The lack of civil discussion by public figures in the chamber that represents all Canadians brings the whole system of our democracy into disrepute. And that's reprehensible.

Nope, I would much rather have a republic where there is a better balance of power, which would allow government to operate efficiently; no matter who is in power.
If you think about it, a majority government is almost identical to a dictatorship/communism. They can simply pass any bill they want. We've had a minority government for a while now, which is good since there is accountability, but now we see that nothing gets done. So what is the solution? The system itself is inefficient..
How will it be better if we will have a republic. We will still have the current system. The only diffrence will be that we will have a PARTIAL president, who will be appointed by the government of the day, like any other Commonwealth republics, like India and so on! And our laws be not be in the Queen's name, nor courts will act in name of the Queen (or as they say REGINA), MPs and new citizens in this country will not swear loyalty to the Queen and country.....
...Her portraits will be removed from embassies and other government buildings, schools, hospitals, our money, throne speech will be renamed as president speech so and so forth!
And the current powers of the Crown will be passed to the president, who will be appointed by the gov't of the day rather than people! Because if you think about it, if majority of Canadians don't vote for PM, why would they vote for ceremonial president? So, what's the difference?
@324wilson So you wipe out a massive portion of our country's history, you install an un-elected Head of State, and considering Canadians don't pay taxes towards the Monarchy and only partly pay for the royals trips to Canada, we'll now have to cover the expenses of a National Head of State including air fare, salary, housing, ceremonies, not to mention all the money it will cost to replace all the portraits, the money, the crests etc etc. Sounds like a great idea.
@Cnd1867 Couldn't agree more! Republicans claim that until we cannot become a republic, we can never actually be "mature." Well, I am sorry... we are mature. Mature people accept and indeed respect their history and glorious traditions. They accept the fact that our system may not be the perfect but it is indeed better than most countries.
As we have seen from last two royal visits that great many ordinary people (not media elites) support the monarchy.
God I hate Canada. Why the fuck do you lot copy England. how about you call your parliament something other than the same name the British use.

Just look at Germany's president, purely ceremonial, and he does the same job as the Queen. Being British it makes me proud to be so close to Canada

I haven't watched parlimentry debate for years now, but I remember that they were just calling each other assholes.
"I believe that the honorable member has no gonads and is full of excretement...Mr. Speaker"
They rarely talked about stuff of substance. It was just a pissing contest.

How do you know you'll get a better balance of power though?
The US is a Republic and at the moment resembles something more akin to a one party state.

Republics are functionally the same, except there's a figurehead at the top of the heap who can pass things without meaningful oversight.
