  • Look at this video ... Stewart Lee - Performance at Pestival.

It's here on youtube, and of course, very good.

All hail Stewart Lee king of the Sardines.

  • Stewart Lee - Brilliant intelligent comedian. His DVD's are hilarious. Best comedian in the UK by a long way.

  • It's like Stewart is fucking with his mum's head, and then he's telling the story to fuck with the audience's head, and finally he imagines himself as a godlike figure fucking with Tom O'Connor's head.

  • i didnt get some of this i feel bloody stupid but i was laughing so hard at the bits i did get

  • @guitarreilly Are you a sardine?

  • @lovelyjubbaly no but i am in oil

  • @guitarreilly do you use that answer to every question asked on a daily basis?

  • i was eating a sandwich during the 'he flew at him like a wolf' bit, and i did choke from laughing.

  • @Narcofunk No, that was you entertaining your Uncle

  • @Narcofunk Seriously? I was laughing non-stop through the whole sardine bit till my stomach literally hurt.

  • @Menegoth I love the guy(the stand up about Joe Pasquale being my favourite) but i think this one is weak for his standards.

  • @Narcofunk Well I obviously disagree.

  • @Narcofunk you dont get it !

  • I liked the part where he came out Stew...

  • "What am I?" ahahahahahhahahaha

  • He's quick Stew, he's like lightning coming out of a.. dish

  • Tom o'connor likes to come in prositutes.

He tried to buy one girl for a £1000 but instead the pimp from the Wirral offered him a season ticket for 2grand.

As an ex teacher he would spank her when she got questions wrong and give her sweets when she got the questions right.

  • Or brine.

  • He could have made that work stu, tom o'connor could have done stu: cause he's quick like Zephyrus the wind

  • Are you a sardine???

  • the four dislikes of this video came from:

    1. Stewart Lee's Mum

    2. Tom O'Connor

    3. an Oil based Sardine

    4. a Tomato Sauce based Sardine

  • @shanoonadong Del Boy didn't like it either.

  • @jabjabmove

no OPINION on it either way, having not seen it.

  • @jabjabmove

unless the OPINION in question is that of someone who is utterly wrong.

  • @jabjabmove

really wide of the mark there kid.

  • How to stretch two minutes of material out for ten...

  • There's not many comedians that could pull this off...lol.

  • Beautiful

  • @jabjabmove: I prefer to think of myself as a fan. Therefore the feeling I have for Stewart Lee is more accurately described as 'fanaticism'.

I guess what I'm trying to say is: Death to all enemies of Stewart Lee.

  • When he does the voice of the Spanish sardine Stew sounds EXACTLY like Bjork in Dancer in the Dark

  • "Tom O'Connor was approached by a small oily fish."

    I cried from laughing.

  • "yes, I have remembered it wrong Stu"

  • "the tedious grinding repetition will take the illusion of genius" Class, No one comes close to Stewart Lee

  • @libertinesnr Ah yes, it seems so obvious now! Thanks!

  • You can prove anything with facts can't you Stew?

  • Yes, I grasp the subtext concept. Irritating is irritating whether he is trying to make a point or not. He has a habit of winding the crowd up at times and I just don't think it's always necessary. His Del Boy rant was a rare occasion in which his repitition actually enhanced the gag. I bought his most recent publication if that's what you're referring to. The trashiest works released under Faber and Faber. His own words. It was very good.

  • @RanpatMcMurphy I've just finished the book (How I Escaped My Certain Fate); there is one part of his routine (not necessarily this part) about which Lee admits he feels ashamed for being deliberately tedious, that now - as a parent - he thinks that making something that is intended to irritate people who have gone to the effort of attending a gig is not something that he would now do. I found it incredibly interesting to see the thought processes that go into such a complex act.

  • @andrewdlowery I remember this. He was talking about how difficult it was to engineer a night out if you had kids. Hiring babysitters etc. Who would have thought he would care about such things. He's a big softie really.

  • @RanpatMcMurphy Part of growing up I guess. I was also shocked to read how close to the breadline he has lived for large portions of his life. You assume someone with national fame (infamy?) and such obvious talent is set for life. To hear about him living on sofas, sharing £30 fees for shows with Herring, came as quite a surprise. I've decided to buy his latest DVD to show my support financially.

  • His repitition techniques can be very irritating at times. He can be very creative though.

  • @RanpatMcMurphy 'there is a subtext there' :-)

  • @RanpatMcMurphy That's the "subtext" to his slow monotomous comment about Tom O' Connor repeating the sardine phrase.

I highly recommend his new book actually -it's interesting to see the insipration for his jokes and his style of delivery.

  • "it's not waged no... it's voluntary."

