Not just Stray Cats...Matchbox, The Jets, and lets not airbrush 'Shakey' out of history...the Great Rock 'N Roll Revival...the music of the Falklands War...
I've always found it unspeakably cool that when everything else at the time was trending toward New Wave, the Stray Cats came out with this retro look and sound. And damn good songs.
You can't understand how far out of left field this was in 81! Pomps, tattoos and rockabilly right smack dab in the middle of synths and new wave. Loved it then, love it now!
this is an example that, as far as drums go, you dont need a huge 200 piece set to make a song good. this guy is STANDING, playing a ride, snare and kick. THATS IT!!! now, the modern drummers such as Mike Portnoy, Joey Jordison, Dave Lombardo, Dave Grohl, etc. are all great, but the have ridiculously huge sets
This calls for a "flat-top" Lindy---not what those dancers are doing. Hard to describe the dance, but it evolved from swing, yet utterly lacks any "elevation" change, dips or slide-throughs on the part of the dancers. Just spins, arm weaves, skinning the cat, etc. no dips. Best done with greased ducktails, Luckies rolled up into the short sleeve shirts, cuff's on the 'Rees, "spic-top" loafers, and slim, slim belts.
wow!!!six hours ago..I just came back from doing this song at an open stage night in edmonton alberta at a place called Rust Reeds blues. Anyway, I went up as a single act to play and sing the song. I did Flipfllop and Fly, Rock this town,, and Tush by ZZtop ...any way, some blond female jumped up on the stage and totaly ruined it for me, and I know she did that on purpose and am I ever mad....Ive been craped on all my life and I can take it......BUT THEY CRAPED ON THE STRAYCATS and I'm MADD!!
@badattitude77769 LOL!!!! well, I did get alot of complements and ticket for a free beer, but I just kept it cause I already drank three. In Canada the driving limit is two cause the beer is strong. The Stray Cats were very big in the late70s -early 80s. They realy know what they,re doin.
when the great Energy crisis comes and the power increases, the techno, pop fans will loss there entire music Lady gaga will suck without auto tune the Black Eyed Peas will be nothing without voice tune.. BUT the rockabilly will keep rocking because we dont need this electric shit we can make music unplugged.
All i say is, is look how much fun they are having, compared to todays 2nd rate commercial rubbish! Long Live Rock n Roll, Rockabilly et al - and im 22 ;)
I wrote a Setzer tribute song called This Kitten is Smitten. I can't seem to put the url in as a comment, but here's the youtube extention youtube.com/watch?v=TJ3wMk8lQjQ
@1973CHEVYGIRL I saw Brian Setzer with Slim Jim Phantom this summer in France (Rockabilly Riot tour), they didn't play this song, but damn I couldn't believe seeing them for real, that close to me!! I bought the tickets the same day they were playing, driving about 30 miles an hour over the speed limit to go get that freaking pass, hoping there were still some left... They didn't play this song, but I guess I'll never forget that evening!!!
An absolutely FEROCIOUS performance ! The Cats "live" are the best ! Too bad when they played on ABC-TV's Fridays show they had to lip-synch ! NO LIP SYNCHIN' HERE ! Brian Setzer STILL kicks ass ! I saw them open for ZZ Top and the Pretenders a few years ago and they absolutely TORE THE HOUSE DOWN !
in the mid 80,s thanks to the stray cats i bought my first guitar , i slowly worked at setzers guitar parts off the lp,s i even got a 59 6120 because of brian afew years later . now ilisten to and play green day, led zep among others , in place of the gretsch is now gibson and fender, but always end up playing stray cats and it makes me feel at home.
This is music! These guys are musicians! I bet Stray Cats would rock the socks off all other artists in their live performances if they played like they did in those days!
Man, if I were a boy I would get a haircut just like Brian's! Wish that cool image came with the haircut... I'm still trying to accept that I wasn't even born at this time, but hey
if these guys ROCK youtube I can only imagine how much they rocked LIVE! Rock on!
1983: I spent $325 for a used 1967 hollowbody Guild Starfire III with a Bigsby whammy bar....just because of this song!! And I tried for years to play like Brian. Never got even close! However, Big Red, my guitar, is still with me....tuned and ready for a scream, if I dare. It's a Saturday night here, and at age 49 (exactly 3 years - 1 month younger than Brian), I may be old, I've still got some life in me yet. HMMM, wonder if tonight I should "ROCK THIS TOWN"!!!!
This is a must play song to do with your friends or in a band. Something so simple can bring a smile to the people. And screw the people who say this is "old crap", well todays music is bull crap.
@ZePpLiNs666 Amen! And when they don't use computer effects the only reason for all the twiddly bits in their singing is to cover the fact that they haven't got the "Amazing vocal talent" their record labels and A&R would have most people believe. Sadly, way too many people are stupid enough to pay for crap & it's destroyed the charts. You know it isn't just a generational thing either, when you hear so many young teens saying they prefer 80s&90s music to today's. Went on a bit there sorry lol!
@ZePpLiNs666 umm, have you heard of a little show called "Glee"? It's great example of pure musicianship! Glad there's no auto-tune nonsense th- PAHAHAHA!! Sorry, I couldn't say that with a straight face :D
