  • I don't speak Mandarin and I've never read the translated version of this song, but I cry when I hear it. No shame.

  • @Proseia Music is a universal language. Even if the lyrics are not understood by one, the emotions, the notes, the music itself speaks on its own. There shouldn't be any shame as it doesn't matter if we, or one, can understand the lyrics. Music is everywhere. Music is everyone's language.

  • It's in CHINESE there is a difference between taiwanese and chinese

  • @MrSuperduperpatrick

Chinese doctrine with western culture is call Taiwanese.

  • So beautiful and relaxing X) I can litsen to it all day

  • This song is so relaxing. It's about a island in Taiwan called lu dao in Chinese. I want to go there! ;)

My stomach was jumping around before I listened to this, but now I feel much calmer after only listening to about 2 minutes of it.

  • Of all the patriotic songs about Tawian I like this the most~~

  • zhe lü dao xiang yi zhi chuan, zai yue ye li yao ya yao. gu niang ya, ni ye zai wo de xin hai li piao ya piao. rang wo de ge sheng sui na wei feng, chui kai le ni de chuang lian. rang wo de zhong qing sui na liu shui, bu duan de xiang ni qing su. ye zi shu de chang ying yan bu zhu wo de qing yi; ming mei de yue guang geng zhao liang le wo de xin. zhe lü dao de ye yi jing zhe yang de chen jing — gu niang ya, ni wei shen ma hai shi muo muo wu yü?
  • Amazing how many people understand this song! (I do!)

  • This does not sound easy to sing.. she does amazing XD

  • @SinginSarahB Cause it's in Mandarin!

  • Minnah never banned in Taiwan, I speak Minnah in everyday life. It is not allowed to speak any other language at school, except Mandarin. There are three main languages in Taiwan: Minnah, Hakka, and Mandarin.

  • Taiwanese is a language - it's sometimes also called Minnan or Hokkien. It was banned for fifty years on Taiwan. This song is in Mandarin but it's about Taiwan.

  • The lyrics is actually in Mandarin.. but the song is quintessential "Taiwanese". The history is rather complicated. But as a Taiwanese American (and yes, my grandparents came from China in '49, but I still consider my heritage as Taiwanese). I am just happy to hear this beautiful song.

  • I wonder if she would sing more songs in Mandarin? This one is simply beautiful.<3

And yeah, "Taiwanese" is not a language. .___.

  • @FairyofCritics Yeah, I love this one!!

  • @FairyofCritics You are wrong. Taiwanese is a language. Don't try to argue with me. I am from Taiwan, and yes it is separated into two sub languages, just as vlinchong explains. And yes no language is banned in schools. You get to speak whatever you want, as long as you know the language.

  • @jimmy2027209 o___o I would not argue with you. Thank you for setting me straight. These would be the languages spoken by the Aboriginal Taiwanese?

  • @FairyofCritics Yes!!! Thanks!!!

  • wow nice song

    love it

  • it's in mandarin, not taiwanese :P but beautiful nonetheless

  • Something about a boat, that's all i get without help. 2:32 is nice

  • I don't even speak the language and I still think it sounds beautiful. Vienna has such a lovely voice.

  • Beautiful and enchanting, great job

  • I really don't want to be racist, but I HAVE to say this: Ni hao. ^_^'

  • @ninabigoloni Hehe, the lullaby is Chinese, but this one is in Taiwanese. And Ni Hao to you too. ^____^

  • @ninabigoloni

Sorry for asking silly questions, but what does "Ni Hao" mean?

  • @bogyocska14 it's okay. Ni hao means hi. :)

  • @ninabigoloni

    thank you very much! ^^

  • I want to learn this so I can sing it to my kids when I have them. . .

  • i know people who read my previous comment will disagree. but really, for the record, it's a chinese song, sung in mandarin.

