Hey thanks for the vid, I finally got to Exalibur II with just a few minutes to spare. Your videos helped alot though I still think think challenge is a bunch of BS considering that it was supposed to take place with a playstation. I am using a playstation 1 and skipped a bunch of stuff you included and only made the Ex II by 5 minutes. Thx though, your vids helped alot! You rock!

The Perfect Items thing made me pull most of my hair out. I got a haircut after finishing this so my hair looked somewhat decent :P I couldnt seem to get enough Money to buy that stuff.
The game cant really be "perfect" because you're either missing out on the Excalibur II or you're missing out on Eiko's stat points you get from leveling up Marcus. While having all items including Excalibur II is an impressive feat, I dont consider it more perfect than Eiko having perfect stats. Excalibur wont consistently cause 9999 damage without MP attack anyway, and with maxed stats, an MP attack for a maxed out Steiner is more expensive than shock, which will unconditionally do max damage.
You know, I dont use codes or cheats, but I think EXII is the ONE exception to use codes on just so you can have a perfect game and still enjoy the story.

Just a random thought, it seems to me that the FF games that were set in a more "swords&sorcery" setting were more epic than the ones where technology is prevailant,I hope this isnt the case in FF14!
I think it boils down to common sense, I mean in the more modern or sci fi settings there's always the question of, why aren't they all using guns? I say giant cumbersome swords just look badass though :P
I think it boils down to a question... does it really matter the setting since FFVI and VII proves that theory wrong... or is Square Enix just nowhere near as creative as Squaresoft was?
FF12 being SquareEnix's first real outing in the series, I don't count FF11 since it's an mmo says it all, 12 was just. . . urgh but if you look at FF13 at first I thought, finally something new in such a long time but I can clearly see resemblences taken from past final fantasies.
Not only that. FFXII was a shameless use of past games. If you take quite a close look at FFXII, they only used things that Soft had already used, nothing was new. At ALL. Even the characters had almost no personality at all, and the storyline resembles that of FFIX to an extent.
FFXIII showed big promise, but I've seen the Demo, and it doesn't seem to be half of what they promised. And XIV is just another MMO.
It's kinda sad to think that the good FF games have ended. 7 being my favourite I've always liked the compilations but I can see that alotta fans have spread two layers of overkill. It's my favourite and I just find it annoying how people say they hate or won't play the game because of fanboyism. But I'm like that towards the PS3. The FF7 saga ends in 2020 and I can see perhaps a remake with added story to it and a final game based around Genesis and the LOVELESS prophecy. I hope it ain't ruined
I agree that some people do not comprehend how Enix ruined the storyline. I, myself, can at least enjoy the games from the saga, well... except for the stupid idea of putting one of them on cellphone. Otherwise, even I can say Crisis Core, for instance, was a really well made game. They took their ideals back to when Final Fantasy was supposed to be emotional, and thus making it one of the best portable games I've ever played, if not the best. But even you must realise there are plot mistakes.

Exactly. The plot was beautiful, and maybe even asked for a prequel at multiple times, but that doesn't mean they could take FFVII and use it like an oil well.

steiner can do 9999 easy with excalibur or ragnarok with one of his skills so....i guess someone had to show us this, lets end that with this, FFIX is far too great to just ignore it for 12 hours.
I don't think this challenge was made just to get a weapon that deals 9.999 damage easily. I also don't think that you "ignore" the game doing this, because you have to know much about the game mechanics like boss encounters, random battles, forced battles etc. to be successful.
Besides, whats the point in playing video games in the first place? Right, to have fun with it :-)
well by ignoring i meant the story itself, and for me the story is about 60% about what makes a FF game great[don't forget the music.], and if completing the challenge of getting the sword is fun for you, that's fine, but the real fun is reading and doing everything in the game, that's about it.

