Let's say he's just being racially insensitive/ignorant. Here's the thing. Would he use the term so loosely around a group of Japanese? If I use tha word 'Homo' around friends, is the use of tha word any less offensive if there R no gays within earshot? How about Kike, Nigger or Wop? Would I reference those names around the groups with whom they R associated... intent notwithstanding? Doubtful. The real (?) is what measure do we use to judge the character of elected officials? Sumtimes I wonder.
I don't think it is that big of deal. I don't really believe that he had racist intent. Ignorant, yes. Insensitive, yes, but not indicative of racism.
I dislike racial slurs. The thing I dislike most is that any word can be a racial slur if used in the right context. Any word that has a good meaning can become a slur if you use it sarcastically. I do understand that "Jap" was used a long time ago in a negative context, but in the context he used "Jap" here he also included "German". In context he said, "supporting Japanese and German cars" (using Jap to shorten the word Japanese). I can't say I find what he said very offensive.

@MRrhythmsNflows would you use the word Brit around a bunch of brits?

It's all about the context. For example, If i were to say, "I really love those Japs." then I think we can all agree that's perfectly fine.

Jap is an acceptable abbreviation of Japan. It is not necessarily derogative.
Find something substantial to criticize.

@nemirn Actually it is a racist term. It also depends on the context. Abbreviation in writing is acceptable. Abbreviation in speech? Not so much.

Plenty of people were offended. See the link that I added to the story from the American Asian Journalists Association about racial slurs.
