Minnah never banned in Taiwan, I speak Minnah in everyday life. It is not allowed to speak any other language at school, except Mandarin. There are three main languages in Taiwan: Minnah, Hakka, and Mandarin.
Taiwanese is a language - it's sometimes also called Minnan or Hokkien. It was banned for fifty years on Taiwan. This song is in Mandarin but it's about Taiwan.
The lyrics is actually in Mandarin.. but the song is quintessential "Taiwanese". The history is rather complicated. But as a Taiwanese American (and yes, my grandparents came from China in '49, but I still consider my heritage as Taiwanese). I am just happy to hear this beautiful song.
@FairyofCritics You are wrong. Taiwanese is a language. Don't try to argue with me. I am from Taiwan, and yes it is separated into two sub languages, just as vlinchong explains. And yes no language is banned in schools. You get to speak whatever you want, as long as you know the language.
uh... no. fyi, it's in MANDARIN. she's singing it in mandarin. the lyrics are in mandarin.
also, it's not "an old Taiwanese song" either. it's chinese, was written by chinese(a prisoner, right before he died). by this song, we remember the prisoners and their captivity
(ok, it's said that someone else may have written the song for a movie but that makes no sense to me)
yes, Green Island is place in taiwan, but that alone doesn't make this a taiwanese song.
@lilvazi Vienna Teng's website helpfully posts the lyrics and a rough translation (as she says, much is lost in the conversion). search for vienna teng green island serenade on google, and click the link for her website's scrapbook section.
@daughterrevolution Cantonese is beautiful. I just wish I could understand it. It seems like half the songs I like in Chinese are spoken in Cantonese...
ironically, this serenade brings more serenity to me in reflection to its political polarization underlined; it becomes more insightful, ...contrast is cool though~^^~
the description to this video is wrong. dead wrong. Song is sung in Mandarin. Taiwanese is not a language, but a spoken dialect. and since Vienna obviously sang it in MANDARIN, the description is wrong. dead wrong. Unification FTW.

shut your mouf fool. Taiwan was, is, and always will be part of China. America is run by fascist nazi corporations. America is going to be in big trouble in the next two years as the dollar collapses, and I will go to China to seek my riches and wealth after I graduate from business school next year. Mark my words.
Could you guys please stop arguing? I would really like it if you would stop. People have their oppinions on things but it isn't our place to correct them.
MrZack888, you are quite wrong. DaiSatDarKra is correct in the video description. While it is true that the song is sung in Mandarin, this song is from Taiwan and it is about Taiwan. Perhaps you are too young to sense the double meaning behind this song. The Green Island in the lyrics refers to Taiwan. Try to interpret each word in the song as if you are in exile from your home land and you are far away from your love.
I was only talking about the technical description of what spoken language the song was sung in, and not it's historical context meaning. I don't need your damn lecture of it's origins.
What I love most about Vienna is how her voice and tone alone are completely able to carry the mood and idea of the song. It's really shown here as I haven't got the faintest clue what the words mean, but her voice makes it sound so tender, I'm completely in love. :)
I don't speak Mandarin and I've never read the translated version of this song, but I cry when I hear it. No shame.

This song is so relaxing. It's about a island in Taiwan called lu dao in Chinese. I want to go there! ;)
My stomach was jumping around before I listened to this, but now I feel much calmer after only listening to about 2 minutes of it.
