The solution on that is to have some kind of "Meta" Format which ALL Distributors use to build their packages. The problem with Linux is it's very power hungry. I already used Powertop. It does reduce the consumption of my battery but not enough. So i removed ubuntu on my laptop and used Windows again. However Linux is a good OS though. But they have to improve their drivers.I will be going back to Linux if they have fixed the energy consumption.I miss Linux's terminal :))

@tboybmx Not Linux that is buggy. It is the apps. If you only use your OS for browsing, you can get a perfect experiense, cause Chrome is practically bug free on Linux. But you want to do anything else, there mostly are only buggy programs.

To install any drivers or apps like Thunderbird or something else linux makes it real hard...unless you have a degree in C++ or some programing you will always run into problems and have a hard time. On a positive note when you install a linux OS like Ubuntu (which I have 11.04) it's a very refreshing experience but as to being user friendly it has a lot more work to do especially fixing all the bugs.

I am new to Linux (a year now) and I don't care if the software costs money. Why not use that SoftwareCenter that they have been talking about as appstore, because this is just so logical to do.
BTW: The big problem IS like you say, there are too many installationssteps on too many distros. If they do not fix that and standardize it, desktop Linux will never make it outside a small group of people. It will not affect me and the way I use it, but for example my mother will never get to know it.

Are you using Ubuntu? The new kernels, starting from 2.6.37 are power hungry.
Try Debian which runs 2.6.32. Yeah, its softwares are old, outdated a little bit, but it's stable as hell.
Debian now has GUI for installation. Have fun.

@tboybmx Not Linux that is buggy. It is the apps. If you only use your OS for browsing, you can get a perfect experiense, cause Chrome is practically bug free on Linux. But you want to do anything else, there mostly are only buggy programs.

@htmlmm <~~~I can also use windows just for browsing and be bug free...what's your point? To install any drivers or apps like Thunderbird or something else linux makes it real hard...unless you have a degree in C++ or some programing you will always run into problems and have a hard time. On a positive note when you install a linux OS like Ubuntu (which I have 11.04) it's a very refreshing experience but as to being user friendly it has a lot more work to do especially fixing all the bugs.

@tboybmx In some aspect, Linux has a better security model than Windows. That is just the way it is. But since it is also free, I do not see any reason why to use Windows, if it's just for surfing. The experiense is the same, be it Chrome on Linux or Chrome on Windows.
Lots of programs are buggy for Linux, you are right, but usually not if they are from Mozilla or Google. Or Canonical :)

Macintosh OSX got hacked many times via EXPLOIT in FLASH PLAYER, just by accessing the crafted SWF with target machine and bing ... root access! This is why Jobs wants to kill FLASH.
And on Windows? Ahaha! Same failures - same exploits - same effect. On Linux at least flash player does not give attacker root and there is opensource flash decoder.

I am new to Linux (a year now) and I don't care if the software costs money. Why not use that SoftwareCenter that they have been talking about as appstore, because this is just so logical to do.
BTW: The big problem IS like you say, there are too many installationssteps on too many distros. If they do not fix that and standardize it, desktop Linux will never make it outside a small group of people. It will not affect me and the way I use it, but for example my mother will never get to know it.

if that woman was the maintainer of a complete lab and she was doing something every month manually (and she had to because she didn't use the accompanied drivers and made the usual mistake of installing drivers yourself ala windows) then what the hell was she doing? She could've googled and come up with a DKMS solution. Or she could've just NOT use the manually installed nvidia driver and/or disable automatic update so there would be no surprises.

@yobito Nah, the reason people think Linux is better is because they haven't actually used Windows in the last decade. Yes, modern Linux desktop is better than Windows 98. But NO ONE USES WINDOWS 98 ANYMORE. Windows 7 is light years better than Linux, and anyone who's used both knows it. There is nothing better about Linux except that it's "free". If Windows were made open source, Linux would die overnight, because it's just a copycat OS with no innovation or technological advantages.

@eyescreamcake Gnome 3 isn't a copycat any-other OS , and I like it just the way it is. One way it is actually better is as I said there are almost no viruses for Linux at all. The Compiz effects are not really a clone of any OS . Another way Linux is better is it can run off a live CD , and that is great for file recovery something Windows just can't really do .
As far as the Mac OS it started as a clone of NeXTSTEP / OpenStep . So the Linux Mac theme is a clone of a clone .

Almost half of the 20,000 employees of Google use Goobuntu Linux.
They are not really sure how many Linux users there are it's very difficult to get number , because some people just download a Linux distribution and run it off a live CD, or virtual machine, but never install. However to say no one uses it is a load of crap .