Don't listen to them. Stiltzkin has nothing to do with the Excalibur II. It's a reference to FF5. "Brother Gil" is Gilgamesh, and Enkido is a mispelling of Enkidu. In FF5, they were battle-buddies. Gilgamesh was searching for the Excalibur, but he ended up finding a fake called the Excalipoor.
I believe ozma can be beaten after this point, hence its not in the vid. I think its best to think of this video as the makings of a perfect save, since its not actually finished. Its about getting excalibur II first.
i see the point. i forgot that chocobo sky garden can still be accessed. but that would mean he had (already) gotta pick some other non-ozma fighting character to absorb all the exp in disc 3 at the 3 compulsory boss fights (i heard all virus status gets removed?! and someone will be forced to levelup.) in terra, if he wanna fight ozma with a full lvl 1 party... but this perfect save is NICE ^^
You know, I might try a perfect game once I get a nice, flat PS2 (my current one resents PS1 games for some reason). However, I would play two different games simultaneously: The E2 quickie game and the casual play. I'd start with the casual play and get everything else. My E2 game will involve only the goal of obtaining Excalibur II. I'd play these two games simultaneously with my casual play first. Why? First off, it's to enjoy the game. Second, it's to become more familiar with the...
...environment during my quickie. Odds are, I'll still watch all the FMV's but as long as I hold only the equipment, items and abilities necessary to make the game easier and quicker, I reckon I'll be okay.
PS: I have the U.S version of the game; odds are, I won't have to worry about not being able to make it unless I screw up bad.
eh 1whoistornapart, you would have used Kaiser Knuckles (yo ucan buy them or steal from silver dragon at the end of disk 3) they are useful for every battle except Tiamat that he absorbs Wind elem
most monsters from Memoria and Crystal World and the rest of the game are weak against wind

If your fight with Deathbringer goes as smooth as 1whoistornapart's, you're fine. This one lasted around 3 minutes, so you should be able to get Ex. 2.
My god...that is amazing. Not only did this guy play the perfect game of FFIX; he also recorded himself doing it for an internet audience, which can only add to the pressure of doing it. The achievement cannot be overstated. I applaud it in wonder and have no desire to try it myself. I'll stick to my perfect file of Dragon Quest VIII.
so...you have to get through all four discs within 12 hours to get it? Why not just get it the other way? D: Plus you'd be able to get the other character's best weapon's and level them up more
Uber congratz!!! I had an almost perfect game file but I fucked up doing a pause at the beginning of the perfect run with just stealing till I got mage basher. Set me off by 1 min. Didn't think it would be a big deal. I fell short and no matter how fast my reflexes get im always 2 seconds off from EXII. I actually through away FF9 cause I was so fucking pissed off. I spent my whole spring break and all that work for nothing. I'll probably download an EMU and try it again, pray it dont hap again.
As long as everybody (except for Steiner and Freya) is at level 1, both Eiko and Amarant will join your party at level 1. The reason why Zidane is at level 22 is because he's been absorbing all the EXP from forced battles (such as Tantarian).
By keeping them at level 1, they start out with base stats. This can be good for either a) a Base stats perfect game, or a b) max stats perfect game (you choose what equipment will give him what stat bonuses throughout the leveling up procedure). Also, Blank is figured into what level Amarant joins at (forgot about him).
And just for the fun of it, playing a level 1 game is extremely entertaining, especially if you try to fight Ozma.
in about the past two weeks i've watched all 130 of these videos. okay i skipped about 5 and skipped through the last couple cause i really wanted to get through to the last one. right now i'm working on a ffxii perfect file, then i'm gonna finish my ffx perfect file (started it like last year and never finished it xD) and after that i'm gonna do this. your videos are gonna be a big help. thanks for making them. :)
I am going to attemp this challenge once i get the NTSC version of the game. I can't remember when you defeat deathguise does it take you straight to battle kuja or do you have a chance to go back? Sorry if this seems stupid i couldn't see my self because i deleted all my saves so i can do this challenge. I wanted to know because in Atomos guide it said you have to steal a Duel Claws of him.
I finally got my EX2 today after 6 weeks and countless resets and restarts. It is possible to get most things on PAL, but unfortunatley i had to speed things up by letting my levels rise above 1. Thank you for the vids there were a great help :)
I need to take a breather from really insane challenges for a while, but I will probably do something crazy like this again in the future... just don't know exactly what :P
do you think that Square had this perfect game stuff in mind when making it? like it seems like they made certain things perfect so you could (with several tries) nail it but only in one VERY specific way
Yeah, it does seem that they designed it with the perfect game in mind. Of course when they released it in the PAL region they screwed up horribly with the timer, making a perfect game with Excalibur II impossible.
WTF? How much time does that Missable item shopping and stealing take, if you count ALL of them? It it's under 3hrs, E2PG (Except Moogle letters) would be possible theorically. Best speedrun time on PAL is 8:52, so theorically it would be possible.
Excalibur II and Items is possible, I'm now going to try. But I think I'm staying with NTSC, where this is possible ;) Luckily I got NTSC and PAL PS1 and a PAL ps2 :D

