@doggys235 La diferencia entre Patti LuPone y Elena Roger es que Elena siendo argentina expresa mucho más en esta canción con su voz que cualquier otra cantante extranjera
I've seen the show with Elena in Londen and it was wonderfull. I hope the dutch one this year is wonderfull too. But I'm sure it will be, because of our Evita: Brigitte Heitzer. Love her voice!
The best two Evitas l saw on stage are Buenos Aires born Valeria Lynch back in ´81 and now Elena Roger. Both glowed with star quality and gave the musical Argentinean flavour.
It took a lot of listening to Elena Roger to get used to it. I remain a huge fan of the performances by Patti LuPone (original US), Elaine Page (original London), and Paloma San Basilio (original Madrid in Spanish language). Patti LuPone is my all time favorite, but Elena is beginning to grow on me. She's cute in "Buenos Aires." Her dancing is OUTSTANDING.
If you haven't heard Elena Roger sing "You Must Love Me," (originally written for the film, now added to the 2006 rivival show and cast album) I suggest you do so. Especially for all of you who say Elena is a stolid actress that hardly shows emotion. Listen to this song, and you can hear her on the verge of tears, trying to keep composure. I cried the first time I heard it, and that's speaking volumes for me.
You r right, I've never seen Evita on stage. But Madonna shows so much emotion, that it appears that she became evita herself. that's why I love it, and her.
Madonna played the role nicely. But its clear you've never seen this performed on stage. Its one thing to love Madonna (which I do), but its another to accept that some people perform this role better, Elena Roger included. However, my hat is off to Patti LuPone (English version) and Paloma San Basilio (Spanish).
Everyone has their own interpretation of what is beautiful. What moves you, and what leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Theater is a form of art. If I asked everyone to bring back a piece of art, I doubt everyone would bring back the same work. Yes, you can have your opinions, but remember WHY they are doing this.
What made him think West End, English audiences would want to see a show about a figure who had little, if any, influence over their lives? What would they care about a woman who lived thousands of miles and cultures and languages away, and who perished two decades before? I think you're missing the point. Don't criticize these actresses' performances...and don't necessarily praise them either.
Listen to all of you... Have you forgotten, or have you ever first realized and thought about WHY Andrew Lloyd Webber (and others) decided to write a musical on the life of Eva Peron? (How ever loosely, and with whatever liberties.)
Please don't tell me she actually did this in a professional production in the U.S. I know plenty of lay women whose voices outdo this woman effortlessly.
I didnt know the show was finishing, the first thing me and my friend said after leaving the theatre is 'this show is going to die if they dont re-cast Eva Peron' They made mistake casting an unknown to open the show,
transtastic -- Both Elaine Paige and Patti LuPone were unknown when they opened this same show in London and New York respectively. transtastic -- Both Elaine Paige and Patti LuPone were unknown when they opened this same show in London and New York respectively. Thankfully, the casting directors made the decision to hire them. Look at them and all the contributions they have made to the theatre now.
well thats what the rumour amongst west end theatres, its not doing much buisness,i think that it is too short this time, its only around 105 minutes including the interval, then again one of the most famous shows in town (wicked) is also doing really badly and there is talk that it too may close
Well, look... that is exactly the opposite to the information I have, from sources who are extremely close to the show. But I will confirm this for you as soon as I can...
well... musicals are not often more than that, don't you think so? It's almost a cheap version of an opera, something like a "sub" genre, more superficial and with more gay people involved (and don't tell me I am homophobic because of this comment, please).
With all due respect to Adriverdolaga, the theater profession has always been advanced heavily by members of the gay community, regardless of the style. If you see otherwise, you're not around the actors enough.
Furthermore, the term "opera" does not refer to a single style of music. The definition of an opera means that the entire story is told in music. This means EVITA, as well as Jesus Christ Superstar, are operas. They are just different forms of it.
Yes, I do agree, but the musicals should have the highest percent of memebers of the gay community, without any doubt. I can tell you this because I know a couple of actresses working at musicals who often complain about the "difficulties" of finding a boyfriend in the theatre they work all day long...
Well, I stopped performing in 1997. My last production was Jesus Christ Superstar when I played Pilate and was an alternate for Jesus. All other productions I've been in were plays with dialogue. Far over half of the men in every cast I've been in were gay. I was a pretty rare. My other experience has only been in community theater. So perhaps my view is a bit skewed. I stopped in 1997 because I decided to pursue a career in Law.
Elena Roger is amazing, I've seen her perform 3 times in London. Well done to her on children in need too! To the other people Madonna must be one of the worst people to sing Evita ever!!
MillarAndrew I completely agree with you, and I've seen the show too...imverge you dont know what u are chatting about, just because madonna sells records galore doesnt mean she can sing. I have to admit that her overall perfomance in the movie was good, but Elena is in a different league.
