You didn't really answer the guys question about the sunrise. Using my noggin', I'd suggest that if you get a lens flare when the sun crests, therein lies your problem. If your ND filter makes the pre-cresting phase too dark, and you can't afford / be arsed getting special lenses and crap, here's an idea.

Film a sunset, even use your cameras ND filter if you must. Then reverse the footage. It makes timing the ND toggle easier, and let's face it, we don't want to be up that early anyway.

pec pads and eclipse are one of the best optic cleaners I know of. The Eclipse liquid is okay for dslr sensors too, and pec pads are not recommended for that, but are pretty much the same as cleaning component of the recommended stick for sensor cleaning. I've used a linear polarizer on my DSLR and it worked fine, so I wonder if it would work for the Sanyo HD1000 that I ordered in(with a 40.5m adapter of course). A linear is cheaper than a cpol and adjustable, thus more effective imho.