  • 4 people are Tom O'Connor

  • As slow as Del Boy.... falling through the bar...

    and trigger made a face

  • like lightning coming out of a dish.

  • Who else here looked up Tom O'Connor on wikipedia?

  • Eh, it got pretty slow, even for Lee

  • do you think he genuinely remembered it wrong?

  • @12345l6789 Not a chance!

  • @JimmyStrident I know I know, I was being flippant.

In his book he explains it.

  • @12345l6789 He was saying how his mum remembered it wrong, which to me was showing how some people aren't really fit to judge what they have opinions on.

  • ...And simple, grinding, tedious repetition, will take on the illusion of genius.... Stewart Lee elevates comedy to a literative art form, his material is a self aware cyclical exegesis... and you cant say that about Jim Davidson.

  • @balthazaa2001

Yes but Jim Davidson falls at the first hurdle of 'civilised human being'. We'll ask him to be funny once he progresses past an early stage of development, that even Frankie Boyle has achieved.

  • He come out Stu....love it!!

  • Are you a sardine...

  • No wonder Stewart is p*ssed off. If its a true story. 'He's a comic, like YOU Stu' Mothers eh?!

  • Stewart Lee doing silly voices!

  • lol a sardine. haha its funny because the other guy said he was IN oil. haha. so funny. this is great. so witty. this is funny

  • And Tom O'Connor was approached by a small, oily fish.

I nearly wet myself the first time I watched this.

  • I should never have doubted Tom.

  • The sardine sounds like the albanian boy from Albie the racist dragon

  • @fsandt

    Bloody hell, it does.

  • "And yes, there is a subtext there..."

    ....

    ?

    ...

    AAAhhhhaahahahahahaha!

  • I read this and didnt get it until the exact same thing happened to me lmao

  • @flankspeed Whats the subtext?

  • @rag2gar: As a guy just also posted: "the tedious grinding repetition will take the illusion of genius". And where else can you spot some grinding repetition...? "He's come out Stu ... Tom O'Connor, etc". You get the picture...

  • What an absolute genius! I was pissing myself laughing!

  • My Grandma was in a panto with Tom O'connor....

  • Don't touch those bits of felt they're cut into the shapes of lions....for a jungle scene....it's not just gonna....He came out Stew- Tom O'Connor!- Funniest bit ever.

  • he could have made that work, Stew.

  • surely he should have said tom o'cconnor was caught with a teenage girk working as a prostitute as opposed to got caught with a prostitute

  • Hahaha.

    Sharp.

  • The mum character is a lot like Richard Herring. Such a great double act, far greater than anything around today.

  • What the fuck is going on?!

    Youtube is full of idiots

  • lol

  • Hanged until dead, as opposed to hanged until perturbed?

Your a funny guy, presumably also a master of demographic, as you've decided it a good idea to make that remark on a video containing a performance BY Stewart Lee, Watched mainly by people who enjoy his comedy, and of course gluttons for punishment who browse youtube looking for things they would not enjoy to watch.

  • 1. Point by point breakdowns won't really convince me this video isn't funny as I clearly enjoyed it.

    2. Efficiency seems like a bit of a stupid point to argue when talking about stand up comedy

  • Jim Davidson and Stewart Lee are completely incomparable. Stewart Lee provides us with slow-placed intelligent satire and witty observations. Thats why we like him and that's why we watch him. GTFO of videos you don't enjoy watching

  • I completely agree.

  • And Jim Davidson is just a racist cunt?

  • lets be fair here, he's a cunt in all departments

  • That's part of the joke, it's what makes it funny. He's reciting his nan, and like most old people she probably takes 10 minutes to tell a story that lasts only 30 seconds. Mainly because they are preoccupied with telling the kids to stop playing with things. Like the quilt in this story for example.

  • All comics do that.

  • dude, thats part of why its funny. u american?

  • When he does his mother's voice, it sounds just like Histor, Sky TV's one eyed time travelling pirate history crow!

  • Sky TV's one egged time travelling pirate nestory crow?

  • Yes, that would be the one.

  • @BrassVaz EGG HE SAID EGG!!!!

  • @iggy35 I have feather bird egg tit.

  • Stewart Lee is the definition of making unfunny stuff funny

  • "He come out, Stew..."

  • @orkisz85 don't touch the quillows, Stew

  • If you kenw what he was saying, you might find it funny.

  • no matter how many times i see stewart lee its always funny

  • "There is a subtext there.." hahahaha

  • 's a great impression of Bjork, that sardine does.

  • Brilliant though I do prefer the version he does on TV (Edinburgh Stand's-Up or something) without the voices, Lee's deadpan renditions of the Sardine and his mum makes this riff for me

  • do you know which video it is?

i prefer that one also but can't find it on youtube anymore

    cheers
