I don't know if ethanol, produced in meaningful quantities and without the tax breaks agribusiness receives "is 1/3rd cheaper than gasoline," but even if it is, you gain nothing because, gallon for gallon, ethanol has about 1/3rd less energy than gasoline.

In other words, if a full tank of octane AKA "gasoline" takes your flex-fuel vehicle 300 miles, that same vehicle will only travel 200 miles before it runs out of gas -- err, make that ethanol.
