Sometimes when a world generates the game ignores the whole sand obeys gravity thing. I once found an island of sand floating in the air with no means of support and when i destroyed one block of sand the whole thing collapsed.

The last thing you said about floating sand is interesting. The lava COULD have hit some dirt or something, it cought on fire, and it burned up. There could have been some sand over that dirt, witch then did not fall down for some reason. I don't know.