one thing: Now you were successful, but you never need the Ex 2, since you could defeat EVERY boss with your low lvl team (as you showed us in your Perfect Game). What i want to say is: U proved your skills + that its possible, but all in all you dont have much use of Ex 2 =)
Yeah, but the point is to have a perfect file which INCLUDES the Excalibur II, not so much the Excalibur II itself. It's nice to have, but it's more a matter of pride than usefulness in combat.

Actually, I never really used pause except for during FMV skips (where it saves a few seconds of load time) and to calculate Shell Dragon's HP (because Garnet needs to deliver the killing blow with Zidane dead). Most of these segments were carefully planned and practiced, so there wasn't much need to think on the fly. This video is actually the only exception to that, as I did it in one try and improvised the whole thing!
but the idea of a perfect game is to have 2 of every item left over ect. or if only one is possible, one of every item. so without the ExII a PERFECT game wouldnt be possible :p VERY nice job by the way, i simply would not have the patients to do this. no way. hats off to you man
He was saying that Falkirion can still get the EX. II but since he has the PAL version there isn't enough time to do all the perfect stuff since it runs slower. Although we are working on a "mostly perfect" PAL version. If you don't care about max stats, it should still be possible to get the Athlete Queen, perfect # of equips ect.
Well, PAL runs in 50 fps, whereas NTSC is 60 fps. While the casual gamer won't notice much difference, the PAL version is always going 16.67% slower. But the timer runs at exactly the same speed in both versions, so essentially you only have 10 hours to get the Excalibur instead of 12.
Congratulations. Are you still planning on getting 99 Protect Rings, 9999 Frogs, etc? I'd ask about the jump rope game, but I know you did 3000, so I think I already know the answer.
Max jumps is over 100,000, no idea about frogs but it's probably over 10,000. I'm just going to pretend that 999 or 9999 is the max, since no one has EVER been able to actually reach the max AFAIK, even with savestats.

Also, if you use Excalibur II, you need to equip Steiner with the rebirth ring, where he could otherwise use more useful accessories.

I believe ozma can be beaten after this point, hence its not in the vid. I think its best to think of this video as the makings of a perfect save, since its not actually finished. Its about getting excalibur II first.

i see the point. i forgot that chocobo sky garden can still be accessed. but that would mean he had (already) gotta pick some other non-ozma fighting character to absorb all the exp in disc 3 at the 3 compulsory boss fights (i heard all virus status gets removed?! and someone will be forced to levelup.) in terra, if he wanna fight ozma with a full lvl 1 party... but this perfect save is NICE ^^

You know, I might try a perfect game once I get a nice, flat PS2 (my current one resents PS1 games for some reason). However, I would play two different games simultaneously: The E2 quickie game and the casual play. I'd start with the casual play and get everything else. Lets say that you would have done a normal speedrun on this save, what would your time be once you got the Excalibur 2?
About 9h?
What I am trying to say is, how much extra time does it cost to pick up all chests, kill Tantarian, stay on Lv.1 etc.

That's a good question. I honestly couldn't say for sure, as those things affect the time on both obvious and subtle levels.
As an educated guess I'd say closer to 8h than 9. But remember that Essentia's time includes the FMVs whereas mine doesn't ;)

If your fight with Deathbringer goes as smooth as 1whoistornapart's, you're fine. This one lasted around 3 minutes, so you should be able to get Ex. 2.

