These chickens have a better life in a backyard in someone's home. Chickens arn't that hard nor expensive to maintain, so why do they cut corners so much to make these animals suffer?

After all, one egg layed by a chicken in a back yard means one less eggs sold from factory farms.

Actually, Oprah was promoting nonhuman exploitation and violence -- sugarcoated animal farming. If she really cared, she would have stayed vegan, and not promoted "humane" animal farming/slaughter, which is an oxymoron. The problem is not how we use nonhumans. It's the usage in itself -- treating sentient beings like things, means to our ends. Welfare reforms don't work because the animals at the end of the day, are still viewed as commodities. There can never be justice in that. Go vegan.

But just becoming a vegetarian isn't enough. I am A vegetarian, but I've signed up for petitions, and have written letters with collaborating groups, but still it is not enough.

More people need to become aware, and once millions know and try to stop the slaughters, then it might be enough. This goes not only for chickens, but cows, horses, snakes, a huge line up of animals.

Then controversy over humans and how people are treated comes in...it's just complicated.

Wow. I'm all against animal cruelty and stuff, but look at the DATE. That was more than TEN YEARS ago, there are more rules and regulations now. Sure, some aren't 'perfect' but the civilization will fix that.

When nonhuman beings are no longer exploited and killed, and are recognized as members within the moral community, when the farms, animal laboratories, circuses, and slaughterhouses are gone, we can find alternative sources of manure (hint: humans poop). Currently, humans are privileged in our speciesist society, including vegans. If a water plant was run by child slavery, should opponents dehydrate themselves to death to fight it? No. You strike at the roots.

Manure-grown vegetables aren't creating a demand for nonhuman exploitation/slaughter, all that isn't happening because people buy some tomatoes fertilized with nonhuman manure. It is a by-product of the root problem, which is the exploitation and killing of nonhuman beings for food. Funnily enough, animals can't poop if they don't exist, and they don't exist if they aren't forcible bred.