Transtastic, its funy how you pick on elenas accent, i think theres a bit of xenophobia there! ironically enough im pretty sure you are not even english and that you are accent is stronger than Elenas. She is a charimastic actress and a talented singer. however I do agree with you when you say she shouts too much at times, but then again so does patti lupone. and if we are going to compare the two, well, i must say elena is by far a better dancer and a better actress
my comments on elena is simply my opinion and as i have said already anyone who hasent seen the show should see it and judge for themselves, my comparison between patti lupone and elena roger is 'vocal' regarding the song dont cry for me argentina. Elena rodger version was very 'cold' and flat, me and my friend looked at each other in
nicoh81 -- I completely agree that Elena is a much better dancer than LuPone, and they are both amazing singers. In terms of acting, though, that's just not true. I did not see LuPone play Evita, I wasn't born yet when she did, but I have seen her in several plays and musicals and I really must insist that she is a phenomenal actress. If you have seen her live and disagree, I cannot argue opinions, but if you have not seen her live, you may just love her if you do!
I regret that Julie Covington never played Eva Peron on stage. She has wonderful high and piercing voice similar to the real voice of actual Eva Peron.
Did she? Anyway, the musical has little or nothing to do with the real Eva Perón. It is not even an anti-peronist vision of the full thing, but it is full of fictions, like the moment when the character of Evita destroys the envelopes with the votes while singing and dancing, the permanent insinuation of her being a prostitute and the impoverishment of the Argentinian public finances after the "waste of money" supposedely impulsed by Evita.
All of that, on top of the use of samba and rumba as Argentinian music, made me laugh a lot about the ignorance of the authors, but I should have cried instead...
from your fellow argentinian: you are clearly a peronist - only a peronist would deny that Evita was a whore. Anyway, I think she did try to help the people, but because she had no education or intelligence she failed to actually make a difference. Dont tell me you make a difference by giving away a few pair of trainers in a poor village. Again, she had good intentions, UNLIKE HER HUSBAND, A REAL CUNT HIJO DE PUTA TRAITOR
Your comment made me clear that you don't have the faintest idea about Argentinian history. Where did you learn that Evita used to give away pair of trainers when she went to the poor villages? Is that the idea you have from peronism? That's what is really and utterly poor and biased. Before Peron, absolutely all the manufactured goods (except most related to food and wine) were imported from the UK, USA and Europe... but with Peron and Evita, the business was suddenly over.
There is clip on here of patti lupone singing 'dont cry for me argentina' for me there is no compasrison between elena roger and patti lupone , patti has a great range and quality to her voice, and i wish id seen her as eva peron.
I certianly DID see the show with elena roger, yes the language absolutley made the show more interesting ,but i honestly on occasion could not understand her, her accent is very strong and she obviously has to work hard at her diction,
i found her voice/singing a bit mono-tone, a bit too much shouting.
If it it was an argentinian production in 'spanish' im sure she would be fantastic.
for anyone who hasent seen the show go see it, i hope you enjoy.
Well, it is your opinion, and I respect it. But I still think that the influence of the accent is important... or do you think that when the rest of the cast sings "Santa Evita" they actually pronounce it in an acceptable way? As a native Spanish speaker, I can tell you they are not even close to sing in an understable Spanish, specially when thet TRY to say the word "descamisados".
yes i think you are right, i did think the rest of the cast sang 'santa evita ' perfectly fine, so i guess its just what we are used to hearing, you know us english are lazy sods sometimes and i guess that goes for our ears aswell ..lol
I think the matter of the language makes the musical much more interesting, and, of course, much more authentic. Don't tell me that Elaine Page or Patti Lupone could even be compared with Elena's outstanding performance... they did not understand the culture that surrounded Evita, and her peculiar background. Could you just imagine an Argentinian actress starring a musical centered on Elisabeth I, II or Margaret Thatcher??? I don't... well, unless that role would be played by Elena Roger.
I don't know which musical you watched, transtastic, but it seems it was NOT the one starred by Elena Roger. For me, and for absolutely all the people who saw it, there is a biiiig gap between her performance and the rest of the cast, even when they are quite good.
I saw the show 2 weeks ago , for me and my friend who has seen many Evita Produtions, we agreed that a disappointing performance by Elena Rodger, epecially Dont cry for me Argentina 'the show stopper' it was just flat.
She puts alot of effort into the performance but there is just something missing,English is good but not her first language and was a little distracting, maybe this was the problem.though i did enjoy
I think,so far, that Elaine Paige,Elena Rogers and Patti Lupone are the best Evitas.Madonna's fine, but it's a very diluted kinda feeling i get when she performs in the movie...
issy999, Eva is not dying in this scene. She is addressing the crowd at Peron's first inauguration. In the show "cry" has a double meaning. In this instance, "Don't cry for me" means "Don't shout/call for me." Just prior to her balcony appearance, the crowd had been crying/shouting/calling her name. When the song is reprised later in the show ("Eva's Final Broadcast"), "cry" then means "weep."
I saw Elena Roger in Evita in London this past july, and she was absolutely amazing. So much better than madonna could ever be. I got to meet her after the show and she is like 5 ft tall lol. Such a nice person...and not only a great voice, amazing dancer!
She`s Argentinian and has a long career in musicals.....she starred in Les Miserable, Beauty & the Beast, Mina...Che cosa Sei?!?!; Dracula; El Jorobado de París, Fiddler On the Roof, etc.
THIS EVA ELENA RODGER IS NOT FROM ARGENTINA SHES FROM LONDON IT HAS BEEN REPORTED ALW IS HOPING TO HAVE HER DO EVITA WHEN IT REOPENS ON BROADWAY IN 2008
