I'm no expert on this, so maybe someone else can explain better, but as I understand it, the basic idea is to isolate the smoke by using the building's BAS/HVAC system to create positive pressure in the zones surrounding the smoke zone, and negative pressure in the smoke zone to isolate the smoke, keep it from spreading throughout the rest of the floor/building, and then evacuating/purging the smoke from that zone. Basically.
Yes, it is a 4100U, but I couldn't tell you about the chimes. All I know is that they are Wheelock, and they're freakin' loud as Hell! There have been multiple complaints about their volume by both patients and staff, but (as far as I know) nothing has been done about it.
True, but being a healthcare facility, there is a certain level of descreet-ness that should be maintained.
In the event of fire, the basic strategy in a healthcare occupancy is to "defend in place" — to isolate patients and staff from fire and smoke while emergency personnel respond to the situation.
But, I agree with you - a fire alarm should be so loud it makes you want to leave the area, ears bleeding, women and children crying, etc... but everyone safely out of harm's way.
they did this in a hospital i work at today, only did it wrong and ended up smoking out a whole floor because the fire doors malfunctioned and didnt shut. people thought they were going to die, it was wonderful.
the alternating sound is the nuses station so what is that used for when someone calls from a room and the clicking noise I heard when you walked by it was alerting FOR a fire? like a fire light on the nurses station?
ps.. at 4:44 when you walked by the flighting strobe on the wall theres 3 lights WHITE, GREEN, RED? red is fire so whats the other 2?
the flashing lights are the call lights or something like that. One signifies if there is a certain type of nurse standing on that section. the nurse wears a sensor clipped onto the scrubs and when they walk by the light, it turns it on
But you can't pass the Building Codes Division's Fire Protection Systems Commissioning tests or the Fire Marshal's tests without testing the system in this manner. I believe it is also a JCAHO requirement. The purpose of this was to test Smoke Zones and air flow isolation of the affected area. How else will you fully test the system without filling an area with smoke?
the smoke hung around for a long time! everytime the smoke got to a new smoke tedector the alarm should have re activated! that must have been really annoying. what did you use to make the fire in the first place? i think this would make people gag because of the thick smoke! did it?
They hadn't even opened the place yet, and the fire warden or some offical person needs to test it before the building is opened, or the state might shut it down.
Yes, the smoke was very thick for a time. We used a pair of 90,000 cubic foot smoke bombs in a bucket of sand (seen at the beginning). The air handling system was supposed to isolate and evacuate the smoke, but it took a little longer than expected. That's what the test was for, to find the bugs in the system! No one really gagged, but it did cause a few of us to cough a little. The smoke left a strange sweet taste in the back of the throat, too.
I am amazed to hear how crisp and real the audio sample of the chime sounds. I am also given the idea that I should do the same kind of test to my smoke detectors.
CH70's have a more synthesized sound, like in Coffee and Sugar's vid. They don't sound like a real mechanical chime. This sounds like someone (probably Simplex) sampled the 2902-9234 and put it into the 4100U.
Is test commissioning pretty much the same thing as acceptance testing?

those thing next to the wall that shows red when the fire alarm is on why?
eclire123455 2 years ago
It's tied to the Nurse Call system, and shows that the smoke detector in that room has alarmed.

Is the nurse call system activated by the fire alarm system?
thesdx 3 years ago
I think it's tied in.

are those wheelock ch-70 chimes?
shanewash1993 3 years ago
I think that's a Simplex 4100U system with Wheelock E70 speakers. Wheelock chimes don't sound like that.

gee seeing as it is a fire alarm its not supposed to be quiet

they are CH70s, they're just set to high frequency, high volume.
pivotous 3 years ago
CH-70s don't sound that real. I think they have to be E-70s with the tone coming from the 4100U

No, it's coming from the Nurse Call system.

smoke doors are really solid...we had an alarm at school today and i walked right into one. what are the orange flashing things?
110518jo 4 years ago
i think i know what is the orange light flashing. it happened at our hospital. it shows which room has smoke dector going off.

You know they have smoke detector tester. It comes in a can and you spray it at the detector.

one of the hospitals that I know has simplex with light (not strobe).

wow its really hard to see through the smoke... there should be pathway lighting when the fire alarm goes off ... like the ones in the theater

soccerdude7330 4 years ago
I think they are actually Wheelock chimes
willbill808 4 years ago
yeah they're Wheelock... at 3:48 or so i could see a horizontal strobe that looked like wheelock.
SilentXKnight5204 4 years ago
They're actually Wheelock E70 speaker strobes. That tone is the chime sound on a 4100U.
thesdx 3 years ago
no, actually, they are CH70s 4100U doesn't make the sound. essentially, they're E70s with tone cards on the back that are adjustable.
pivotous 3 years ago