  • "it's a Chinese Lullabye

    In Taiwanese"

uh... no. fyi, it's in MANDARIN. she's singing it in mandarin. the lyrics are in mandarin.

also, it's not "an old Taiwanese song" either. it's chinese, was written by chinese(a prisoner, right before he died). by this song, we remember the prisoners and their captivity

(ok, it's said that someone else may have written the song for a movie but that makes no sense to me)

yes, Green Island is place in taiwan, but that alone doesn't make this a taiwanese song.

  • Really nice... the song and the pics ^^

  • What a beautiful song...

  • its so beautiful, i love this.

  • Is it possible for me to get the english translation for this song?

  • @lilvazi Vienna Teng's website helpfully posts the lyrics and a rough translation (as she says, much is lost in the conversion). search for vienna teng green island serenade on google, and click the link for her website's scrapbook section.

  • so warm and tender voice and music making my heart tranquil floating in a sweet dream.

  • Mandarin is beautiful but I think Cantonese is even prettier. It has a lyrical quality to it that's particularly suited for films and music.

  • @daughterrevolution Cantonese is beautiful. I just wish I could understand it. It seems like half the songs I like in Chinese are spoken in Cantonese...

  • Recently just got back to listening to Vienna again, and it's definitely worth it :) thanks for posting, beautiful images too

  • sweet melody, thank you for posting.

  • It is a beautiful song, but it is actually in mandarin, not taiwanese. But it is a great folk song from Taiwan :)

  • Thanks for the up DaiSatDarKra!

Lafeyel ... the song is beautiful without lyrics but understanding the words makes Vienna's song more compleet or perfect.

    Thanks for the 2 translations!!!

  • Vienna sing so beautifully, sent it to my son, he's visiting Taiwan now...like to think that after listening to this soothing classic

  • This is soooooo pretty!

  • very clam voice, plain beauty.

ironically, this serenade brings more serenity to me in reflection to its political polarization underlined; it becomes more insightful, ...contrast is cool though~^^~

  • It's really classless to have a silly argument in the comments section of a video like this. DaiSatDarKra, thanks for posting this beautiful song!

  • How about this not to be mean but just enjoy the music and stop debating about something that doesn't really matter.

  • Green Island is a small island about 33 km east of Taiwan in the Pacific Ocean. Please Google.

  • I thought Taiwan was a part of China? x-x

  • Wow, this is beautiful.

Gods I love this woman. All of her music is breath-taking, poetic, and moving.

    Just lovely.

  • the description to this video is wrong. dead wrong. Song is sung in Mandarin. Taiwanese is not a language, but a spoken dialect. and since Vienna obviously sang it in MANDARIN, the description is wrong. dead wrong. Unification FTW.

  • Could you guys please stop arguing? I would really like it if you would stop. People have their oppinions on things but it isn't our place to correct them.

    Thank you.

    -Izumi

  • Please can you two keep your arguing off this video comments section? I would really like it if you stop it. If you HAVE to argue message each other.

    Thank you.

    -Izumi

  • @DaiSatDarKra As the owner of the channel, you can simply remove all unwanted comments.

  • MrZack888, you are quite wrong. DaiSatDarKra is correct in the video description. While it is true that the song is sung in Mandarin, this song is from Taiwan and it is about Taiwan. Perhaps you are too young to sense the double meaning behind this song. The Green Island in the lyrics refers to Taiwan. Try to interpret each word in the song as if you are in exile from your home land and you are far away from your love.

  • Omg thanks. This is an amazing song. Now I know why she created a climax at 0:34

  • This is....just beautiful.

I definitely know what CD's i'm buying next time I go shopping. ^^

  • Stunning! A love this cover :3

  • "Tears flowing, yearning, never able to take hold". That is how I feel every time I listen to this song. Truly Hauntingly Beautiful.

  • What I love most about Vienna is how her voice and tone alone are completely able to carry the mood and idea of the song. It's really shown here as I haven't got the faintest clue what the words mean, but her voice makes it sound so tender, I'm completely in love. :)

  • thats wonderful her voice sent shivers up my spine! brava! <3

  • totally agree!

  • dude ... the lady has a gorgeous knock out voice

    she should sing .....so sweetly

  • it's so sweet...

  • beautiful cover, just simply beautiful...
