  • Takes 2 days to prepare this dish.

  • Just made this last night. Deviated a bit though, I added pig's feet alongside the pork shank.. I could not resist, hope you don't mind. It tasted amazing.

  • It's a cassolette

  • We Cubans call that Caldo Gallego, Soo good!

  • there will be no skimming of the fat!

  • I HAD THIS MEAL IN WIESBADEN GERMANY A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO CALLED SCHWEINEHAXEN MIT BOHNEN AND IT WAS OUT OF THIS WORLD. IT WAS SERVED WITH THE ENTIRE SHANK BUT QUITE AS LARGE AS THIS ONE, BUT A HEARTY SIZE AND IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST MEALS I HAVE EVER EATEN.

  • Trying it tonight in Sitges, Spain ...Thanks!

  • Chef John is made of WIN

  • Chef John, you are the man.

  • 45 min from scratch..from prep time to serving

  • i make this same recipe in a pressure cooker, 45 min

  • looks good but takes time:)

  • 5 stars for all the shank jokes... lol. Can always count on you for some humour with your recipes. This looks delish!

  • If you like foods like this, you must love 'snert', traditional Dutch pea soup.

*finding out what porc shank is in Dutch, because it looks like a fine piece of pig for snert*

  • I don't know why the food always looks way way better in the pot than in the plate =P

  • U rule Chef! That looks delicious ty for the recipie im gonna try it soon!

  • Wow this looks like really amazing and pretty simple too. Too bad that you have to wait a day to eat it, I guess you could start in the morning on the weekend and have it for dinner. Thanks Chef John you do great work.

  • I made this recipe earlier this week....IT WAS AWESOME!! Even the kid liked it and she doesn't like anything!

  • The ingredients aren't posted yet :(

I'm willing to pay money for that recipe lol!

  • The shank is already cooked right?

  • no u buy it uncooked

  • looks great!

  • hey foodwishes I'm always confused on whether should remove the foam or not whenever I'm cooking some dishes that require simmering

  • Damn, this looks SO good!

And as opposed to Calambaman, my God told me to eat a lot of Pork, because it's yummy - specially with beans - specially with Chef John's recipes ;)

  • Awesome recipe, thanks for sharing it.

Good tip on removing the grease layer when it's cold.

  • Breathtaking! Now just add some crusty sourdough and escape to heaven.

  • Dude--get me slice of cornbread now!

  • Good ole DEAD PIGGY! Ummmmm... beans and dead piggy....

  • i bought the canned white kidney beans and they just go so well with pork! and also so helpful to someone like me who's anemic. :D

  • You can cut out a good hour of cooking by pressure cooking the beans first, and then adding it to this delicious broth! But I wonder if that will take away from the flavor?

  • wow...cant believe it can taste so good with so little ingredients! thank you! it's a must try!

  • I love using knobs of butter

  • ''I have 1 pound of, Well not really. 500g...''

    Lawl

  • This looks sooooo good for those chilly days we've been having!!! Really easy too! Thanks Chef John!

  • in sweden there is a similiar thing called "ärtsoppa" which pretty much is peas and pork boiled together for a long time. so good.

  • Oh, my, god.. that looks so freaking good. What's there not to love about this meal? :D

  • PORKSHANK REDEMPTION

  • Seriously, If you DO believe that to be true, then why the HELL would you watch a video recipe involving (CLEARLY stated in the title btw)...Smoked Pork Shank?

Being a Total MORON is desperately unhealthy.....And I didn't need my "God" to tell me so.

  • yea... im sure god also said dont drink water! its totally unhealthy!

  • pity i live in the UK would love to have you come cook for me lol

  • fork over those beans whitey or i'll shank ya!!

  • if only it didnt ionvolve soooooooooooooo much onion it would be great

  • Looks wonderful! Can almost smell it.

    shanks...hehehe.

  • That looks tasty!! Good one.

  • Interesting concept: People disagreeing with you doesn't mean that they're trolling. Your primitive approach and lack of logic to interpret disagreement as nothing but "trolling" is pathetic.

If anything, you're trolling because you're unable to handle someone actually thinking otherwise, and you thus choose to somehow say that it's an issue.

You are your own orbit, apparently.

  • This is where you lose eligibility to waste any more of my time.

  • Wow you are quite spiteful for a troll. How effeminate of you

  • oh mai, that gave me a nosebleed...

It's nice to see some constructive criticism every once in a while, it's what every chef needs, although you need to have some basis for that statement you have said there.

  • trotroy - Your idea of constructive criticism is way off mark.

  • shank you very much! hahaha

  • What a dish...pork shank is an extremely underused cut of meat.

  • Wow!!!