My god...that is amazing. Not only did this guy play the perfect game of FFIX; he also recorded himself doing it for an internet audience, which can only add to the pressure of doing it. The achievement cannot be overstated. I applaud it in wonder and have no desire to try it myself. I'll stick to my perfect file of Dragon Quest VIII.

Uber congratz!!! I had an almost perfect game file but I fucked up doing a pause at the beginning of the perfect run with just stealing till I got mage basher. Set me off by 1 min. Didn't think it would be a big deal. I fell short and no matter how fast my reflexes get im always 2 seconds off from EXII. I actually through away FF9 cause I was so fucking pissed off. I spent my whole spring break and all that work for nothing. I'll probably download an EMU and try it again, pray it dont hap again.

I got the Hunter Rank S when I had all Stellazios, all Chocobo treasures/cracks/bubbles. You dont need every key item at all.

As long as everybody (except for Steiner and Freya) is at level 1, both Eiko and Amarant will join your party at level 1. The reason why Zidane is at level 22 is because he's been absorbing all the EXP from forced battles (such as Tantarian).

By keeping them at level 1, they start out with base stats. This can be good for either a) a Base stats perfect game, or a b) max stats perfect game (you choose what equipment will give him what stat bonuses throughout the leveling up procedure). Also, Blank is figured into what level Amarant joins at (forgot about him).
And just for the fun of it, playing a level 1 game is extremely entertaining, especially if you try to fight Ozma.

I am going to attemp this challenge once i get the NTSC version of the game. I can't remember when you defeat deathguise does it take you straight to battle kuja or do you have a chance to go back? Sorry if this seems stupid i couldn't see my self because i deleted all my saves so i can do this challenge. I wanted to know because in Atomos guide it said you have to steal a Duel Claws of him.

I finally got my EX2 today after 6 weeks and countless resets and restarts. It is possible to get most things on PAL, but unfortunatley i had to speed things up by letting my levels rise above 1. Thank you for the vids there were a great help :)

Yeah, it does seem that they designed it with the perfect game in mind. Of course when they released it in the PAL region they screwed up horribly with the timer, making a perfect game with Excalibur II impossible.

WTF? How much time does that Missable item shopping and stealing take, if you count ALL of them? It it's under 3hrs, E2PG (Except Moogle letters) would be possible theorically. Best speedrun time on PAL is 8:52, so theorically it would be possible.

one thing: Now you were successful, but you never need the Ex 2, since you could defeat EVERY boss with your low lvl team (as you showed us in your Perfect Game). What i want to say is: U proved your skills + that its possible, but all in all you dont have much use of Ex 2 =)

Yeah, but the point is to have a perfect file which INCLUDES the Excalibur II, not so much the Excalibur II itself. It's nice to have, but it's more a matter of pride than usefulness in combat.

Actually, I never really used pause except for during FMV skips (where it saves a few seconds of load time) and to calculate Shell Dragon's HP (because Garnet needs to deliver the killing blow with Zidane dead). Most of these segments were carefully planned and practiced, so there wasn't much need to think on the fly. This video is actually the only exception to that, as I did it in one try and improvised the whole thing!

He was saying that Falkirion can still get the EX. II but since he has the PAL version there isn't enough time to do all the perfect stuff since it runs slower. Although we are working on a "mostly perfect" PAL version. If you don't care about max stats, it should still be possible to get the Athlete Queen, perfect # of equips ect.

Well, PAL runs in 50 fps, whereas NTSC is 60 fps. While the casual gamer won't notice much difference, the PAL version is always going 16.67% slower. But the timer runs at exactly the same speed in both versions, so essentially you only have 10 hours to get the Excalibur instead of 12.

Never heard of that before. I doubt it will work since the software itself is encoded to run at 50 fps.

I've got E2 on PAL, but no anything else is perfect. Characters (Steiner, Zidane, Freya, Amarant) are:
Steiner: 19
Zidane: 32
Freya: 9
Amarant: 3 ^^
It's easy, just do it doublle fast as in NTSC version and It's possible to reach Lich under 12 hours with PAL.

Max jumps is over 100,000, no idea about frogs but it's probably over 10,000. I'm just going to pretend that 999 or 9999 is the max, since no one has EVER been able to actually reach the max AFAIK, even with savestats.
