So how come the astronaunts couldn't do that on the Moon with only 1/6th the gravity???

Because of the suits they are wearing. They're very heavy, bulky and awkward. On earth they can barely walk around in them without assistance.

What about no star fields in the back ground from any Apollo/Shuttle missions though???
I've personally seen hypersonic craft being chased by F-16's. (white orbs,no sound) Defying all known laws of physics.
A life changing kind of thing. Hope to hell they were ours!!! (humans)

Star fields is because of the exposure settings on the camera. Stars are actually pretty faint, and it was bright daylight when they took the photos. You have to set the camera for how bright the ground is, which means the stars wont show up since they're relatively faint. If you set a camera for daytime on earth and then take a photo of stars with it on those settings you'll see a black sky too. Same thing.
