The first known FPS was 1974's Maze War. But the genre didn't become mainstream until 1992's release of Wolfenstein 3D. Half-Life was released six years later, making not even close to being one of the first FPSes. Although you're more than welcome to find Half-Life boring, your reasoning is unsound. Half-Life is an evolution of a genre that in the past years had only been advancing technically. The end result is a game that not everyone will enjoy, but people should at least respect.
