Excellent film and excellent original score (Klaus Doldinger). Too bad all these previews seem to pipe in some other bullshit dramatic music and distract you with inane overwrought narration rather than letting this masterpiece of sight and sound speak for itself.
Originally shown as a mini series on BBC2 years ago but so good it was released as a movie. The english dubbed version is spot on. You have to look really hard to spot the timing.
Cheers. Back in the eighties foreign language films were less acceptable to the british tv viewing public at the time (according to BBC executives). I guess that's why the Beeb aired it as a series rather than the film. Personally I like foreign language movies since they're often a lot better than some of the films that have come out of Hollywood.
@TK42138 The thing about the bbc version was that they actually wrote their own subtitles directly translated from the german version. The americans however just used the subtitles from the english dubbing which is mediocre at best... (example where they leave the harbour where gröhnemeyer asks the captain why he shouldnt take any pictures of leaving uboats but only of uboats coming back he responds in the german dub: "coz then those pictures actually mean something" (since 75% of uboats
never made it back anyways). In the english dub however he says "coz then the crew will have beards!" which obviously isn't a very good dub, americanized at best... Which basically makes the old bbc version the best english version of das boot. I got the 5h tv cut + directors cut here on dvd and if u use english subtitles it will just use english dubbing rather than the direct translation which sucks big time if you cant speak german and actually want to watch a quality movie....
First half of the trailers looks like standard action movie, then it slaps you with epicness, and the ending is editing mastery: cant wait to rewatch the movie.
There must be other trailers with comments, I guess.
I agree, this is a cult movie. It was one of my first bought DVD. Luckily, it was the Director´s Cut. It must be the first title that I did put on my wish-list...

A great movie. The style of this movie has been recently copied by the director of the BBC2 drama "The Sinking of the Laconia"
