Is the A310 a shortened version of the A300? And does it have more / less range than the A300?

Yes it is, it's a for longer ranges.

The A300B2 & B4 are for short and medium haul routes and do not have the range of the A310 but the the A300-600 can compete against the A310 in range.

I also believe the A310-200 has a much shorter range compared to the A310-300 & A300-600

yep the a310-200 had a 5700km range max payload full passengers compared to 8100km for the a310-300

and also compared to 6870km for the a300 i know thi because i fly a310s and 767 also i beleve the a310 is a much nicer plane slightly wider and it may be older but the avionics are virtaully the same if not better thats the differnce betweaan boeing and airbus planes

Well maybe its true they copied Boeing, but they still succeeded in selling 55 airplane in 1 day, and for the November 2008 airbus delivered 46 airplanes while Boeing only did 4 airplanes. Also Boeing lost to air refuel plane contract to Airbus, reason it was cheaper when it came to fuel consumption.
